anyone know of any lesser known games with long standing dedicated communities? kind of like SS13 was back in 2010 before everyone found out about it
>>
off of the top of my head:
>Empires
old-ass Half Life 2 mod from 2008 that's still supported and regularly played to this day. it's an RTS/class-based multiplayer hybrid like Natural Selection except it's set in a sort of retrofuturistic race war with an emphasis on janky source vehicle combat. it probably sounds like a fucking mess from that description but it's actually really fun, and AFAIK it's steam version is technically a standalone title now and doesn't even need HL2 to run it
I haven't played it in a couple years myself since I became a nightshift wagie but it still gets 50~ players each Saturday and Sunday and a few of them have been playing since release

>NeoTokyo
another HL2 mod from 2009, it's not officially supported (I believe the source code has been lost so the game couldn't be handed off to anybody) but still gets 30~ players on Friday pickup games organised by a steam group. it has an amazing art direction and setting based off of Shirow Masamune and it's gameplay is styled off of Counter Strike except with cloaking nip cyborgs, but unlike actual Counter Strike it struck a good balance between chaotic fun and hardcore, predictable, skill-rewarding gameplay rather than going full-bore into the "hardcore" aspect; meaning it has fun stuff that spreadsheet-brained CS:GO-era autists would screech at such as large team sizes, physics props, friendly fire and so on. also has a standalone steam version.

>Quake III Arena
doesn't really need an introduction, it's Quake and I believe the most active Quake title to this day. I haven't actually played any games of it myself but I assume it's heavily gatekept by a small, elite group that have been playing since release 25 years ago and are able to do shit like accurately map long-range airshot trajectories in their head from any angle, and I don't mean this in a "heh heh are you up for the challenge buddy" kind of thing either. also, still sold at $14.99 US despite being a quarter-century old

Like classic games or how long ago is "long standing"
>>
Id argue SS13 still is. The game as a whole has been bleeding players since the ssethrugees settled in and lots of old mainstay servers have either been dwindling in playercounts or shut down. Never had any presense outside of the sseth video and that streamerfaggot who played for a couple months then got bored.
>>
I do but I am not going to share.

Blockland. Kinda

>>
I was going to say HellMOO but fuck I didnt realize it shut down a few years ago shit

Rest in peace
>>
Movie Battles 2 mod for Jedi Academy
>>
Halo 1 (the original pc version, not the remasters) still has active multiplayer, shit's fun but don't expect people to talk much
>>
>>1687974
HATEmoo is still going I think, ironically set up the last time Crymore shut down Hellmoo
Not sure if Inferno still is though, which was set up at the same time
>>
>>1644957
I saw Microsoft Allegiance announce they're celebrating their 25th year the other day
It's a space fighter game, like Free space, has been community run for ages

Does Ultima Online still have a lot of player ran shards?
There used to be a very large role playing community
>>
Theres tons of old source games that still have an active playerbase. These are some I recommend:

>Zombie Panic! Source
Remake of an old half life mod, humans vs zombies. Zombies kill humans that turn into more zombies, humans can board up and hunker down in buildings. The current dev team has a stick up their asses and are imbeciles when it comes to balancing. 2.4 and below are pretty unscarred from their faggotry, you should give it a try with friends.

>Fistful of Frags
Wild west shooter, with all the guns and fun from the 19th century. The firearms work accurately to the period, and it makes for really great gameplay. There's no easy automatic shooting, all of the guns take significant time to fire and reload which gives you plenty of opportunity to dodge, maneuver and such. Normally running around with melee weapons wouldn't work out as well or as fun in a more modern theme but here it works excellently because of the awkward guns.

>Natural Selection 2
Another remake of an old half life mod, humans vs alien scum. Humans get guns to shoot. Aliens get to evolve to higher lifeforms. Each team is given a commander who oversees the battlefield and has special abilities. Pretty fun besides from the community servers always being laggy, but that's probably just on my end.

>Obsidian Conflict
Half-Life 2 co-op mod, Sven for Source. Has tons of fun custom maps.

I dont I'm a prime newfag

>>Zombie Panic! Source
Best source mod. I can't believe the devs handed their game over to retarded Brazilians.
>>
I've personally got sunken into Rule the Waves 3, its an autistic shipbuilding game with a grand scale and huge amount of control. You go from 1890s ironclads to cold war era corvettes, controlling each detail of the ships armor, armaments, all the sorts. There's a general thread up in /vst/ semi-regularly.

Have you heard about SS14? Much better alternative to SS13

Mabinogi
UO
Secret World Legends
I -think- APB still has players?
Dungeons and Dragons online
Let It Die (remake/sequel never ever)
Conan Exiles
EVE online (EVE is pretty well known I know but it very much fits the 'small but hyper dedicated autistic community')
Dofus/Wakfu
Everquest still has some very populated/dedicated private servers.
Star Wars Galaxies

There is still a Hell shard up with a bunch of legitimate tranny devs, it came up shortly after Hellmoo went down. It's called Samsara, some new content but nothing crazy. I haven't touched it in about a year, maybe there's a lot more stuff now (almost certainly not)
>>
>>1781386
Is Wakfu based on some anime/manga? I see its stylized as such but the devs are french.

No

I can vouch for this, a lot of customization and people who have been hanging around a decade

jedi academy/movie battles 2
myst online: uru live
basically the MUD scene as a whole. the RP-focused ones especially tend to have admins who have been playing daily for 25 years (and are invariably deeply mentally disturbed)
honorary mention to motion twin autists, die2note only died because flash did

the ACTUALLY good byond games are all dead by now
rip mitadake high
rip cowrp

this is how i found out epicmafia died :( bleak era for browser games

>Golf
Out of all GAAS that couldve been brought back, why a anime golfing game?
>>
>>1893694
This game is as inactive as Neotokyo which is over a decade old and a mod propped up by a community that plays on the weekend. The due process devs had good ideas but couldn't gather a real playerbase. Even old games like Red Orc 2 have more active players daily

Land of Lords, I remember playing that during the pandemic with a bunch of other /vst/ tards

Project Zomboid
Last I heard it was still chugging along in development hell. Ill really recommend it once it releases in 20 years.

>>1645219
>I assume it's heavily gatekept by a small, elite group that have been playing since release 25 years ago
Right on, fpsclassico has a vice grip on this game. They run all major discussion centers (the discord mainly) for the game and spam the server browsers with proxys that funnel people over to their shit. Heard they even had a client they shilled to new players that only showed their own servers on the serverlists lol.
>>
>>1919410
What do you mean project zomboid is "lesser known"? I see youtube videos that get 100k views concerning it
>>
>>1927784
I guess I didnt see how popular it got when I wasnt looking, damn.

Still in development hell lol
>>
>>1644957
define "longstanding"
