Any fantasy "kitchen sink" setting is at all times threatened by the possibility of becoming an incomprehensible mix of random garbage. The way these sorts of setting remain coherent is by grouping everything together based on theme. The more you allow the theming of this or that element of the game to be adulterated by off-theme elements, the more you allow your setting to become a big goulash of random bullshit.Take the factions during Vanilla WoW. A person who knew nothing about Warcraft could come in and see that one side is basically your classic LotR style good-guy races and the other side are the barbarian monsters and the dark undead. So they know, pretty much at a glance, what each side is all about. Then look at what the factions have become in retail and how they're just a bunch of random shit thrown at the wall and unless you have friends you want to play with or a specific race you wanted to play, it really just comes down to if you favorite color is red or blue. No theme at all.
