Tails isn't a hyper-independent badass, and that's okay. A character's value isn’t determined by how strong or self-sufficient they are, and needing help sometimes doesn't make him useless. He's an intelligent kid with a good heart who's still learning how to face his fears. Sometimes he manages it on his own, but when he doesn't, it just shows that he has friends who are willing to pick him back up and help him keep going. It's a good message to show any kid who's struggling with their own self-worth. You do not need to be Chad to be someone worth loving.

Tails is humble and self-critical by nature, and he has a goal of constantly improving himself. On top of that, due to being weird and getting bullied for it, his environment also did not encourage him to think highly of himself. However, Tails is capable and can bring himself to rise up to the occasion when needed. No matter how big his achievements are he is not naturally inclined to value them accurately if at all. Seeing Sonic and becoming friends with him has inspired Tails to try to be more confident in himself, realizing that he can be cool, and that his quirks are not something to be ashamed of. Tails was already having solo adventures (as seen in Tails Adventures for example) before he even met Sonic, even if Tails doesn't think highly of those adventures
