that doesnt sound right. shouldnt the latency in ms be the same, but just the amount of frames shown during that amount of time is more?
>>
>>582888703
No, the game is still using 30 fps logic, and basic interpolation will need to wait at least 33ms because it needs to see 2 frames to interpolate one between them
It's going to feel strange because normally higher fps reduces latency
>>
>>582891431
ahh yes that makes sense, thanks
>>
>>582891431
This is incorrect. Without interpolation a button press is registered on frame 0, the game processes the logic and shows you the next frame 33.3 ms later. With interpolation the game instead shows you a halfway frame at 16.6 ms and then the expected complete frame at 33.3 ms just as before. It's not like interpolating video, though it does prevent late-polling input unless you want to get into speculative interpolation.

To be fair, the only thing this adds over emulation is frame interpolation. It still runs at 20fps. Every other thing it can do already exists is some emulators. Even performance isn't practically improved, since it still uses a really slow emulated renderer.

DLSS must increase latency because it is a performance saving measure. You can only start interpolating frames after the next frame has been generated and with DLSS the limitation is how fast the computer can render them.

Re/decomp interpolation is different since it is about improving framerate with out affecting frame based logic. In theory the computer could render the next frame and then generate the next interpreted frame in 1ms so you could run the game at 1000fps and get a best case 1ms latency. Of course the worst case would still be 33.3ms for 30fps logic.
I kind of doubt any re/decomp actually does this though. It's just a lot more complicated to do it that way. Like what do you do if you miss the window for the next interpolated frame? I'm pretty confident turning on interpolation in the monhun p3rd recomp increases latency, though in theory it could work like >>582893525 says.

Recomps interpolate using the actual gamestate before drawing. So, on a simplified level, instead of:

>poll input
>process game logic
>draw frame to buffer
>sleep until 33.3 ms elapsed
>present frame

As it normally would, the engine can:

>poll input
>process game logic
>compute interpolated frame from original and processed game states
>draw interpolated frame and real next frame to buffers
>sleep until 16.6 ms elapsed
>present interpolated frame
>sleep another 16.6 ms
>present real frame

Same idea for higher framerates, no additional latency. In practice it's usually a bit more sophisticated than this, you can look into how Doom sourceports handle the 35hz internal tic rate.

this is because the savefile would be stored on the cartridge, and different save memory chips cost different amounts of money, and the game publisher wants to keep the costs down of the game cart

i have a legit issue with it when i do custom mappings where i want some buttons to not do anything, cause padforge automatically maps them with the "correct" corresponding buttons the moment i leave the custom mappings tab. A workaround i found is binding buttons my controller doesn't have, ie "back paddle 4", but i can't find a "don't automatically map buttons" option.

It was originally a licensed game based off an anime that was never localized (AFAIK) in the west, so the game was changed accordingly. The most striking modification was in its level design. They may look similar at first glance, but some slight tweaks were made to make each level slightly less difficult.

RA is better for every system up to the dreamcast.
For PS2 onwards, use standalones.
Also it's good for DS because the DS didn't run at 60hz so standalones all have stuttering because of the mismatch between the game speed and your monitor's refresh rate. RA fixes this with Dynamic Rate Control (which no standalones have).

I mean that alone sucks. I don't know why they don't just vibe whatever protocol's necessary for analog buttons to work. I've already said it a thousand times but here, drain my life force just to deny their importance again:
>no notifications on whether any of the enhancement hints from the database are being used, and what they are; you just have to eyeball it
>for hacks not in the db you have to manually add patch files from PCSX2, figure out which game goes to what hex, and rename/edit them accordingly -- LRPS2 would greatly benefit from using something like the RA cheat system where you can enable/disable each option from a list
>no FMV ratio correction
>several missing peripherals
Meanwhile Reliquary has all this and has gotten additional audio and video latency improvements.
>muh shaders
480i system that looked like trash even in its day on a CRT. PCSX2 and PGS have their own shaders, and other shaders can be applied externally. Uprezzed 2x or more, which just looks better on most PS2 games if we're being for real, shaders have a very minimal effect anyway. That is not an excuse to throw out all that other functionality. We could have it all in one place, but Danny n company won't ever do it.

In 2d yes.
In 3d no.
If you're emulating, tvout tweaks and GTU50 shaders allow you to lower the horizontal signal bandwidth (ie, increase the blur).
This allows for blended dithering without the horrible artifacts and other nasty effects that composite does (like those weird rainbows, dot crawl, colour bleeding, shimmering on movement etc etc etc).

Most emulators have backported SSF's feature that automatically blends the dithering though so you don't have to use shaders.

They get rid of PAL versions. Which are the best ones. Because
-They are the latest version of the game rom and thus contain bug fixes and other updates missing from the other (earlier) jap/usa versions
-They have new gameplay modes and features not present in jap and usa versions
-They often have superior translations and less censorship
-You can run them at 60hz in emulators anyway

1g1r sets are complete shit.
>>
>>583410651
All of these are isolated cases and no one wants to play "Probotector". If a region specific version is better, chances are it's well known. If it isn't, no one is picking PAL first anyway lol

>>
>>583540982
Yeah, I love my Steam Deck, and have been doing Emugen for a while now. I only ask for these two because I haven't used any more modern emulators that require me messing with the Bios. And i vaguely recall the last time I was emulating PS2 on PC that it was worthwhile to massage some of the settings.
I guess mostly I wanted a sense of how well PS2 runs on the Steamdeck. Though the games I'm trying to run aren't super extreme in any case.
There's these old JRPGs I played as a kid, Evolution 1 and 2 and Okage, and I'm trying to get them running to practice my Japanese.
>>
>>583541375
I've never tested PS2 on my Deck yet, but it should handle GDsx just fine. I know it works well in a handful of Gamecube/Wii games I've thrown at it.

But if we're talking about BIOS files, SteamOS should handle those just like any other PC can. As long as you're looking through TOSEC sets, you should be good to go when it comes to rarer BIOSes.

Getting into some less common systems lately like PC98 and I have to wonder did the actual system suffer from stuttering and slow down in action games or is there some settings that need tweaking?

Playing Rusty for example its not the smoothest scrolling, but I know in older PC games in the west that wasn't uncommon either with stuff like Commander Keen pioneering tricks to mimic how the NES achieved smooth movement. Or in some games it just feels not so smooth in general like its getting hit with slow down. Not sure if that is the emulator being accurate to what it was or not accurate. Using the RA core for it because Emulation Station lazy setup.

Around this time of year I get nostalgic for Pokemon. Mainly Pokemon XY cause this was the release window for it back in 2013.
I'll mostly be playing it on my PC (I assume Citra is the best emu?) but occasionally porting the save over to a 3DS so I can play outside in the fall weather.
If there was some kind of local network cloud save function I could engage with, that would be the best... Easier than having to pop an SD card in and out and back in and out again and again.
And I hear there's "Pretendo" online replacement for 3DS titles, is it remotely active at all? I'd really like to have Wonder Trade and that kind of functionality back.

Yea and even that wasn't always used or many games were single screen. My memories from the last actual old PCs I ever saw are faded in early early life, but thought I remembered a lot of them being a little, redraw pixels line by line jank. Though didn't grow up in JP so damn sure never saw one of those in person.

Kinda funny they keep doing all these recompiles of games that upscale and run very well in emulation, but I could do for some obscure stuff thats a bitch to get working well getting that. Its like how they remake movies that were good and make them mid, why not remake ones that had good ideas but flopped and were a bit shit.
>>
>>583706905
They already do, actually.
AI is basically useless for recomps btw it’s only really useful for decomps (and even then you still need serious testing for each instructions).
Emulators already did the reverse-engineering and code translation work decades ago. The only difference between emulation and recomps is that recomps translate ahead of time, and not at runtime. 360 recomps use Xenia, PS1 recomps use some mashup of all PS1 emulator research, and SwitchRecomp is based on Ryujinx I think???
and for Xbox it's gonna be Xemu, however Xemu is fucking shit! so it'll take a while to get good Xbox 1 recomps. But people are working on it already. Actually are Conkers and Halo already out?

You want proper decomp instead of glorified emulators anyway. a recomp doesn't give you a source code that's easy to work with and modify. If your recomp doesn't x2/x4 the framerate with mouse aim I don't need it.

it's crazy that AI turned emulation into recompilation
I'll be completely honest I think emulators are going to die in 5 years, all the good old games that are stuck in dead platforms are simply going to be recompiled to pc, and that's fucking amazing
the development on the most troublesome consoles like n64 and x360 is going so insanely fast
you're going to emulate the retroarch stuff that runs anywhere, snes, mega drive and below
but ps3, 360, original xbox, ps4, all the consoles that are either hard to emulate or have shitty emulators like original xbox are just going to have their exclusives recompiled, pretty fucking cool
>>
>>583108214
Yeah but nobody anywhere has it on their local machine that can upload it on a temporary file host?
>>
So after trying the LRPS2 PGS 32x/4x setting a bit more, it's pretty fucking awesome. Very sadly King's Field IV and Shadow Tower Abyss still cap at a 448p resolve with PGS, but every other game I checked goes up to around 1792p. With an SMAA and sharpen shader most games look pretty much perfect on a 4K screen (Aside from the ones with major glitches like Xeno 3).
>>
>>583767067
But if emulate I can add filters, control a lot of the upscale and look, and easily take them with me on portable hardware. I mean maybe all that will be there in that time too, but I sort of don't see the point as N64 emulates very well and the PS3 emulator is pretty good too which covers most of the 360 that isn't already on PC. Saturn is still hardware hungry I guess and PS4 is still newish and PS5 just doesn't have much I guess so maybe there. Real question why recompile? Most emulators are great or good outside of current gen including several people think aren't because they haven't looked in years.
>>
>>583767891
you can make any .exe game portable, installers are just unpackers and recompiled games run modern renderers like vulkan so you can change graphical settings too
the recompile scenes are big for consoles that had bad emulators, those will be the first ones

You have to understand that to the ignorant, this shit is all basically arcane magic. They don't know how any of this works or where it comes from. All they know is they're afraid to use any of it unless it's safe and easy to use, a one-click solution akin to a phone app.
>>
>>583767067
Recompilations are entirely reliant on emulators so that's simply not happening. Decompilations could kill emus, yes, but no ai will even do a full decom in a prompt overnight, unless maybe there are enough decomps done on a single platform.
>>
>>583780812
It performs better. I'm seeing 120fps with perfect frametimes on the recomp, while shad seems to stutter a lot, even if GPU/CPU usages seems similar (it's still kinda shadps4 on the recomp after all)
I don't think chadps4 supports fsr upscaling too (and even the bigger cards seems to require some upscaling if you want 4K)
If I cared enough about soulslop I would try both myself and see for sure, unfortunately I don't, this is just what I'm seeing from videos.

That makes a lot more sense. I keep seeing its about games on emulators that don't run well and people keep saying things like the N64, which runs fantastic if you aren't using the same shit from a decade ago, and its games from that thing that I keep seeing. PS2 even runs great now. Last things I tried that didn't were Saturn was resource hungry for what it was but did just fine and OG Xbox wasn't as good as PS2/GCN, though often its multiplats despite higher res usually weren't the better versions anyway. 360 is a bit weak but the major titles can run and PS3 got weirdly good. I've not seen someone go digging up Vita titles to recompile, and even that emulator has made huge advances in the last few years.

Something like the source port of Doom 64 is one thing that is fitting as a Doom game to have the options the others do in the series was really nice, but just making a iso an exe with it translated to PC calls really seems like a hey don't hurt yourself running emudeck's installer. More options is better, but so why not if they have the free time to do it I guess. I do have to wonder if it really keep the same spirit there if someone likes the full experience like the past (well within reason anyway) as in the end ports almost always change things. The language used responds at a different speed, the quirks of the hardware get lost, etc. So many of the buggy Sonic games for example play buggy on PS2/GCN but did fine on the Dreamcast, Mario All Stars changes the physics, Minecraft in C++ has had broken shit for its in entire run as it just prioritizes events differently. Its neat but doesn't seem super useful to someone who already feels fine emulating.

I'm tired of dealing with the headaches of trying to get these mapped to modern controllers on a per-game basis and whatnot, so I'm looking for the best OEM style N64 and GameCube controllers that can be used wirelessly on SteamOS with hall effect or TMR sticks and triggers. I'm aware of the NSO controllers and the 8BitDo Mod Kits, but they seem to have significant shortfalls for me. The NSO N64 controllers use potentiometers instead of optical encoders like the original and the range of values output by the stick aren't as accurate as you would expect from a 1st party offering. The N64 8BitDo Mod Kit uses a TMR stick and the range of values seems to be better than the NSO offering, but it also changes the size and shape of the stick itself and can't reach the gate. The NSO GameCube controller uses potentiometers for the sticks and triggers like the original. The 8BitDo Mod Kit uses hall effect sticks, but leaves the potentiometer triggers. Are there other controllers or mods I should be considering? If there's nothing out there that checks all these boxes, what do you think the best compromise is?

Has anyone managed to compile all the ROM dumps for 88emu yet?

You must be brown or hella retarded

The N64 one i can sort of understand what you are getting at, theres more facebuttons than on modern controllers. theres solutions but they arent ideal
The gamecube controller can basically be mapped 1:1, idk what you are even talking about

ok the notches are missing for the joystick, but thats the only real issue

While not as big of a deal as with the N64, you'll usually end up with a button mapping that feels good for navigating menus but weird for actual game play, or vice-versa. There's also the tactile feel of bottoming out the triggers on the OEM GameCube controller, though I doubt it's a deal breaker for many people.

I thought I’d give the NG2 recomp a try, figuring at least it wouldn’t make my 7800X3D catch fire like on Xenia. But this shit is basically the same as Xenia Edge, same bugs, same 60 fps cap, same CPU and GPU usage. The only upside is ultrawide support, which is nice, but come on.
Maybe it even runs worse than Xenia, had no issue getting 4K on it, but not here? Also the app's window not capping to the game's fps is trash.

A recomp from 360 should run on a fucking potato (i5-4460/GTX 750Ti) at 1080p@60. No excuses.

thats how you know its just an emulator
>>
so besides people throwing AI around, the big front ends are still launchbox, emulationstation/retrobat and playnite on PC, aren't they

Correct, though I find ES-DE only has limited use cases on the Deck's Game Mode IMO.

just play games, dont waste time with frontends, its time spend not playing games, like a performative gamer

NESticle can finally be used on both modern Winblows and Loonix. There's also netplay support, so it's technically possible to play with other people on different platforms. (Including the original Win95 NESticle, though it hasn't been tested yet.)

>all the good old games that are stuck in dead platforms are simply going to be recompiled to pc
The truly good ones won't, because people have shit taste.
This is going to be a disaster.

1CC'd that a year or 2 back.
Outstanding game.

Protip: The follow up is SonSon 2 on the PC Engine. Made by the same director and has identical gameplay, but just in a different setting and theme.

>Doesn't it have all the issues the emulated version has?
That can't be possible. The ps4 version is fucking riddled with technical issues.

Now all we need is for Unity to work on Win9x and we're golden. It'd make playing Baldi's Basics more "period accurate."
