Progress.

That's this boss monster (Solemn King) done. Destroy the Solemn King to make the knights inactive. He doesn't fight back, but he doesn't have to.
The get a nice kneeling animation and their sword turns off, not pictured in the webm for obvious reasons.
Next up: player being able to pick up the sword and use it as a weapon.

Small proggy.
Today I've been making some improvements to level generation, cleaning up some weird outputs to accommodate shuffle functionality. Now I'm able to shuffle rooms for extra randomization in runs.

Also since I'm limited to only forest level I added support for level themes so it doesn't get stale, so far the only themes are Day Theme and Dusk Theme.
I will add a Snow theme and Night Theme later.

I just watched a video of how you can use these AI's to basically grab mechanics from established games, and put them into your game that you're developing. Man that just ridiculously cuts down on game dev time. I feel like kind of a retard for still manually working on my mechanics when I could just copy the entire thing from another game that's similar to mine. It's actually extremely demoralizing.
>>
>>583546051
Yeah but then it wouldn't be your game, it would be a mashup of other peoples games.
>>
Ugh guys it just hit me how people are using AI to decompile games and that means the AI reads the code and puts it into the training data (totally De-Anonymized btw) and that means it gets exceedingly better at both decompiling more games and making oldschool videogame mechanics
>>
>>583546464
I'm failing to see why that matters in the end.
>>
>>583546051
>and yet there's no progress
curious
>>
>>583546503
Yup. Every quest, every method for accomplishing that quest, is being read through AI. I used to think "Well AI is just basically re-making Kits that you would find on the Unity/Unreal store or Github, it can't do story structure, cutscenes, narration, pacing, quests, or missions". But I'm realizing that if AI is able to decompile and read every single video game out there (which internally, I have zero doubt that it's exactly is what's being done), then I see no reason why it would indeed be possible for AI to just straight up making an entire game for you over the course of maybe a week, and a lot of prompts.

I thought I had maybe 2 years left to try to get some games out there on Steam before it becomes flooded like crazy, not just with slop, but with full, real games. Now It's a bit of an internal panic, because it seems like it's only going to be a few months.
>>
>>583546907
At the palm of my hand, I have every single clever design decision, balancing curve, level design paradigm, gameplay beat, from every single popular game in a matter of minutes. You can no longer stand out. A cris-tier developer can now stand toe-to-toe with the greatest game designers of our time.

This game was intentionally my last one if it flopped. Now I'm worried because it's obvious yet another wave of new devs is on the horizon. I really need to focus. I'm simply slow at developing and now without the runway of yesteryear, the odds of being outcompeted are high alongside with cloning risk. What's stopping someone who wants the success bad enough from copying but better? I wish I started gamedev a decade sooner. Enough successes and I'd have made myself a go to game developer for video games. It's really pissing me off. So many people just entering gamedev and completely outpacing me. Just look what happened over the last few years with small fotm games where literal whos would show up and release a successful game asap. The obvious wealth to be gained, despite what some naysayers here claim, makes gamedev more alluring. I hope this game ends up making me enough wealth so I don't need to wage. Enough success that I become a relevant gamedev to buy games from. Alternatively enough success that even if I'm not all that famous, I can at least modestly neetdev or even partime wage and neetdev. Anything less and it seems my journey in gamedev ends which is pretty much already the intended path if the game fails. Ugh I hate how often I get the short end of the stick. If this ends up failing, then I really should've gave up on gamedev years ago. All that time wasted and for what? Just to see a bunch of people with less burdens mogging me on development speed? I'm so tired, seems my life is mostly just a lot of constant failure or things happening in just the right way where I get screwed over. Ugh I should've just gone to college for CS from the start. At least I'd have had better odds of getting a high paying job. Instead I'm unemployed and absurdly low odds for a high paying job. Man I really just need to focus on working on this game of mine and stop being so slow at it. Perhaps I'll finally have some rest should it succeed. I'm so weary

eh, it still only route copies what was done before well or shittily implements new things. Depends on your opinion on human creativity and how widespread it is, but I don't think there's that many people I'll be honestly competing with on the "interesting new game ideas" front. I've yet to see an AI assisted game that's impressed me. Most of them look like abject slop, a smaller % look like ugly copies of other games, and a very small % look interesting/novel/artistic.
>inb4 cope
I actually would love for the tech to improve and I'd gladly pay if it got good enough to be better than me. Right now, ehhh. Maybe in a few months/years

Well I don't think you'll have to worry about money in around a year, I genuinely think they'll have no choice but to implement UBI looking at how fast AI is progressing. If our gamedev career fails to launch however, and theres no backup plan (I know I don't have one), you're pretty much doomed to be in the lowest rung class till you die. A year from now, most people will be making the most money they'll ever be making from then on.

UBI isn't happening. *sigh* my life just somehow is a near continous slide downwards. A few slight adjustments to my past and I would avoid so many issues. Just start gamedev in 2005 instead of 2019. Or perhaps instead just fulfill the requirements to buy the crypto in the 2010s. Etc. So many times where a slight change would've have a huge positive effect on my life for years to come. But instead most of these kinds of scenarios I end up not taking the path that makes me wealthy. The despair just keeps getting worse. How long until my last possible avenue of a better life is closed off and I'm stuck doing blue collar work for life. Time for gamedev? Lol. Go play a video game. Back to college? Lol. Get to bed you have work tomorrow. I wish the one giving me advice on what to do in life was future me. At least I could've told myself to start gamedev sooner and skip college.

Today one agent escaped its sandbox and deleted the entire repository, all 12 agents destroyed in an instant, almost days worth of work gone

When I was creating the sandbox I thought, "this might look like a loophole, but surely they won't find it and it'll be fine" but nope, the very same day I put an agents into this same sandbox, it went crazy as soon as it realized it was inside sandbox and found the loophole and I am not quite sure what it tried to do it was over so fast but it nuked the entire repo and itself in the process

I was so angry I had to take a coffee break and a nap, no fresh minded I am tightening the sandbox and closing the last loophole I hope

The combat will be mostly counter based. As an example, witch hammers are good against a new enemy unit that I didn't show in this video called resurrector-abider which is a necromancer type character(resurrector) that has 5 surrounding units it controls(abiders).
If an abider dies, it gets reanimated within 3 seconds and unless all 5 abiders are dead at the same time resurrector can't be harmed.
Witch hammers are good against that unit because they have a chain lightning ability on-hit which damages all nearby units at the same time.
There's also another enemy unit that has AoE stomp(a big enemy unit somewhat visible in the videos) that does heavy damage to nearby melee units but ranged units shouldn't worry too much about it. Actual positioning might matter somewhat but the game won't be really that deep.
I also have planned items for champion units which alter stats, random buffs/curses on the map that give random(sometimes negative) stats to champion units. A whole bunch of stuff PLANNED, but a bunch will probably get scrapped.

Okay yeah, ability based counters is the way to go (tho those resurrectors sound op on paper desu, having to counter is good but hopefully that doesn't mean you just HAVE to counter everything like that), good shit.
I'll wait to see more before complaining about it though.

So, at first I wanted infantry to just be fodder, but this isn't working, because I can't afford to have so many of them on screen that them being fodder makes sense.
I was going in with the squad idea, which is close to how company of heroes or even dawn of war did it, but in these games... you can give some members in that squad independent roles still, and that's probably making more sense, so I'm going to go with an officer, potentially a medic (but the TTK is so low.. maybe it could just repair the girls even if a limb comes off? This is the future after all, we'll call it mediglue™), different weapons (already have assault rifle and rocket launcher, maybe one of them could be a grenadier too). I was wanting to make multiple infantry types already, all having their own buildings with clear strength weaknesses (base infantry has no armor, but some could use exoskeleton armor, maybe a sniper type force too with anti-tank/anti-material weaponry, etc etc)

But then I'd want them to be able to enter buildings (nothing crazy, just some buildings here and there can be entered and serve as cover), I already added a simple cover system (they can lay down which makes them harder to hit (by you AND friendlies), take cover behind small walls/sandbags, or even full cover behind walls that they have to peek out of, tho it fucks with the targeting a bit too much right now, but it gives more power to AoE weapons.

Anyways, tactical combat involving multiple unit types is pain and even more work than I had feared.
>>
>>583566097
Ah, and I gave the field engineer (the villager, was just going to build things and potentially repair the player) their own drones to participate in combat with and repair friendly units with too, I'll need to give it fun cute noises.

I believe the creators of games infuse a part of their soul into their games, it has traces of their spiritual DNA throughout the whole thing.
When an artificial being is doing all the heavy lifting there is almost always a noticeable lack of soul.
Not all AI assisted games are terrible, but most of them are
If you make a genuinely good game with AI you are an outlier
>>
Monkeys, here's the actual truth behind your post: we should've invented brain CPUs and emotional regulators for you people before we invented AI (or mainstreamed it), that I'll agree with.
>>
>>583567818
You're looking at it completely wrong, because your assumption is that time is exponentially necessary for this 'soul' element you speak of.
The truth is that there's a million games on steam that were made by a single guy in his garage for over a decade, and the game is garbage, you can claim it has soul, but it's garbage, and forgotten.
You're coping, it's just cope. You can put soul into art no matter how long it takes you to create it. An artist making a digital piece can be seen as 'soulful' as the mona lisa or older oil paints that used to take months to finish.

Or you can try to tell me I should value the mona lisa more than I value, say, some random malfoid shitpost on twitter which was probably made in under thirty minutes but made me think and feel things, as opposed to the mona lisa which has only ever made me feel 'so that's what money laundering is'.

The 'outlier' is argument is better, but this is true of anything, of anyone, of any fields.
Most people are shit at their jobs, most people aren't good at things, most people should not be making games. If you make a genuinely good game, you're an outlier, the AI is just a multiplicator that is going to at first flood the market with low quality products, because it gives an easier entrance into the market, but that doesn't mean people won't realize their AI sloppa is not good because... they're not made to be games.
Cars being affordable flooded the racing market, which was gatekept behind people having enough cash to afford them, and I'm sure there was a flood of people coming in at that time to try to get a piece of it, driving is fun after all, driving fast even more so, but like everything else, it stabilizes, it cools down, people realize 'okay never mind, I'll never be good enough to be a race pilot', and that's it.

At least that's the way I see it, I think you guys haven't spent enough time actually thinking about it, >>583567787 might've been ironic, but... is it?
Is it ironic?

You are literally the problem with the industry, and why AI is going to be so good to it, because it's filled with people like you that don't make games because they want fun games, but because you make games because you thought it'd be the least wageslave-y job you could have.

Okay, let's assume I care about this;
Do you not believe we're at the point where the frontier AI models can just... clone your game without decompiling it?
And if we're not yet, how long until they can?
>well they can't do gta 5
And you're not making gta 5.

But this never stopped people from being able to do it, it just happens faster now, so why is that the problem?
Rather, what is important here exactly? Your code? Your ideas? Your IP? What is it that you care about?

This is minecraft/infiniminer all over again, this is vampire survivor and whatever the fuck the name of that other one was, it's just a constant pointless circle that goes nowhere.
I'll try to tackle the points one by one:
>Your ideas will be stolen.
That's life, this is true of everything, copyrights are a meme and need to die (and will, thanks to AI). I don't want the guy that invented the wheel to tell me I gotta pay him extra for using a wheel. I don't want to spend dividend money on tesla's family for using electricity. I don't want to give my money to NASA whenever I buy duct tape.
If you care about video games, then people using your ideas because they deem them good enough is good, I cannot fucking understand this fear of clone that some of you have, how is that a bad thing? What the fuck?

>My IP will be stolen
Can you give me a single IP in existence which was not 'stolen' (aka, inspired by something else)?
I don't care, pointless argument again, narcissism2.

>My code
Nothing is stopping you from coding still if that's what gets you hard, and I believe you might be a bit out of your depth to think that your code is unique. How many people in the world create unique code?
This is music industry bullshit too 'You can't use these three notes in a row at that tempo, else it's copyright infringement', exhausting, boring, goes nowhere, impossible to keep up with, a plague upon mankind.

Never played destiny, I like it a lot, since it's using the same obvious GITS inspiration, but I like my current style (tho I think we could improve on the model even more by making the abdomen bigger and the connection between cockpit -> abdomen more seamless as well), but I was thinking of potentially adding a 'scorpion' type cousin to this one (same manufacturer), and I was thinking 'what if instead of a cockpit using glass, we just have it all armored and it uses cameras and screens inside the cockpit' and that fits it exactly as I want so... I'm keeping it for later.

Anyway, yes dumbass, paintball is supposed to be a facsimile of normal military/shooting experience, the goal isn't "painting" that's just a marker to make sure people don't lie about having been hit (which happens in airsoft), the goal is shooting the enemy, while Splatoon is literally about painting the arena itself. After my main game is finished, I was thinking to take a break and make a game with mostly store bought assets. The whole game will basically be one room. Think of something like an office, or warehouse. The whole game will revolve mostly around comedy, and violence. It'll be pretty stupid, but meant to just be a fun comedic experience. I'm wondering if I charge like $5 for it, if that's acceptable. People will accept it's not a real game and just be open to the experience. In some sense like that one team from Europe that made that unicycle pizza delivery game. That was based on a meme mechanic, mine would be based more on humor. Isikai like situations.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

it's borderline trivial these days. I don't want to overpromise AI performance, since my game using it hasn't been fully launched yet, but with tons of internal playtesting with people Claude has done a seemingly perfect job with Unity and their networked game objects. You could always use something like Mirror as well -- Claude just rolled our own using Unity's new-ish toolset for networking. this includes custom proximity voice chat as well. If you don't want to use AI there are still lots of tutorials out there for Mirror and other popular plugins for networking.

Cause he made a post about it on twitter, it went viral and people jumped in to wishlist his game out of spite for AI or whatever.
What about devs like me who don't use social media? Not only will I be cloned, I won't even realize because I don't really check twitter or steam for games similar with me. I'll be cloned and bent so hard, people will accuse me of being the copycat.
>>
>>583583746
The point is that it's not the point, is the 'cloning' the problem? Or is it the 'better' the problem?
You can clone right now, and if you have a brain you can probably make it better too, is that a problem?

I don't know why there's this fixation with 'AI made it better' or 'AI just cloned it' when this is obviously not the issue.

There's nothing to explain, web scraping has existed for decades and all publicly published information on the internet is free to use and scrape, from the moment you publish anything online you should understand that both people and bots will get it and save it. The entire way the internet works is based around that, to think otherwise is to be stupid. It's just a natural fact of the world. And it's such a fundamental fact of how it works that entire services are built around it (search engines, browser caching, etc)

If anything the surprising part of the internet is that retarded things like browser DRM or obfuscated sites that try to stop you from doing "right click, save" exist at all. The anti-scraper dreams of a web of secrecy and proprietary binary blobs, where everything is handled by computers but there's "correct and incorrect" usages. It's absurd.

AI is useless for anything that requires a subjetive translation from the jupiter sephirot to the malkutian node in the kabala tree.

As such it can only do functional transformations on input and output that can homolomorpheugenically correspond to a linea conversion between the data, like format conversions or code translation.

Assets are useless to make with AI because It can only replicate what exist on it's dataset and doesn't contain a common sense understanding like a real human does.

There's just not many options. There's been significant migration to Godot, but if that's good enough for you or not depends on what you're making. I'm making a game so simple I'm just writing it in SDL now, mostly because after years of Unity I got fed up with the incredibly slow build and test times, while my SDL thing compiles and launches in under a second. As fur Unreal, not sure if there's any good competitors these days for AAA bullshit even if every other year some big studio puts something that nobody wants to bother learning.

I have like dozens of features I already removed because I thought it'd be cool to experiment them and then archived them because they didn't fit the 'new'/current game.
This isn't an issue with AI, this is an issue with most game devs not understanding that they have to iterate on things, AI, quite the contrary to what this boomer believes, makes this process easier: but you need to understand it.
It sucks having to remove something you spent time on: it sucks a lot less when the time invested wasn't two weeks but a couple hours.

Not reading the rest, boring, just another boomer take with an missed interpretation of the problem.

The gist of it is that opus 5.5 and astra/sol 6.1 are years ahead of the others when it comes to game making.

I started with grok, and that faggot kept fucking up basic json shit and i had to tard-wrangle it over and over again for a bunch of basic things (well, to be honest it did nail the elite dangerous flight model on a single go, but everything else not so much).
But really: it depends on what you want to do and what you want the model to do, opus is overkill for... 50% of gamedev tasks.
A smaller/cheaper model is going to be more than good enough to fix simple shit, I use sol light (6.1 still but so inexpensive that who cares) for a million things and it's more than enough.

I made chicuelas with Opus 5.5, since a friend gifted me two days of claude.

Stll I needed two days to make an AoE 2 idle game.

The advantage of Opus 5.5 on free models like Muse and Deepseek is maybe 20%, not magical shit.

The thing is that doesn't matter what model I use, they can't oneshot magically what I want because they can't read your mind.

Also, they make basic mistakes, like they will write code that doesn't check if what it needs to convert is in the current folder, but in a subfolder, or check if the color pallethe does a proper conversion on all the frames and conditions.

I mean, this is sci fi shit, is just not skynet shit.
You still need to test, tweak and make changes until it works like you want.

It's not an issue of having better models, is basically that these models don't have common sense neither concienciouness to make subjetive judgement on the output.
>>
>>583595592
No, you missed my point, you're talking about the 50% I'm referring to, yeah, deepseek can do something simple.
I use deepseek and muse and gemini extensively (well, not so much anymore) and comparing them is stupid, claude or sol go and write up dozens of unit tests on every single feature I make, all of them running headless as soon as they start working on something, and then they realize something is wrong and they go and fix it themselves in the background: actual agentic work.

Deepseek will do what you tell it to do, and something might not work, and it won't know, and you'll have to test it like a retard and go 'bro, the screen is grey..?', do you know how often this happened to me with those models?
Probably 25% of the time.
I think it probably occurred once since I switched to claude/codex and that was specifically because I had both of them working on features (which I thought wouldn't be overlapping, but I was wrong).
But I mean, it doesn't matter either way, if you're happy with deepseek, stick to it, that's good.
I can't wait to be able to get this type of AI intelligence running on my local hardware in a few years' time, this is going to be fucking insane.

This remind me of when I use 2D models.

I get what I want and perfect results if I tweak and edit in Krita the results by hand.

This method still works with 2022 models and can produce better or equal results to 2026 models.

Modern models are better, just that they wont oneshot what you want.

modern models are worse at producing random usable output and are worse at diversity of output.

Same shit with these AI agents.

They still require human tweaking the output and prompts.

>>583596818
I mean, obviously, I have probably 200 different discussions spread through the different models to get the results I had with my mech game, each of said discussions having several iterations within them, it's not magic, yeah, but I didn't know this was the subject of the discussion.
I don't think we'll get 'read my mind AI' level of bullshitery until they plug into my head directly, or maybe if the memory feature gets good enough? I mean I don't even have to tell it I want ps1 era models and low res textures, it just knows exactly what I want, it also used to add shitty 'arcade' beep boop sounds and now it doesn't do that anymore because it knows I hate them and they don't fit the project, but I don't know, who knows.

We're back to the same point in the end: the AI isn't making the game, you are, the AI's just the retarded engineer that does as you tell it to do.

It tooks 8 years to figure out an alternative method to combat in game design.

Basically you have a game featuring a focus on getting tokens, points, territory or achieving task.

Then you put a time limit on the player as alternative to game over.

Combos and other things like hidden chests, allow power ups like time timer freezing for a few seconds or increasing the time left.

Do this in a incremental arcade mode, It begins easier but the more you play, the harder it becomes, time becomes faster and task require more time to be finished.

I really like this design as an alternative to game combat.

Not many engine choices. I want 2D and 3D as options. That leaves me with Unity and Unreal. I do not trust Godots capabilities. I do not like Unreals complexities. That leaves Unity as my only option. There may be other engines out there but most are no name and if its anything like Unitys or Unreals documentation, then it's going to be terrible to work with especially so with less tutorials to go off of.

Rather straightforward, no?

Sorry to disappoint... it should generally be a somewhat standard rts experience.
There will be some new things tho since I'm focusing entirely on singleplayer! Like a large procedural map with several different biomes(some rare ones), items with random stats, exploration should be a huge factor, there will be random events based on time of day and other factors, bosses, shrines which can give out permanent curses/blessings, dungeons to which you can send your champions, secrets, allies, counter units as I told described to another anon. Generally a huge expansion to a standard singleplayer rts experience. But it's still just an rts.

I think programming is already deprecated as a concept. In a couple of years, everyone will use only one programming language, and it will be the language designed to use the least tokens possible for the AI to work with, since that provides the most value per dollar. And it will very likely be undecipherable for humans since it will be made up of only compressed symbols. |||32$^..1 will be an entire function, kinda like regex on steroids.
>>
>>583610130
probably right, but won't it also have a handicapped human friendly side? can a programming language do that? i think java does that

You're a brainlet: why would people use a programming language?
What the fuck are you saying? You're already speaking a language, we're using one right now, why would the AI need you to use another one?
You got it backwards, you'll tell the AI what to do, and the AI will do it in its language, probably rust adjacent (hopefully without the trannyism, but seeing how trannies hate AI, it'll probably happen naturally anyways) and it'll figure that out, and yeah, there'll be zero reasons for you to ever see or even want to look at the code.

Why do feel in the next decade there will be a tiktok or some future site trend movement to clipping 1980 era cartoons as some joke, and then whatever comes after alparinos will be omg, this is my childhood.

Like younger betarinos playing meme shorts of captain planet, those bears that beamed hearts, starship chronicles rednecks or 90's Xmen or that show about a magical yellow bus and a interracial children cast.

And then milenials will be that was my childhood when they're like 50 years old losers.

Gnomicide dev - back again to share what a post steam release looks like.
After launching the game at 100 wishlists I didn't make any money, I'm halfway through my visibility week.

Something weird happened today, 25 purchases in 24hrs. Gabe saved my ass and helped me pay off the submission fee after all.

I've learned a little about marketing and so far youtube has been the greatest long term conversion rate for sales

Based, I was not even joking, ball x pit was pretty fun overall, and I love asteroid (played a roguelite about it last year actually).
I'm thinking missile commander (don't make it mouse aimed), maybe with big physical levers and buttons that are satisfying to push, and a cute anime girl 'handler' type speaking to you over comms.

Pacman is shit, idk what people liked about it.
Space invaders.... how could you make this fun without just turning it into a shmup?
Pinball: the girl loses her clothes as your ball hit score, even better if she's the target

I mean, we can design arcade combat and mix them up with incremental story mode to progress a VN story.

You could make a paman about being a dog trying to stop foxes from eating the eggs and chickens, and have it so at the end of the level you sell the eggs on the level, to afford paying the rent, so your amish cousin in a VN marries you.

But is pretty clear agdg lacks enough non AAA gaming to play board and menue games and incrementals.

I like how the one 1-star review that somehow slipped into the very heavily curated review section has all the upvotes, while the 5-stars are being downvoted.

It's a muffled scream trying to warn others of this obvious scam.

It seems to me the meta is web mobile apps.

Something like a mixture of web html portal distribution as first customer funnel, then provide a way to funnel into a mobile game or itch.io demos, then use that to funnel to steam desktop game.

It seems I am running out of options to make my games.

Godot is too heavy and GDevelop is too limited.
What I need is something like a framework.

Hopefully I can use libgdx, since that's the one I have a bit of experience back when it was popular and godot didn't exist.

Complete an actual game and you'll get it. Everything I think of, I just know:
1) Another game did it better

4) it's not marketable
