I think I've decided I'm rolling a warrior. My only concern is faction. In anniversary, I initially rolled ally, but for some reason it felt like alliance players were much gayer and worse at pvp and just generally faggier than Horde, so I swapped back to horde. But in forever, the racials on alliance seem absolutely busted, and we know that alliance zones are just way better than horde ones for leveling. I'm a bit conflicted on which to pick.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen had this cool idea for horizontal progression where some zones and areas would have extreme weather conditions that apply negative effects, like cold slows you and damages you, windy pushes you around, etc. You'd have to "acclimate" to them by equipping infusions which are sort of like a second set of equipment but there were other ways like gear, buffs, etc. planned for how to mitigate climates. So it was sort of like a soft, incremental attunement mechanic, they showed off a mockup of a raid boss who was like a wind demon or something that would push and knock the raid off platforms if they weren't properly positioned or acclimated and one of the raids was in a cold zone called Amberfaet.Obviously Pantheon is a scam and Visionary Realms is a disaster but the IDEA was cool and an example of some horizontal progression I would actually like to see.

I was wondering why I seemed to stop enjoying wow, and it’s actually because after wotlk, they stopped producing Warcraft. They started making themepark mmorpgs. Forever is another themepark without the main game, there’s no meat and potatoes you’ll be eating tons of different appetizers and wondering why you aren’t feeling good anymore. They must’ve fired most of the staff or they died or something because it’s actually like they lost touch with their roots and started making an entirely new genre. Xiv also makes this genre. Leveling 1-60 was the main game. Thats wow classic. Some people might say raiding or pvp was significant, but that was actually just minigame stuff that was added onto the game because you could. It’s definitely confusing if you’ve never had a rank 1 arena team or you’ve never done endgame raiding at a high level, it’s actually nothing special. Thats more like putting a cd into your PlayStation and jumping into a game of fifa. That’s not MMORPGs. Classic actually knew it already, they were 100% aware that raiding was NOT mmorpg content. Which was the point of world buffs and consumables, designed that way to draw you mentally into a more mmorpg friendly environment. One of the side effects of this, of the “ultimate goal” actually being an insignificant desire, was confusion and panic. And this actually ended up improving the feeling of leveling, because leveling by itself might seem like it’s not very interesting. But trust me that’s the main part of mmorpgs that people enjoy. They’ve just been unable to produce another good leveling experience, part of it has to do with gear carrying over from past expansions, but the content is designed to not have OP gear. So it’s just a pointless experience without much content. Dungeon finder actually ISNT fun, you might disagree you might think you HAVE to be playing with other people in a dungeon instantly whenever your heart desires. You could already do that, it just took a bit of extra planning. What dungeon finder did was it destroyed the feeling of the world being a significant thing. If we actually break down like every element of every leveling zone, you’d see a lot of theory went into designing balance. It all flows very well, but what classic devs were doing around that era was actually called LYING TO THE PLAYER. The concept of this went away after wotlk. They stopped lying to people. As it turns out, that’s fucking retarded but it works when you don’t know about it.

A common critique of classic is limited bag space. It’s actually balanced specifically around that element lol they literally did that on purpose. If you play correctly, if you actually try to write your own speedruns and try to beat the world record, you’ll definitely notice they designed the monsters loot specifically around NOT picking up everything. Look it’s stupid, but it works. It makes the game feel more or something. Like there’s more game there than what was offered, not less. And you barely lose any gold when doing your route correctly, it was a mechanic designed firstly to punish people who were just “doing their own thing”. Punishment is a mechanic we don’t see often in games anymore. In retail, the only punishment you’ll ever experience is the wowhead boss where you need to go through hundreds of wowhead pages to complete their achievements. Achievements were alright I guess, that was a somewhat interesting addition to the main game. Altho achievements at its core are just more quests. The game already had tons of quests, the quests could be as retarded as they wanted because they weren’t actually anything just an achievement point. I think the genre of achievements evolved over time into what’s called challenge modes. So these are achievements which were much more time consuming. Like for example tying flying mounts to an achievement was retarded, that was literally a QUEST and should’ve been done by an NPC with an exclamation mark above its head. Achievements being used to prove you cleared content wasn’t really necessary, as your ilvl was the proof already. Im still not totally sure about achievements and im hesitant to just call them trash like most people probably do, there’s definitely potential for a game with pointless achievements and challenge modes.

You sit there and spam frostbolt for an hour in a big group of other people spamming their own one or two button rotations and then get a blue/purple drop if you're lucky. That's it.
