I mentioned it before but just feel like repeating, the mechanic in Banner Saga where characters' strength is tied to how full they are in health, was really cool and well done and led to more variety in how to approach things than in most games where a 1hp enemy is just as effective as someone at full heatlh, so your priority should always be focusing on taking out one enemy at a time instead of chipping away at a number of enemies.You can of course still opt to gang up on one enemy to take them out and that can be the best approach, but you aren't forced into that when chipping away at their health also reduces their effectiveness.Really enjoyable games overall, great world and art and general feeling.

The camp interactions between the party members in zero company are really good, particularly Trick and Luco. It's not a coincidence they're the best written in general as well. Hopefully more crpg in the future take this more involved approach of party member interactions, rather than like in bg3 where they couldn't give less of a fuck about each other at the end of the day even if they have a few lines saying otherwise.And of course, as with all things, it helps a lot that there are mechanical consequences for these relationships. Much like in Fire Emblem or Persona, each character has a bond rating with each other character, and these are affected by both combat actions and dialogue choices. Having mechanical reactivity to social elements is something more crpg should take advantage of. bg3 dabbled in it with the statue, and kotor1/2 do come to mind as games where alignment had mechanical malus/bonus and you could affect the alignments of your companions, but it's a real shame that the genre that is supposed to be about social interactions and gathering a party together is being shown up by tactical turn based rpg-lites like Fire Emblem and Zero Company in this regard. Every crpg should have all party members have good or bad relationships with each other, these should be determined by both social interactions and actions in combat, and they should always have mechanical reactivity.Pillars was ok with this, that had some interactions with the party. And Mass Effect touched on it a bit with Jack and Miranda. Dragon Age is famous in part for it's party member interactions, but it's mostly just banter. It's good, but it's just flavor. I think games that gives you bonus and malus for relationships is another nice step above just flavor interactions. I would also like a system where you can't max everyone, some are mutually exclusive, which adds another layer of choice...and consequence. The essence of a good crpg.

I swear the final parts of Rogue Trader are so unfinished. I just had Ravor inform me of Ulfars descent to the planet alone, despite the fact that Marazhai just gutted Ravor and left him a bloody corpse on the deck right after we entered the system. I suppose so few people take Marazhai with them, and even fewer complete his romance AND choose to kill Ravor over the other two options that Owlcat never bothered to fix it. Still bad form, though.

There's one fight where one of the enemies actually beelines for any downed ally and executes them on their next turn, which in beskar mode deletes the entire save. That was a nail biter. But we managed to save them since we had a medic.Hopefully future crpg developers pick up a few things here, like the party relationship system and the mechanical reflections of it.
