Each tier of ATK goes up by approximately 8%, DEF by 10%, HP by 18%, Crit/C-Res by 4%. Tier5 ATK gear is 43% better than tier1, while tier5 HP is 89% better, and with gear being the biggest influence on a unit's stats (75% at rank9 by my calculations) it's pretty much the main reason for all stat discrepancies. For example, Snorky has one of the better stat spread with 4 Atk/HP/Def, 3 C-Res, 5 Crit, while Tig is the same but with 3 Def instead. Literally the only unit with tier1 Physical Atk is Rohne, meanwhile you have multiple Rings/Hand Mirrors/Bracelets because the vast majority of units have either tier5 or tier3 Crit.

The stat gains are next to nothing, it's really dumb. They're better saved as cheap rerolls than bought for stats. Also if you can, don't spend in the first few waves so you get interest. Whetstone is top tier, but otherwise typically an HP boosting artifact is much better than DEF boosting ones. If you didn't already, you can turn off some of the worst items from showing up in your card management screen. Every new one you unlock lets you turn another one off.
