Amy is pure of heart and super sweet and compassionate. Tails is very gentle, and kind, and innocent but also a bit more rational and observant. Cream combines both of these traits without Amy's overwhelming passion or Tails' insecurities, which makes her the "inoffensive hybrid". Cream's strict discipline of being super polite because of her mother is layered on top of that to emphasize the Tails side in-contrast to Amy, but the end result overall isn't that distinguished from eithe beecause she's too much of a midpoint between Tails and Amy despite Tails and Amy themselves being polar opposites.

Cream is the midpoint between Tails and Amy, and the main difference is simply that she doesn't revolve her whole life around Sonic, on top of lacking the more extreme aspects of Tails and Amy that drive both characters.

Tails is driven by his background of being bullied and wanting to be like Sonic, Amy is driven by her passion for Sonic and also not wanting to be a burden, but Cream doesn't have either of these even if her SC Cover Story puts her in a similar position to both.

Overall, my main criticism of Cream is that she's "lacking" something. Something that actually distinguishes her from both Amy and Tails, and balance her better alongside them without creating a situation where someone like you would try and use Cream as the better alternative to replace Tails and Amy 'cause that's exactly what you're doing.

The Daffy Duck comparison is funny because that's literally what Ian does. Sonic talks about how amazing he is and other characters roll their eyes. That used to be a Knuckles thing and Ian has Tails doing it in multiple canons.

I personally like to compare Tails to a mix of Edd "Double D" from Ed, Edd 'n Eddy and Numbuh 4 from Codename: Kids Next Door. Most of what defines who Tails is would be the latter, but most of what you SEE on the surface would be the former, and the contradiction is what drives Tails' character in general.

Cream takes the "Edd" side of Tails, removes the genius inventor trait and the timidity, leaving only "really polite", very gentle and very kind and being a literal "pacifist" who avoids violence, and being the straight man role. Then, this is combined with who Amy is behind the overwhelming passion for Sonic and hotheadedness. Amy's genuine sweetness, empathy, compassion, her pure heart, her ability to reach out to Gamma and Shadow, her selfless care and concern for Birdie, all of that is what Cream incorporates as well without any of Amy's "spicier" side "getting in the way".

So what that creates is someone who outwardly is very polite, very kind, very gentle, and is a pacifist who avoids unnecessary violence ... and on the inside is full of genuine compassion and sweetness. So inside and out she's a cute little sister whose biggest flaw is being too bluntly honest in an innocent way despite her polite discipline. But there is honestly not much that she has on her own that Tails or Amy didn't already have on their own, and she's right there at the perfect midpoint that she's a bit "too" inoffensive. If that makes sense.

Maybe it doesn't, I'm probably not making any sense, I know my way of analyzing things might not make sense to anyone, so maybe it's just me.

What I always find myself circling back to is the thought that Cream should've been like Sage. Being cold and calculatingly analytical while also being a cute little girl whose innocent and naive would be the perfect way for her to be 'Amy's Tails' without overlapping so hard with both. Neither Amy nor Tails is "cool" or "cold" at all, so Cream being "icy" would've made the most sense.

Her entire color scheme is based on a heckin QUIRKY reference to a glitch. Right from the very concept there is an issue in character design, she's based on a glitch with a randomized color scheme. Other characters are given their colors deliberately, according to what mood they want the character to give off, what their role is, what their personality and main traits are. Amy is pink because she's a girl in love. Knuckles is red to contrast with Sonic/M.E. as well as making him more striking. Shadow is black because he's a mysterious anti-hero type. Why is Surge green? So you can point and say HEY LOOK I RECOGNIZE THAT REFERENCE FROM THAT THING. She's a tenrec becaus the "Shadow is actually like a tenrec (fake hedgehog)" became a meme in 2018ish and everyone was making their OCs into tenrecs. So she's a social media headcanon meme and a reference to the fact that Sonic games are awful glitchy messes. This isn't getting into the fact that her outfit is trash. As in it looks like a ripped black trashbag. What were they going for making it? It's yellow so it's similar to her vomit colored fur, but you have no calmer colors to offset all of it, so you're left with this garish neon blob. And then all that grey. Why do IDW characters use so much grey? Her muzzle is sickly and weird looking too. Why is it greyish? Why do Americans insist on making such horrid designs like this and why does anyone defend it? Again, is it just because it has eyelashes? I hope Idw is canceled so I never have to look at this thing again. And this is just about her appearance, let's not get into the complete dogshit dumpster fire that is her story and personality. That's generally what I have in mind for an OC I have in my project that's based on this general idea, and I've had that idea before Sage even existed. But again, I don't want Cream to be retconned into being like that now, it's just a hypothetical. The only real problem with Cream as she was actually conceptualized, is the lack of balance between her Heroes and Advance 2 roles which results in an imbalance with Amy, and how that's negatively impacted both Amy and Cream in the past.

I don't share the sentiment that Cream was a mistake or should be vaulted. I like that Cream exists. But the way that she's been used at times, in ways that overshadow Amy at Amy's expense, should not have happened the way that they did.
