How come there isn't a thread for one of the best racing games of all time? Both versions can be played online too!

>Crash Team Racing (1999)
1) Get a Playstation BIOS file (Preferably SCPH-7501) and an original US CTR dump image from somewhere
2) Download Launcher from https://www.online-ctr.com/ and follow instructions
3) Configure your controls (or click automatic mapping when it prompts you)
4) Pick a server and room (or make a private one using your IP)
5) Share the info and wait for anons to join
As simple as that!

>Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled (NO CROSSPLAY)
1) Go to online
2) Wait while it loads
3) Matchmaking mode should probably connect anons together considering the online is not very active anymore, but if that doesn't work, players will need to add each other as friends in their platform of choice in order to make a Private Lobby
4) Wait a lot while it loads
5!) VERY IMPORTANT, since the game loads slightly better in newer consoles (PS5, Switch 2, Xbox X) it's inadvisable to skip the intro cutscene as it'll desync with other players and softlock the race lol

Hopefully we can get some games going soon!

I'm no expert by any means, at least not in the original CTR, I played it as a kid so I know a fair share of tricks but most of my arcane knowledge about it got replaced by Nitro Fueled's mechanics.

Hopefully we can get some more (You)s here to organize a play group soon.

How many people are playing CTR1 online, is it a lot? Is there enough people to find games where you don't have to mess around on a discord, because I'm not fucking bothering with discord matchmaking bullshit anymore.
>>
>>1856416
It's died down a bit, most of the servers I've seen at are 0/8 but if you join one you start getting people as you play more races, makes me wonder if they have some sort of notification for when a player is on because it always happens after I finish a race alone.
>>
Tried to get NF working on Ryujinx and it had unbelievable lag, texture issues, and audio issues. What am I doing wrong?
>>
Glad to see a thread for this up. I honestly keep forgetting /vm/ is a thing. Karters 2 news hitting today and seeing threads about it led me to checking here.
I worked as part of the Custom Team Racing crew for CTR [PS1] but I've stepped back to take time for myself and try other things. I'm currently playing around with original character designs whilst trying to keep it in line with the theming and designs of Crash. If you've got questions; feel free.

>>
>>1873101
I played a beta/test version a few years back, the game was feeling okay all around, but when you got above a certain speed, it felt like driving on ice. The boost after a fall also felt like your kart weighted nothing, whereas CTR feels good when you slam back on the track. It's probably good for a few hours, but I would put it below both CTR games.

>>

>>
>>1914328
Retro mode makes all turbopads be Ultimate Sacred Fire (the highest turbo tier in the game), also it modifies U-turning so it doesn't eat your reserves if you do it on the ground.

Do you model in Blender? How hard is it working within the constraints of PS1 graphics or it being a mod/PC emulated let you ignore some of the limitations like it being low poly and stuff?
>>
>>1920667
PS1 graphics operates with tris and quads. No ngons allowed. Keep things as optimized as you can whilst maintaining quality.
Environments can currently be textured - characters and their karts can not.
No rigs or animations at this time, so everything that's currently custom-made is static.
>>
>>1920685
>characters and their karts can not
That's a shame, why though?
Do you have any pictures of custom stuff you and the rest of the team has done?
>>
>>1920708
>That's a shame, why though?
I think we don't currently have access to the parts of memory that store textures for characters - or that if we do; we're currently unable to edit them due to where and how they're stored. I'm not technical-minded so I'm not the best person to ask on that.

What's the point? You're not competing for world records, you're choosing to play less and wait more for people that don't want to/don't know how to take the shortcut, why not actually enjoy the act of racing instead of what's practically cheating yourself from playing cool parts of the tracks?

unless someone retrofits the tracks with different checkpoints you're kinda stuck with that shit.
at least in the karters ports of the tracks there are mandatory checkpoints along the main route so the mega cuts no longer make progress.

I learned from this thread that /v/ is very divided about The Karters.
>>
>>1953338
I like the game but let's be honest : If Nitro-Fueled had a PC port, no one would give a damn about a $30 early access game by 4 poles who already went for a rugpull once and then delayed the launch of their new game version hours before it was supposed to go online.
>>
>>1953542
Honestly if NF was on PC I'd still play Karters just for the mods. That said I wasn't aware of the history of the devs rug pulling and delaying the game like you mention, aside from a post on that thread that said something similar.
>>
>>1953542
If the game was 15 dollars I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Maybe next Steam sale.
>>
Is CTR nitro fueled playable with the same launcher from CTR 1999?
>>
>>1954893
From the OP? No. You need the actual game on console to play online.

I guess it could be possible to play over netplay in a Switch emulator but that would mean splitscreen and probably not a great connection.
>>
>>1953645
I think the team had a change of heart (or lead dev), and came back to make a real game after their first con attempt. I mean, the old trailer was even missing the game logo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLw4TbgIUQc
Modding on NF would also be a thing, some guy has modified the N.Sane Trilogy to load new levels and characters, and CTR:NF runs on the same engine. If I recall correctly there's also a file browser for the game data folders that showed that every single file that was added/modified by updates is stored in a single archive, which I'm willing to bet is what gave NF such long load times.
Modding on TK2 is cool and all, but I can't help but feel that the thousands of mute model swaps using the default template and anims as well as the Day1 (or even Day0 since some of them were made during the beta) port of every PS1 CTR track on the workshop doesn't scream "Quality Mods" to me, which is a shame since the mod tools on Github look really well made and documented.
The game right now seems like it has some foundations, but it's weird to me that the game seems made to be completed by mods in most aspects (tracks, characters, karts), while there is still unfinished or dropped content in there.
Sorry for the blogpost, but I'm sad that there's still no other good kart game with a CTR/DKR adventure mode, and while TK2 devs have one planned, I think the IAs and items are too busted for it to be good. Also, I can't help but feel that >>1954757 is right on, and that the game is too niche to get to a 1.0 at $30 price point.
>>
>>1955176
>but I can't help but feel that the thousands of mute model swaps using the default template and anims as well as the Day1 (or even Day0 since some of them were made during the beta) port of every PS1 CTR track on the workshop doesn't scream "Quality Mods" to me
That's a good point to be fair, only recently mods with proper voice over and even custom animations started appearing, looks like people are getting used to the modding tools.

In regards to vanilla, so far the game released with 16 original tracks, 6 kart models and I think about 6 different wheels, so it's not as barebones for a 0.5 or whatever version they released EA as, but the weekly updates they are doing makes me feel hopeful that they will continue to improve and add to it. They are adding an adventure mode too iirc. I'd keep the price low until they have a proper 1.0 version though, 30 dollars right now is pretty steep, on my region the game only costed 12 so what's up with that?

>In regards to vanilla, so far the game released with 16 original tracks, 6 kart models and I think about 6 different wheels, so it's not as barebones for a 0.5
I'm still waiting for that adventure mode and any kind of item rework before I make my opinion on the game as a whole, but yeah I agree, there's content in the vanilla game. What's weird is how unpolished it all feels : Every character has lots of alternate skins with several colors, yet how you unlock them is weirdly arbitrary. There's several kart bodies, yet all but the default have sitting/clipping issues with their wheels and drivers (although some of these issues only show up in the preview, and look fine in-game), etc.
I guess I can't help but compare it with other AA/AAA games like CTR, MKWii or the Sonic racing games, and given the dev team size it's a tad unfair.
And I guess they got their regional pricing set up for a $30 base price and lowered it everywhere else, so if anybody can get it for $15, I' say go for it.
>>
>>1956197
They absolutely need to rework the items, I hate the "lol just press shoot and forget about it" auto-aim weapons, and it's crazy that they don't have a banana peel type of item.
I wonder if they have problems implementing them or they are Platinum N. Tropy tier whiners that hate the fact that there's a nitro crate on their precious optimal line.
>>
>>1960541
CTR does have a couple items that are fire-and-forget, notably the Warp Orb, N. Tropy Clock, and Missiles. So it's not unreasonable to have a few more, the issue is that's all there is in TK2
The health system itself is absolutely an attempt at letting players preserve their momentum so that 1 stray hit doesn't hose them for the entire race. Especially all the ways that first place can deal with the blue shell equivalent to maintain their lead.
Not like the dev doesn't know that items need a rebalance, it's sitting on the roadmap of things to do so I'm not too concerned about it at the moment. The fact that there is no potential for skillshots outside of waiting to target a specific player is silly.

>>
Jesus, what an intricate level that was. Wonder if it comes from an actual racing game?
>>

7 minute race is fucking miserable though, goddamn
>>
>>1973925
Somebody imported Nürburgring, I think last time I played it, it took me like 20 minutes to finish lmao

Also, isn't it impressive that Tiger Temple's shortcut works here?
>>
Using the Tank feels shameful lol
>>
I think I prefer DK Jungle backwards lmao
>>
You fell through the ground too, huh?
>>
Wish there was a search function from here, I want to play on Twilight Tour
>>
>>1973954
the update from today should let you sort things and search unless I'm completely misinterpreting the post
>>
>>1973957
It does but not from this lobby screen form what I gather, just the "main" track select screen.

lmao, let's call it for now then, it's 12am here and got work tomorrow.

GGs, see ya next time
>>
I hope one day they'll let us download other players skins/karts like we do for tracks. Seeing the default characters makes me acutely aware that I'm missing them.
>>
>>1973964
Oh yeah, I really hope they do. I mean if they can do that with tracks why not allow it for characters/karts? At least in private lobbies.
>>
Because I don't want to pay to play online. Might just buy karters 2 and stick to time trials on ctr
>>
>>1973974
Why not do time trials on Karters too?
>>
is there a /v/ or /vm/ The karts 2 clan? Can someone make it? and since the discussion ITT is both about CTR and TK2, maybe the OP can bake the next thread as both ctr and tk2??? plzz? :)
i'm playing for the next few hours if any anons want to join just reply
>>
>>1975248
>is there a /v/ or /vm/ The karts 2 clan?
You can do that? huh, I'll make one then.
Regarding the thread, I made it with the intention of playing CTR but then I found out Karters exists, I was gonna include it after this thread reached bump limit, so let's keep posting so that happens faster :V

I'll join in if you wanna play.
>>
>>1975259
>I was gonna include it after this thread reached bump limit
Great!
>I'll join in if you wanna play.
yes plz because there is literally no one playing multiplayer right now

I'll make a lobby, 1 second, my game takes a lot to load because my PC is old and I also have a shitton of mods lol.

I see there's a /v/ thread that could populate our lobby, I'll post the room code there as well.

Yeah I don't have too many characters, since the game kinda freezes on boot for me I try to minimize that by not having so many mods that arent' tracks installed, lemme know which one it is and I'll go grab it.

Nice, so the room doesn't die if the host leaves, that's a nice feature. Yeah I'll make the clan when we are done playing, which is probably in a couple more races, it's 12am over here and I've got to work.
