Sandbox/whatever you wanna call it newfag here, got swept up by watching some videos over the years about the genre + Elin releasing, but the genre is pretty interesting and I'm curious if there's any decent smaller scale/coop multiplayer games in the same genre? I know SS13 or whatever exists but it seems too large scale in multiplayer, and I'm just looking for something I can fuck around with a small handful of friends with, like 4 or 5ish. Do those types of games exist? Are there any other genres you anons may recommend as well? RTS seems fun with some small friends too and seems pretty similar to this genre as well. Is AoE2 a good starting point? I have very little knowledge on these genres as a whole.
Bump
>>1514615Not sure what you mean by the "Sandbox" genre. SS13 and Elin have very little in common, Im not sure what made you think that (one is social deduction and the other is a roguelike). If you're looking for games to fuck around with friends in then I'd look at Barotrama, Factorio and Garrys Mod. As for RTS games I personally recommend Zero-K. These were all me and friends favorites to play with each other, all very good games.
>>1515547Sorry, that's totally fair to say I've just heard "sandbox" be universally applied to those kinds of games and just assumed that's the easier distinction to make.I suppose to make it easier, I'm looking for games with the kind of freedom SS13 or Elin supply in terms of just having so many options to give to the player. Things are open-ended and nonlinear and progression could be essentially called completely random and the goal is to more or less survive for as long as possible. That's the kind of thing those games make me think of, yea SS13 has more of a focus on figuring out other players and etc, and Elin is about the pure randomization and dealing with the hand you're dealt, but I feel in both examples (at least from the little I've seen/experienced) they offer a mountain of options and no specific "script" to go off of. It's more focused than a game like Minecraft but not as "structured" as a game like Risk of Rain if that makes sense? If it makes it easier, games like Elin but multiplayer can be a much easier question to ask I guess.I'll still try out your recommendations anyway as a start, especially Zero-K. Appreciated anon!
>>1515585Yeah both SS13 and Elin have sandbox elements, but like Minecraft it isnt the core the game lol. I see what you mean now.I really never heard of a multiplayer roguelike. The closest thing would probably be MUDs or SS13, but neither of those things really are roguelikes. But that shouldnt stop you from looking, heres some websites that could help in your search.roguebasin.comgrapevine.hausgame-scry.online/browse/mud

>I'm curious if there's any decent smaller scale/coop multiplayer games in the same genreGod I wish. SS13 remains one of my most favorite games ever, but no game comes close to the massive span of what that game simulates along with its normal gameplay. I've seen games that go in depth with the atmospherics simulation, the chemical reactions, the social deduction, or the body mechanics. But I have never seen it all in one package AND in a multiplayer format besides from SS13. I've seen some roguelikes dip into it but no fun with friends : (

You should try nodded minecraft, tons of fun autistic mods that you can try out.
>>1547671Oxygen Not IncludedSpace Chem and Opus MagnumThe Ship and Town of SalemForgot what I was thinking about for this oneAs for roguelikes all I had in mind when I was writing that was CataclysmDDA and Dwarf Fortress, but Im sure theres others that cover the same scales.
>>1561725You have no taste
I get op idea, something like cdda but multiplayer, mmmh, i would love to play something like that, you could mod rimworld enough(? I dont know, there isnt one currently, the other games anons said dont reach the idea i had in mind... something like a dwarf fortress adventure mode but multiplayer or a stone soup multiplayer would be literally world changing (at least to me)
Maybe this is the moment where every anon unites in harmony for the greatest autism project 4chan has seen... surpassing dwafr fortress ofc
I've been playing with the idea of a large server multiplayer roguelike for a long while but I'm not sure there's a sweet spot where turn based roguelike mechanics smashed into a real time package work in a fun way.
>>1572522Yeah thats kinda the main problem i imagine too it could work with something like 3 max otherwise it would be unbearable
>>1515585Yeah Zero-K is kino, Company of Heroes 2 is also pretty fun with friends if you want a more gritty RTS. Wouldn't bother with online matchmaking though as it's mostly composed of chinks/balding europeans.
I keep on getting fucked up by goblin wizards, and where the fuck is the trainer that sells fishing

I had fun playing modded minecraft with friends, lately terrafirmacraft+ and gregtech new horizons. Regular vanilla minecraft isn't the best sandbox game but Ive had plenty of multiplayer fun with mods. Try it.

>>1514615Good small group games I've played with my group recently:Barotrauma - Work together to crew a sub and survive an underwater shithole full of giant monsters. Decent coordination required, good scalability for player count, I recommend at least four but bots can fill in for most roles if need be.Duck Game - Absolute peak fast paced death match, tons of maps and weapons keep things fresh and you can download thousands more on the workshop, tons of depth from simple interactions of objects on the map, extreme skill ceiling, supports up to 8 or more if you mod it, I'd say at least 3 is the magic number so if there's a skill imbalance it isn't just the weaker player getting steamrolledFactorio - Automate resource harvesting and processing to make increasingly advanced technology. Supports virtually infinite players, extreme freedom of action, tons of mods and settings to tweak to your tasteAbiotic Factor - Fun open world survival crafting-like game set in what is basically the Black Mesa facility after the resonance cascade. Play as weak dork scientists who can craft OP items from garbage to escape the facility while monsters and death squads hunt you down. Supports up to 6 players. In early access now, might be good to wait for full release.Beyond All Reason - Basically a Total Annihilation mod, it's free and supports lots of players, has lots of good QoL features for an RTS. Team games (2v2+) are popular and IMO are a bit more fun and relaxing than the typical RTS 1v1 contest of wills.AI War - Very large scale RTS game supporting up to 8 players. A unique take on a PvE RTS, the game is a campaign length asymmetric coop battle against a very powerful but predictable enemy. Many expansions released over time add tons of features and content, so there is high replayability, and the difficulty can vary immensely based on your settings. Pretty difficult to learn at first, but once one player knows how things work it's a lot easier to explain.
>>1514615I don't know if you or anyone else ios still looking, OP, but from what I know about Elin (never played and probably never will), I recommend you give Wayward a look. It's a survivalcraft sandbox game. Mostly focused around low power survival, highly detailed crafting, and fantasy exploration. It's turn based but the developers added some weird real time simulturn system to allow people to do multiplayer in real time.
Have you heard of immersive sims OP? They might be what you are looking for.
How do I make / where do I get nails?
Is it supposed to be a joke that I found garbage bags all over my yard so I went and threw them in the wilderness and then when I got home I had a package and inside was a garbage bag? Kek

>>1925676Wurm was terrible in f2p, glad it still exists though. I played a real long time ago, capped at the f2p server then got all hyped up for the Premium. Lasted there for about 2 months, it just wasn't as great. It was basically dead or dying, lots of cool shit but really nothing for noobs to do but stare at. Fun to explore for a bit, but not to play with. And the grind got harder too. This is where I realized I actually don't like MMORPGs and left.
