so I just heard about the Adventure Mode side project. I'm really excited for that. Something a little more Minecraft-y on the current engine would result in damn near unlimited resources for VS and provide a nice baseline for modding purposes. Probably see some major improvements to the API too.

Because those are all hats tyrone wears, for presumably more than one project now. More than that, he refuses to run his studio sensibly and appoint a small group of people to determine what features are important for the product, and instead let's "everyone" have a say. That works when you're four people, not 20. He complained about having to split team meetings into two group that met every other week because there were "too many voices in the call". If this was a normal studio that was actually organized reasonably, then 3 projects would be fine, but since he's apparently too afraid to act like a boss and force his (paid) employees to meet deadlines and follow orders, we're stuck getting fish particles and corrupted saves every 9 months.

I don’t like unrealistic builds (like massive towers of windmills), so I was thinking of putting up two or three windmills that could power things like the hammer or whatever else I can automate in a forge I want to build nearby. it depends on the spawning mechanics for each ore, but if you get any reading for hematite specifically, track it until you get into the highest local concentration of readings and dig down. it'll very likely be in a large pancake there. most ores occur in pancakes like that so they're relatively easy to find by digging down, but some, like cassiterite, are scattered nodules that are horrible to find without a short range propick.

I've only occasionally played on OG, but I've lurked these threads for a few years and would have fun turning everyone's screenshots/art and articles/notes/memes into a document if I can get people to submit material; if Dove writes out anything in preparation for the lore vid I could include that too.

It wouldn't be anything super fancy, but you can print this sort of thing on-demand for relatively cheap (as in you don't order in bulk, anybody can just order a single copy). There have been lots of projects on /lit/ that did that, and I cut my teeth making one before (https://the-best-of-amp.github.io).

The update, yeah it's pretty much over for sahara. I tried everything, I hired people to help, I couldn't get the world to run. I still have some files for it so maybe one day.
In the meantime, a stronger backup from right before sahara is being worked on. I could host it on one of my own computers however I prefer online deciated hosts. Problem is, even the older OG saves are massive. I managed to get a file uploaded in a zip but am having trouble unzipping it.
I'll make sure to do videos covering the history.

Actually looking forward to seeing what new settlements pop up. Sahara was big and had a lot of impressive builds, but it was also really flat and spread out. It was why the slums were my favorite part, they actually felt dense and urban, whereas the rest of the city could almost feel like zoned burbs.

Not faulting any saharan of course; it was a city with resources and space. People were able to spread out, so they did.

Compare that to a place like borea. Although it was denser, it's layout was a direct reflection of it's isolation and resource scarcity. Located on the narrow banks of a frozen lake, tucked against icy cliffs, and completely covered in snow, there wasn't a lot of easily workable space to begin with. Farms were located in underground pits, insulated by layers of glass to prolong the brief growing season. A warehouse sat at the center of town, the nucleus around which priority buildings, such as a smithy and steelworks, were arranged. Marching around in -50c weather is anything but enjoyable, so nothing was really more than a half-minute away. You could attribute this urban planning to it's lower population, but given the premium on imports I'd hazard that this communal valence was a necessary adaption to the harsh polar environment.

But I suppose we'll see, won't we?

I fully disagree. It discourages thoughtless exploration. It makes exploration more realistic. You have to follow landmarks, coastlines, rivers, mountains. We'll get the chance to make our own drawn maps, make travel like how it was during medieval time. No maps, just names of the places you have to go to and from there to the next until you're where you want to.
I think nomap will be amazing.

Dove here with good news. I managed to restore OG. I'm still tweaking some stuff an making sure it will run without crashes. I'll work on mods.
So we will continue going forward on OG as per popular demand. I am working late today, expect everything to be up and running by sunday at the latest. I did connect and I am on the OG world.
Any suggestions for non-game breaking mods or world settings are appreciated.
Reply to this post with some mod or world ideas to make it easier for me to see.

nick, waterworld server is having some issues. the lathe mod is completely broken. some others might be too, the real tree thing i think might be fucked as well. siph and i both had weird durability hits to tools, like losing 50% dura from 1 block and i had some to my armor. couple hits from a drigger dropped a steel landsknecht hat to half dura

Honestly, It mostly failed due to weird wgen settings. The main settlement (Mensfield, picrel) was walled and gated as byz and sahara were, and there were few tiny settlements scattered nearby. In my humble opinion, nomap discourages larger collaboration and exploration projects such as the HI 1 & 2, and only adds tedium to the game in practice. From my experience with it, it gets very stale and frustrating after a few weeks, but people may have better luck with better preparation and wgen settings. We will spawn at an ocean near /byz/. Hyperborea can be repopulated on the byz network or byz can be repopulated or you can do your own thing or try and return to monestary or raid old og towns for old loot.

I think I'm still interested in mods that allow for og's longevity. I do want to test rivers on the world gen since I haven't gotten around to it. Currently I have 3 backups of OG on my pc that work so I am just testing in SP before I add to the server and making sure shit can uninstall without issue. You can use either Something Unique Hosting or Bisect. I think SU is cheaper but doesn't give you unlimited storage, whereas bisect is a little more but has no cap. Both use similar hardware so it's basically just a preference thing. For what you're doing I'd just use SU.

millwright is silly because the upgraded sails spin WAY faster than the wind would be pushing them, like it just looks weird having an 8 sail mill rotating like its in a hurricane all of the time (even in low wind).
I wouldn't mind more powerful sails if instead of being faster they just had more torque, forcing you to get speed through gear ratios like you do with vanilla mills,

Yeah. One thing I have heard a lot growing up is to make a decision.
OG is 6 years old and tyron is a retard who does not care about longevity like he used to.
Still have multiple OG backups I will make public. In my two weeks off I will do detailed videos of our 6 years of history on the vm vintage story youtube.
I think I will work on setting up a world tonight. It will likely be ready tonight or tomorrow morning.
If we do it more fresh, the world will be more stable, run very smooth, give new players an opportunity to become a part of the new history, and allow me to make more frequent hard backups (not taking a literal day or two to backup).
I am thinking of keeping it a continent map. Xskills does not work on og anymore but it would work on a new server.
We will have a primary spawn island in a temperate zone. In spawn I will place two, one-way tps. One to the far north for a hyperborean nation. One to the tropics. Players for the first few weeks will get to pick where they will want to start. Hopefully we will see player-drawn maps, roads, and unique civilizations form and eventually connect. I will keep og culture alive, hermes initiative, bse/hyperborea, dodgerock, olympic games, maybe a shrine to old things like posh or booba.

I have learned a lot from running og. With a smaller size, i’ll return to weekly backups and do whatever I can to preserve the builds of anon. The only thing I can think of is cheesing story dungeons or carrying infinite spears. Not much but it is technically something. Mounts having unlimited storage avoids both problems.

Base camp is half the distance from spawn as sahara was. It's basically filter distance. Even 10k is light work to most vm players. I'm sure there will be a road in the works in less than a week from basecamp to spawn.

The twin tps are part of what I think might make this more unique. Having people start civs in the tropics/far north then eventually connecting them to spawn is going to be very fun I think and make for unique culture. Like with sahara connecting to hyperborea. Give it time I think.

I want to set up a scorched earth/desert world but I'm not sure how to handle basic stuff like reeds/wood/clay. I'm willing to go so far as to try modding to get it to work but what are some good, balanced approaches to make a barren wasteland viable but still different from a normal playthrough? Just spawning in a bunch of leafy branches and clay would work, but then it wouldn't be all that much different from a normal world.

Right now I'm leaning towards exploiting ruins for essential materials. Better Ruins alone might be enough to make it work. Anyone have any ideas?
