Chapter 2 had people saying that the goal of the weird route was to make Noelle strong enough to break the game itself so we could find Dess who was trapped in the code. And then Dess was revealed to be the main antagonist, the weird route goes Against whatever plans she has by just removing Kris from hometown, and it skips like 80% of the Dess related scenes.

Compare DR to any other RPG (or game with RPG mechanics) you can think of, Skyrim/Dragon Age/Final Fantasy/Slay the Spire/Hades/SMT/etc. In them you have multiple ways to prepare before an encounter, different deck strategies to lean on, items, a wide variety of gear that change your abilities, classes, etc. All throughout the game (early/mid/late). Meanwhile in DR that aspect of an RPG is in the fucking trenches, mechanically the party members are nearly unchanged from 1 to 5 in terms of depth with no variation to that depth. Even if this makes sense for the narrative, it just means that every encounter is only experienced one major way, when you learn how to dodge Tenna, that's it. There's no way to really shake it up (even removing equipment doesn't change that much, just the allowance of mistakes than what you're actually doing in the fight). Compare this with SMT where what demons I want to progress with drastically changes how the early/mid/late game shakes out, how I prepare my protag can change what demon I want to use. One's view on consumables can let them greed out more when it comes to the longevity of allies. All these little levers are things DR doesn't let you change anywhere near to the degree the others can. This does make encounters linear in some level since even if the bullet-hell part is fun, what you do between that is the same (and this can wear on you if you're playing the game 1-4 times).
