While mind controlled, Minthara sensed you were not controlled by the absolute and that you were blocking her connection to the absolute (she's right, when you have sex she is in immediate proximity to the artifact, but she doesn't know it was the artifact doing it) and so decides to kill you because you are a threat to the absolute. This is not a choice to betray you, this is while she is mind controlled.That same night, when her connection to the absolute is restored because she leaves your immediate proximity when she returns to camp from the sex room, she has a vision from the absolute that tells her to decide your fate, and she decides to let you live when she gets to make the decision. This scene only leads to a fight if you choose the option that reveals you don't follow the absolute or she suspects you're lying. Genderswapped Shadowheart was so insanely pathetic it's crazy. Cowardly, annoying, and immensely faggy. Sure, you might say "Astarion is like that too", but male Shadowheart was a hundred times worse than Astarion. Her character flat out does not work as a man. She's basically written like a teenage girl. It kinda made all the cringe lines stand out too. Male Shadowheart would probably end up killed by 80% of the playerbase. Male Lae'zel was gross and would be killed by 99% of players. Male Karlach was actually cool for the most part. She's the only female character that worked as a man. Male Minthara didn't really work because she talks too much about female supremacy.

Here's another - the Nightsong was a Sharran boss fight until it was decided she wouldn't be. I don't know when it was decided Minthara would be a companion, but it had to have been before December 2022 and the patch that implemented Paladins. Regardless, I disagree with the underlying claim that Minthara's class is only a last-minute swap or nominal. Lolth would not continue to favor a disgraced Baenre, and even if she did, a cleric of Lolth would have been a rather flat companion. Moreover, class follows from characterization, not the other way around. You could easily imagine Astarion as a Rogue-adjacent class, but Astarion wasn't written because the game needed a (useless) Rogue companion. Similarly, the characterization of Minthara - a drow exile, apostate, and someone determined to seek revenge against Orin - naturally pushes her toward being a paladin. Defeating the Absolute and then undertaking a campaign against Menzoberranzan itself is a tale worth singing. Going back to being a Spider Queen sycophant, not so much.
