BG2 remains king in terms of romance because there is just so much of it. Romance in CRPGs is just a few sprinkles of dialogue here and there while the rest of it is just the companion's regular storyline, BG2 is the only one with proper romantic storylines that, depending on how fast you are, may span almost the entire game. Makes the relationship way more realistic and deeper

Eventually I caved and searched up the solution. Turns out that a sceptre I found a good while ago is the key. If you have it in your inventory, your character will comment on it. Since no one in my party uses sceptres and it takes up a fair bit of space, I stuffed it in my pack mule and forgot about it. When it's being carried by the pack animal no one comments so I ran around looking for a crank to put in the thing.
