Fifteen years ago on IGN, this game got a high rating for being good and a return to form for Sonic. The music and the graphics here are very good, and the writing was funny.The level design was not that great though. The controls were worse than unleashed for the boost gameplay. But it was overall a solid game, with some length and content.

Sonic Colors was fine but Lost World was too far towards Mario for my taste. Something about the graphics and aesthetics felt like that to me. Sonic Colors still had a less cartoon look to it.I never played Lost World so can't comment on the gameplay.

Sonic Colors is a great game.The music and graphics are wonderfulThe Pontaff writing is awful, but the Japanese original is okayThe level design is fun. Just don't go in expecting it to play like other Sonic games. Expect NSMB. It's not all that hard but it still provides some kind of challenge. The Red Star Rings are a good addition, they're well hidden (unlike Generations or Frontiers), and the Wisps are well used sometimes, unlocking them as you progress the game is also a positive. I like having more acts per zone, I feel 3 is a good amount, but I don't mind having 3 more. 1 or 2 acts feels like the zone ends too soon. The zone themes are all great, interesting, and unique.The controls are much MUCH better than Unleashed. The only small issue is that the Wii's default control scheme has less buttons which means quickstepping and drifitng are limited to quickstepping and drifitng, the only places where you actually use them. Wait a second, that's not a problem at all.I hate the praise it got.It is not a return to form, it's an New Super Mario Bros. copy.It is not a 3D game, it's 90% 2D.It is not Unleashed "without the bad parts", the Werehog and hubs are awesome.I don't think the people who praised it ever even honestly liked it. The fact that they aren't around to love it anymore tells me they were never serious about it. I think they were backhanded compliments to insult everything the series had been up to that point. Similar things have happened with Generations and Mania too. Listening to those people in any serious capacity was a huge mistake and is still negatively affecting us to this day.

There's also unique versions of moves that can be used in the high speed state which are variations of existing moves like the Tails attack or Amy's faceplant from Advance 1 that don't slow you down, and Knuckles' downward attack can break certain floors to give him access to areas, so I think they did consider players seeking to perform well at the game when designing most of the new moves, even if probably not at the level of current day speedruns.

>>583490121The more time passes the more I can appreciate this game for being the last time Sonic Team gave a shit about artstyle and surreal aesthetics. Every mainline game since has either been nothing but callbacks to previous games or bland uninteresting open world dribble. The gameplay itself wasn't that great though. Too much focus on 2D gameplay and the wisps really take me out of it. The best way to replay it from what I remember is turning the Super Sonic option on because it gets rid of all Wisps and even adds springs to get past the mandatory Wisp sections. UnWiished is honestly a better game.
