There are zero tangible benefits to having the "Classic" brand be its own game series. It's literally a subsection of the franchise that hinges on nostalgia and larping as if it were the 90s or something (even though it barely resembles the actual 90s Sonic games). Now all 2D games have to take place before Sonic Adventure in the "canon" so any character made after 1997 isn't allowed to appear in a 2D game. A character like Cream, who literally originated in a 2D game now can't appear in them because? She doesn't have black eyes or something? Then they go even further and have begun creating NEW "classic" characters (Trip), and those aren't allowed to appear in any other games where Sonic has green eyes. Even the music in Superstars had to be that awful "retro" immitation because of this. That game flopping is just proof there isn't much interest in that type of brand anymore. Okay, so I started reading IDW yesterday and I'm up through the end of the Metal Virus arc. For those keeping score, that's a third of the entire run and allegedly the best arc that IDW has to offer. And yet... it's nothing. I feel like it was just... wasted. Completely. The characters weren't in-character. Once they "killed" one off, there was no hesitation doing it again, and again, and again. It became meaningless, expected even, to lose another character. The heroes? Useless. The villains? Somehow also useless, especially the Zeti. The worst part is that there were brief flashes of good writing in there. Moments where I cared if something happened, if only for a page or a panel. But nothing stuck. Anything good was quickly forgotten and every development felt contrived. I dunno, maybe I'll have more thoughts later.Also I've been unable to stop myself from stopping reading every time I see one of those fuck-ass lyrics dialogue panels. They take me out of the story so fucking fast. Absolutely awful.I genuinely can't see what anyone sees in this comic. I'm going to keep reading, because I'm a glutton for punishment, but if THAT'S the best there is? It's going to be rough getting through the other two thirds. Some of the cover art is nice, though.
