I think Tails and Amy should go in the vault. Neither have done anything compelling since Sa2. They're only here because they're Amy and Tails. Whenever their fans explain it, they just appeal to how iconic they are. "Amy is supposed to chase Sonic, Tails is supposed to follow Sonic". I don't care. Can they be good characters? Everything they did after 2001 is bad. It's okay to let them be side characters or leave them out and focus on new characters.

Sonic is shonen. That means it obligatorily has the main character doing almost everything and being wanked by everyone about how cool he is. He has a rival who gets to do some cool stuff too. Besides that, there's a myriad of secondary characters who get one or two cool moments in the entire run then become useless jobbers. Then there's the weak and useless friends who love the MC and are his personal cheerleading squad. And all the women are weak and suck and never do anything.

Look at how Amy and Tails dags say that they need to be in the story just because they're iconic and important. What makes them important? In literally every game after sa2 they are garbage and accomplish nothing. They don't tell you anything about Sonic that matters and at best they say something cute. The argument to the first cannot be changed on a whim, but for the last one, what I saw is: one should create scenarios where support abilities are critical to the group. For example, Tails did some important research in Forces to get them to fight in Eggman's moon base, which Sonic compliments him for that, but nobody cares, maybe because it doesn't make up for his embarrassing display in the game for the fans. His role in Colors is cool in your book, but perhaps the story is too low stakes for it to seem like a feat? Something like that.
