Tile painting is a perfect example. In the past, a developer would design a dozen or so tiles, then use those to paint an entire huge map. The tiles would have as much variety as there are tile maps made by the developer. Think Oblivion and Skyrim large area ground. Then you could take a second sweep and add fauna, or you can make more tiles that already have fauna and topographic elements. Now, you can tell an ai to look at just a handful of tiles a human made, iterate 100 variations, and now you saved that human days or weeks of work. A human moving a few topographic elements around to make 100 different tiles is not meaningfully different than an ai doing it. There is a practical, beneficial, and responsible application of AI in game development.The downside is when people try to automate things that shouldn't be automated. AI shouldn't be anywhere near dialogue, storyboarding, art assets, concept art, character writing, etc. Anything that is complicated, or important, or nuanced just should be 100% humans.Veilguard is a stark reminder that the worst of humanity can still make something that is an affront to decency, but on average, I'd still rather have an average writer than a LLM.Thankfully we don't have to worry about this for a while still, since Divinity, Dark Heresy, Solasta2, Lich Wars, and several other upcoming crpg look good, but it is something interesting to keep an eye on.

The big thing I don't see people talk enough about isn't just using an LLM like "ok robot make me a computer game". That's retard mode. But the things I've found it does insanely well is making prototypes and tools. Like a short prompt and 10 min later I have a single-serving little sandbox. Authoring tools, scripting, all the obnoxious "make the thing hook up to the other thing" stuff, just done without a thought.Using LLMs this way and with some slight understanding of how games and software in general works, and you're almost to a point of just describing your game and having it summoned into existence.Don't let it near anything creative though, but as a toolmaker it's such a huge game-changer.

Eh, ever since they first got acquired by a private equity firm a while ago, this was always a possibility. I can't say I'm entirely surprised, going by how these equity firms generally operate, combined with the rough shape bioware has been in for a few years.It's bittersweet. On the one hand, a studio that made several of the best crpg's ever made was just shut down. Baldur's Gate, NWN1, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, KotOR1, swtor, Jade Empire. There was a time where the Bioware logo on your computer screen meant you were in store for kino. One of the big names was just shut down by a private equity firm, and usually that's sad to see.But on the other hand, I think we can all agree bioware has been in rough shape, and has been for several years. Mass Effect 3 was still an alright game, but it's where we started to see some issues. But then every game after had a list of issues. I think Dragon Age 3 was still a good game overall, especially the Tresspasser dlc and the Orlesian party mission. And I think Andromeda improved a few gameplay elements and some fun combat abilities, but the cast and the story and the antagonist and the dialogue were weaker. Then, we come to the elephant in the room, which is that Veilguard was unironically one of the worst games I have ever played in my entire life of playing hundreds of games, and I don't say that lightly. It genuinely felt like sabotage, it was worse than an amateur's first safe writing, it felt intentional.Same thing happened to Blizzard. The high quality workers who made the company got old and retired, and the new generation couldn't fill the shoes. Weekes even had a midlife crisis.So I think overall I am ok to see Bioware simply laid to rest. The shambling corpse shitting out Veilguards was just a mockery of their former selves. I'm sad they ended on a low note, I would have been happy to maybe see a kotor remake or a ME4 that was good so the could go out on a high note, but we don't always get what we want.

The real Bioware died a long time ago. But they were giants once upon a time, and they created a lot of characters that people still obsess over decades later. I was browsing AO3 the other day and I saw someone published a story about Bastila and Mission masturbating together, and that's a game that is more than twenty years old. Cultural staying power that hardly anything or anyone has now. Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KotOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, what a run. There was a time where you could just say "unannounced Bioware title" and people were ready to buy it on the name alone. A big part of their demise is the same thing driving the rest of the industry into the ground, hiring a lot of activists who think reddit is real and becoming hostage to your own employees. But I think an underrated part of it is just being a Canadian studio in a time where Canada was totally overrun. The demographics of Canada in 2000 vs. 2026 are very different, and I bet the demographics of Bioware changed the same way in the same time. Really hard to make a good game with a lot of Manveers, Mandeeps, and Mansuks running around. You add Lilith to the mix and the whole enterprise is finished.

So I dunno what that uncanny nonsense was trying to do but it didn't do it well.I wanted to take the two handed fighter path but my dueling sword isn't actually a 2 handed weapon even if I 2hand wield it all the time.. so I went with something about hellforged. This path seems to work way better than the sword saint.
