I will check it out when it's on a steep sale. The first game had the fast gameplay I was looking for, but the maps (especially the PvP maps) were inexplicably small; you could dash from one edge to the other in three seconds. The story was also a complete mess. Fun if you liked Armored Core 4 and want more of that specifically, but moreso a cheap imitation.

In Mercenaries, are there any mods that let heavier mechs show up in easier missions as bosses and the like? I think it would be neat to see a little bit more variety in the early game, especially if you could salvage a heavier mech and have a composition that isn't just four mechs of roughly the same tonnage.

I checked Nexus and didn't see any mods like that, but I may have missed one. Thankfully you start seeing heavies pretty early, and an early set of Swaybacks (the 8ML Hunches) is enough to demolish the entire game for obvious reasons. Nothing beats the good old Medium Laser.

The biggest problem with "competitive" MechWarrior is that unless you design maps to never have any kind of waist-high cover, well over half the damn Mechs are guaranteed to be shit from their geometry alone. The ideal Mech design is too specific.

I mean the Cataphract is just badly designed for example. Yeah, "frankenmech" and all, but that's no excuse for every main weapon being that low while the mech is that tall, even in universe. One of the main issue also comes from MWO, and the MW games being pure mech vs mech combat, having MGs or flamers makes a lot more sense when you can expect infantry in a treeline. And you don't actually struggle to find rare tech and ammo.

The entire problem comes from trying to take a tabletop ruleset and copy it 1:1 into a "sim". It's just insane. The tabletop rules were already an extrapolation of how things should work in the fluff, like an AC20 deleting a light mech in one hit, should mean it deals more damage point than it's armor and structure combined, but that's not how it works "irl". Spreading damage only works because your armor has healthbars instead of penetration values and fatigue, so an armor with 1 HP takes 1 DMG just as well as armor with 100 HP. And both can be damaged by firing the same 1 DMG weapon at it.

So either they should remove precision aiming to avoid rolling sixes all the time or rework the armor and weapon mechanics to work more in line with the real world.

Finally finished my 400 Loot Bags and shitmech unlocks... turns out the final two unlocks are actually good? You can get two meta hero Assaults no proble-- Sovereign, Gausszilla, Aksum, Clan Bullshark, Fafnir, whatever. Feels... weird. Guess the game really is about to die if they're giving away the actual Pay2Win Mechs as an event bonus.
