I like the adaptations just fine, including the movies. To me they are all just their own thing, with Sonic X being the closest. When it comes to character discussions, I think it's more than obvious Archie is not an example of how the characters would act in a given situation, but the only character I really see put that argument out for anymore is Shadow. As far as I'm concerned, the english dubs of the games are not canon. The comics never stood a chance in my head. I was practically socialized against anything western Sonic since I already knew about the whole "4kids BAD" mindset as a kid and Molly's death censorship. As a 12 year old I was already under the impression "America makes Sonic wrong". The english versions of japanese Sonic materials were "wrong" in such an obvious way that I eventually just got that impression. All that said, I didn't hate Archie. To me it's like that Brazillian Megaman comic where Roll's tits are out all the time. It isn't really Sonic, it's a spinoff adaptation of Sonic. IDW also feels that way 90% of the time too. I like the non canon stuff as their own things. It can be bothersome when people insist that this is how the characters "are supposed to be" but I only ever see that with Archiedow these days.
What's funny is Maekawa pushed for Shadow to use "boku". I wonder if the rest of Sonic Team wanted him to use "ore" like Sonic. The description for Terios who was supposed to be an outright bad guy sounded like an ore kind of hedgehog.

I am a proud purist. I think that Sonic Team is generally correct about the characters they conceptualized, created, wrote, and own. I think that there are nuances to these characters that can only be properly understood by looking into the culture of their country of origin. I think that if the people who created the character say something about them, it should be treated as more important than what a fan says. I think that stories and art have meaning to them, which is why people love these characters in the first place, and that meaning should be preserved so future generations can also find joy in it. I think this makes some people here very very angry for reasons they cannot articulate.
