>What is Tabletop Sim
TTS is a physics sandbox game meant to be used to play board games online, you can find almost any board game for free in the Steam Workshop, or even create your own!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/286160/Tabletop_Simulator/

Controls are mostly straightforward and intuitive, but there's always little tips and tricks to learn, more info can be found at https://kb.tabletopsimulator.com/

>How do I join?
That's easy, you click on "Join" in the main menu, search for the lobby name and password that's been posted, and done!

>How do I host?
Click on "Create", and that's basically it. You can find free games in the workshop here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/286160/workshop/

>>
>>1902004
It was surprisingly coherent.
I would have liked to see more ways of commanders exerting control over their team, and maybe a combat rework, since I'm not liking how you can just juice up one player and then alternate to always get 1st place.
Other than that, considering the game was never meant for this type of mode, it was pretty good.

You should see the original 1997 components, all stored in a VHS box, sovl.

Indeed it was pretty interesting, though the other players didn't agree. You want to connect servers and computers together using your own cables, and each tile has a secret number between 2 and 4 that dictates how many actions you get to perform, you don't know which number is down there since it's forbidden to check until you already decided to place it though, and sometimes you want to do less or more actions, but must do all actions it tells you to (place cables, take tiles, or get more cables).

At first it didn't feel like anything special, it is enjoyable to place the tiles and make connections but it felt like there wasn't much rhyme or reason to it aside from taking the big scoring tiles and connecting them. That was until we ran out of servers and/or computers to connect to; then it clicked. So the game ends if only one player has tiles left ala Bus, or one of the market piles run out of tiles, and if you don't have tiles to play you are basically out of the game, BUT, each tile you hold is worth -1 point at the end and you can only place a single one a turn, but having tiles give you actions and scoring possibilities, so it's a cool balance you must maintain, especially since if you already took all your 18 cables and can't really place new ones to "stall", you must keep taking tiles. So it's all about knowing when to quit or end the game yourself while you balance tile grabbing and scoring opportunities.

It's not ultra deep and complex but it's a cool filler that requires you to use your nogging in good Splotter fashion. I reckon the new art design makes it a bit more attractive to people as well.

Considering Cannes iterates from Web, it's very similar yet very different. Cannes is of course a better but longer game because of the extra added mechanics that enrich it. Web is a distilled simpler and quicker version without resource conversion.

I should work on importing Cannes so I can host it sometime, forgot it wasn't on the workshop

I really dislike the new card design, it's very sterile. The old one has so much soul embedded into it. I'm very interested in the Cristiana Era cards though.

The rest of the rule changes I'm also intrigued by, some I like, some I don't. I can implement them in the OG version when I play it again with my irl experienced friends to discuss how different they make the game.

I've played it at 4, 3 and 2
The only real difference between 3 and 4 is that there's an extra smuggler at 4
At 2 the first player (which switches at every round) picks one region dice to increase by one which is one more strategic choice to make
In summary it's playable at all player counts, but if what you actually meant was "yes it's playable but there are better games to play at <insert player count>" then I'd agree

sorting them by max player count doesn't sound like a smart idea considering the max player count is usually the worst or one of the worst player counts for any given game, should sort by "best at <player count>" if anything

"Best at" is just "BGG vibes" who don't take into account the balance at all because "idk bro I played it with my friends while drinking and smoking and we had a good time, this 2-player card game totally works at 5 players", at least player count is publisher recommended.
>>
>>1924302
>at least player count is publisher recommended
Careful with that. More often than not, publishers increase/decrease the "playable" player counts just so they can reach a bigger market share. Hansa Teutonica used to be sold as a *2* to 5 player game.
>>
>>1924387
And the good folks at Lookout Games would have you believe that Caverna can be played at 7.
>>
>>1924302
???
literally never seen a "best at" that's outside of the player count that the game itself allows, it's almost always a smaller range than what it says
just to give a couple examples using games that get hosted here, I do not recommend GWT at more than 3 players (though to be honest i also don't recommend the expa as it makes the game way too loose and adds unnecessary bloat), same for Grand Austria Hotel, same for Ark Nova, or FCM with more than 4. I always look at the number of players we currently have before deciding on what to play, and it's rarely the max number

According to BGG and that anon above, this should only be played with 2 people.

I dont think I ever mentioned BGG though
For me GAH is best at 2 or 3, if you have to use data from BGG then i guess you could use "recommended" instead of "best at", either of them is still better than just using max anyways, GAH at 4 is a waste of time

Just bought this game a couple of weeks ago, but haven't found a group to play anything on it just yet.
Do you know of groups that gather regularly to play something? Is this thread lively enough to organize some games every weekend or something like that?

Always depends on the timezone
that or you could just join the tts discord called "tts club" (it has nothing to do with this thread though)

Gotcha. I'm partial to card games, so I was pretty hyped to see someone hosted Myths and Legends at some point, but I'm also fine with learning about some unusual (for me) board games like the Bloodborne one or whatever LobCorp's one will be.
I was expecting this thread to have one of those relay dynamics of playing a new game every week or something like that in the OP, but if there's nothing like that, I'm just gonna lurk and wait until someone hosts something to join in.

It's much simpler than that, one person will host a game they want to play, people join, get taught if they don't know it, then play.
Some hosts like to host several new games every time, some others prefer to play just a couple games a lot before moving on, and others will find their niche game and host basically only it. No real etiquette or anything aside from being a cool dude.
>>
>>1924715
The artwork of those cards was the real pull for me. The fact there was a game attached to them was a nice bonus.
They were also dirt cheap, so it was a win in every front.

Anyway, I hope I can catch a game of anything at some point, or I might host one myself if not.
It's cool to see a place like this still existing in here, even if I had to thoroughly search for it in every board.

Pretty good picks anon. I would say only Heat there would need a bit of zooming in and out because of the relative size of the components.

Personally, I don't really mind zooming in and out, and moving all around the virtual space (everybody should really crank the movement speed for WASD camera movement and the camera spin rate up for optimal super fast traversing), but of course after 6000 hours one gets used to it.

Hmm, I could host Meikyuu Conquest since I have it open (had to fix a button). Three minimum, about 40-60 minutes. Cards, dice, conquer dungeons and develop your town to 10 stars before your opponents, etc. I haven't actually played it yet though so I'd be reading the rulebook alongside everyone else.

That's a very nice sentiment to have but most hosts are kind of hosting on a whim, mainly because when they would ask in advance if people were up to play, nobody would reply (yet they would join at the moment of host) so people adapted to this method lately.

I got an itch for Merchants & Marauders and could host it in about 5-6 hours of we can gather 3 or 4 people, how about it?

Next Week: I am going to host Railways of the Lost Atlas, either on Thursday or Friday, at 16:00 GMT. It's a game about trains, the economy, and investing into the success of your opponents.
There isn't a good "how to play" video for it but the rules are pretty simple and the rulebook can be found on BoardGameGeek, sadly I can't upload .pdf files here cause if i could i would, it's really not a hard read at all and has many illustrations.

it's only like 17 pages of text, plus intros plus images, but if you're gonna be a baby here's a tl;dr:
>each cycle you'll go through up to four rounds
>>a Stock Round is when people buy or sell stocks in companies, or launch new Minor Companies and become their President.
>>an Operating Round is when Presidents of companies and corporations operate the companies, laying out more tracks or upgrading one old track, running trains, and deciding wether to withold the payments and keep all the profits in the company, or to pay out to shareholders and potentially increase stock price.
>>There's two Operating Rounds per cycle, so i'll take this space to note an important feature: At the end of each Operating Round, a company must have at least one train. If they don't have one, they must buy one. If they can't afford one, the President uses his pocket change to help the company buy one, selling shares to fundraise if needed. You can run out of shares and go bankrupt and get eliminated from the game, so try to plan on not doing that.
>>a Merger Round only happens in the midgame, after the first 3-Train is bought. Here, the president(s) of two companies might agree to merge them into a Corporation, that inherits the unique abilities, stock locations, trains and treasury, and home hubs, from the merged companies. The Corporation also gains two extra Hub Tokens that they can place in the operating rounds.
you go for 4 Cycles in a short game, and 6 in the long game, and whoever has the most money (total of cash and held stock value) wins. It's a simple game, really, but reading the rules will open you up to the nuances of the system and give you a few ideas on how to best exploit those nuances.

eh to be fair 18XX are more stock market autism, as the train part is pretty simple.
now, if there was a Leaving Earth or High Frontier style train game, simulating every wagon in the train, every engine failure possible, every need for coal and lubricant and provisions for crew and provisions for passengers, every stretch of rails needs a diceroll for a derailment check, now that would be Train autism game.
>>
>>1941047
Doesn't Campaign for North Africa stimulate some supply lines by train?
>>
>>1941057
no, the rulebook clearly states (twice) that the train line in CNA is a decorative historical piece, as even though it was used in the war, it's effect on the North African Front depicted in the game is minimal, and most of it is not on the map anyway. and even then it won't be train autism, it would be everything autism, because it's fucking Campaign for North Africa, it's designed to take forever and be as obtuse as possible.

speaking of, anybody interested in the new game "Campaign for the Solar System: The Space war 2178-9999"? i havent played it yet but the rules for orbital maneuvers look pretty good

It's really cool, basically a escape/mystery room in board game form, most of the puzzles are through numbered cards and other components, but you also need an app to play it as some puzzles and solutions require you to type in a code or do a minigame similar to a Layton game.

It's the classic Dokapon bullshit in 3D I guess, can really make you mad how hard the game wants you to suffer but that keeps everybody around the same level. the Defense stat is completely useless though and the game doesn't explain you about most things, but I like that because it makes you explore and try things yourself.
>>
>>1956117

What would be even better than some awkward roundabout way of picking up the entire deck and dropping a card would be a simple hotkey to just draw from the bottom thoughbeit. Too bad that Unreal TTS clone is stillborn, TTS is old and busted but it's never going to be replaced anytime soon.
>>
>>1956784
I just flip the deck, draw, flip it back and shuffle (if it's a game where there's no draw deck manipulation mechanics)

After you some game mechanics learning new games is much easier because you can extrapolate the knowledge. To remember rules of a game you haven't played in a while the theme helps to rationalize the ideas so a short summary will put you back to sleep.

Or autism, that could be it too.

Try 10, the main host favorites
The list is useless and 90% of games there some anon loaded the game once in a lobby and posted on the thread (did not even play it).
>>
>>1962479
You only need to know a few rules to play most games, it's like videogames, every FPS is similar enough with one or two differences, every platformer is similar enough with one or two differences, same here, most games play in turns, most games bundle a bunch of turns into a round, most games let you do a limited number of things per turn, and so on. Sometimes there's a simultaneous play component, sometimes there's an auction, sometimes you can share spaces other times you can't, sometimes you can use other players' stuff other times you can't, and so on.
But as the other anon said, you usually learn a few games you like and know how to teach them to others so they can play it with you.

Disagree, the list actually misrepresents the actual culture and the games played here.
Some MTG fag isn't going to find his public here and MTG is listed, along with other TCGs. Same with wargamers.

They could if they hosted. Those games just aren't really played as-is because they're 2P and most hosters just wanting to play whatever with whomever shows up. Doesn't mean there aren't people here who play those kinds of games.

There's a digital implementation of Risk on PC and smartphones (cross platform play) with a massive playerbase. It automates the dice rolls so the game doesn't take forever and that's everyone's biggest issue with Risk.

After you do play Risk try a better game like Stronghold if you're 2 players, or something like Smallworlds or Kemet if you are more.
