I think one problem with Surge and Sonic's hatred is that there's no layer of it being charming.Sonic teases Knuckles and they're also competitive. They're legitimate friends.Sonic tries to pick at Shadow, he has charming moments when he does so, and Shadow just doesn't care and either thinks Sonic is an annoyance in his way or an objection to his very own existence.Even Eggman, Sonic's greatest enemy, has a subtle hidden underlayer of 'respect' or whatever. He hates Sonic for spoiling his plans but Eggman treats ambition in relation to Sonic the way Sonic treats adventure in relation to Eggman.Surge? She is a broken girl who blames Sonic for her very existence.
