Lotro is having that giveaway they're doing every few years again. From what I understand it's basically a bunch of mini-expansions.I only played it briefly myself years and years ago, and always was late to grab these. So if anyone was interested in giving it a shot, now's the time.
>>1975756i really like this game but never got to the end. i'm at level 121 now, at this rate i might reach the end and hit level cap in about 2 years
>>1975756Are they doing it for DDO too?
>>1977219If you really want to grind some level, get on during a festival event and do all the quests every day, you can easily get half a level every day, more if you want to deliver booze across the continent.I actually have more fun trying to go around shit, it's crazy when even the fucking deer see you from max distance and are trying to kill you, but fuck riders. It's all about that stable masters map baybee.
>play soulless, poorly maintained pay2win slopmiss me with that. echoes of angmar exists
I only play it f2p, it's more fun if you can't instant travel everywhere.
will try it out
fyi apparently the code THANKYOU2025 is also currently active, use it if you haven't yet
Spent a lot of money on this game years ago, all my purchases were ''lost'' when the game moved ownership, so I look to see what this ancient game's sub looks like and it's 15 fucking bucks a month lol.lmao.You gotta be fucking kidding me.
>>1985085don't let the man get you down, play it f2pbut see if you can get any of your characters back too
>>1975756>From what I understand it's basically a bunch of mini-expansions.LOTRO allows F2P players to access content until Riders of Rohan (3rd expansion). With this content you get everything before Corsairs of Umbar.
>>1975756I binged the fuck out of this game a few years ago. Pretty much 100%ed every achievement/milestone that was soloable. Huge ass game, very fun, and I enjoyed doing all the achievements to earn lotro points and buy content from the shop.
>>1985808>I binged the fuck out of this game a few years ago. Pretty much 100%ed every achievement/milestone that was soloable.Guess what, now they've made more content for you to waste your time on!And LP-maxxing can be fun.
>>1985085Yeah, dunno if it's related, but I couldn't find my old character on any of the servers and apparently they closed down 32-bit servers and opened 64-bit ones. You had to transfer your characters before end of August or something. I've read that they're going to open transfers again at a later date.Weird technical stuff.>>1984992It works, thanks.I made an elf and their zone seems kind of empty compared to human. Or at least I'm getting an impression human zone was more packed and easier to find stuff to do.Just need to find time play this now and maybe move on to better locations.
>>1986221If you just started, all new chars go through a starter zone which is an instance of just part of the big world. There aren't going to be a lot of other players there because it's only new chars. Once you finish all the quests in there it lets you out.>they closed down 32-bit serversIf you were on a previously active 32-bit server, this month is probably the worst time to start playing again. They had free moves set up from those servers but that ended last month.I think they're about to create some better way to allow migrations from dead servers, but it's not ready yet and you will have to go through the customer support process. I can't help you there.
>>1986445I've only played until like level 15-20, so it's no biggie.>all new chars go through a starter zone which is an instanceI chose the tutorial that has you go through the whole war with Sauron shenanigans flashback. I know practically nothing about the lore and story besides watching movies when they came out.Pretty sure I'm out in the real world now, though I just don't have time to play right now.
>>1987681That's just for high elves. Every race gets their own starting instance before it dumps you off in the prologue areas - well, assuming you chose the Shadows of Angmar start. Beyond the Shadow dumps you off immediately in swanfleet and everyone has the same starting instance.
Dunlending fuckin' shits. Betray me and ship me off to Isengard to slave for Uruk's and be interrogated by Saruman. It honestly feels great to go back to Tel Methedras after you escape and slaughter a bunch of them.
>>1991086As far as Uruk-hai go, the lackey that Morflak assigns to watch you is actually a somewhat decent sort.
>>1991086Tal. not Tel.
Fuckin' Isengard.
Free transfers from dark worlds (the older 32bit servers) to new worlds are open.
how is this game for someone that doesnt care about mmos or lotr?
>>2003497why should it be?why is everything all about you?
>>1975756if the game scaled properly to higher resolutions I'd play it.
>>2008106It's not great at 1080p from couch distance, but at least you can make the quest dialog text bigger. And then it doesn't remember, so you have to set it every time you log in.But there's still some text that you can't make bigger, and even worse they do that purple-on-black shit with serif fonts and you can't read any of it unless you put your nose to the screen. There's outlines on the text, but it's too thin for serif fonts, and black outlines don't help with dark text. It's not just about high resolution, it also needs better text contrast.
and those tiny fucking UI buttons, yeah, they don't get any bigger, even when you can make the window bigger, it's bad enough at 1080p, it's gotta be awful on a 4K monitor
>>2003470Thanks for the heads up, got back my level 20 Minstrel back from 2018. Just in case.Look at this gamer.
>>2010338>expwow, typical ugly gear, you need to set up a cosmetic layout just to protect your own eyes, even f2p gets two slots of that
I liked the dwimorburg. wish they kept the more monstrous appearance for the dimholt oathbreakers rather than just 'blue dunlendings' they used ever since enedwaith.
>>2013370ghost banners are always a nice touch. Also - I love the exploration music for gondorhttps://youtu.be/CM-KqPj_6JE?si=fYLlqCaRappsG2qLYes, my favorite game OST is Arcanum.
Pelargir was neat
>>2016720First time I tried the epic battle system was Helm's Dike, but I was retarded and couldn't figure anything out and just did the story mission versions of the stages of Helm's Deep instead. It clicked in the retaking of Pelargir though.
>>1975756>>1978697cool, they're actually having the equivalent promotion in DDO too!>https://www.ddo.com/news/ddo-free-thankyou-2025
One of the biggest sins I still feel that the movies did was removing Aragorn's trip across Gondor gathering up the remaining troops and cutting out Prince Imrahil.
I'm rather enjoying piecing together the exact timing of the gondor regions as you progress along the dawnless day. By the time you reach ithilien, it's pretty much the point where Faramir's ordered retaking of osgiliath fails, but the Morgul host hasn't advanced yet into the Pelennor as they're still building siege weapons/building a span over the grand causeway.
>>2020464Osgiliath is fuckin' huge.
>>2018244Cool, I don't really have time for mmos these days, but I liked DDO.
>>2022058it's pretty much the best implemented AD&D ruleset game out thereand not gaylorded to all hell and back, yet
I haven't been in Minas Tirith since they did the wedding of aragorn and arwen event and I forgot just how obscenely huge it is.
>>2026397
>>1985085I'll never understand complaining about subscriptions of this price range if you're going to actually put time into the game. I'm definitely poorer than you are and $15 a month is nothing.

>>2003497>how is this game for someone that doesnt care about mmos or lotr?So why would you want to play this, no memes?
>>2026397huge AND three different versions of it, it's nuts
>>1975756There was a 4chinz guild on ddo and this iirc?
>>1975756>main warden>play to the end of the moria quest line>quit for 3-4 years? maybe more>pick the game back up again>trying to remember how the fucking gambits work>mfwI just picked a bunch of blue line traits and use the self-heal rotation then an AoE rotation, it's getting me through the landscape content at least. Still I'm seriously thinking it'd be easier to just start over with a burglar or something
>>2028742I know this feeling. That's why I'm currently much further on my captain.Unrelated - but I made my own personal kinship for my characters. Now I just gotta wait for the next 2-3 months or so until my lifespan rank is high enough to where I can buy picrel. The hobbit houses are nice, but I've got elves and the name I came up with is sindarin for 'People of the Singing Birds.' I don't think they'd fit in on the edge of the southfarthing.
>>2028784I'm also currently hanging out in Taur Druadan with my main man Ghan-Buri-Ghan.I had to tickle a goat as part of a wose wedding ceremony.
>>2028784oh mannow you're making me want to revisit my trusty Dwarven Guardian Main
>>2029018huhWTF's a Mariner??after all these years another new class!
>>2029026came with the first umbar expansion. I like it, it's fun. The extreme rarity of daggers once you get out of moria is an annoyance though since the only weapons you use is sword and dagger dual wielding.
>tfw going around talking to all the various thanes and reeves you met through out Rohan while looking for Theoden in Taur DruadanI'm legit getting pretty pumped for the charge of the rohirrim and the battle of the pelennor.
>>2028784sounds comfy! I've got a high elf but I bought one of the dwarf houses because I like the aesthetic better. I'm roleplaying that my guy was one of the Noldor who got along well with Dwarves back in the daySome of the Warden stuff is coming back to me a little. Got to the end of the south Mirkwood quest line anyway. Only to find out I could have been questing in Enedwaith instead, a zone that isn't hours and hours of grey dreary forest! Oh well, on to Dunland now
>>2029096oh, so you basically have to craft your own daggersgood to know
>>2030279Well, it's not really any different in that regard since by the time you get up to around supreme you're at the mercy of scroll drops for recipes. It's more you have to be slightly more aware of what's on offer at faction rep vendors. Normally you can kinda ignore them, but especially in rohan I had to keep an eye on what they had because it was the only way I was getting a dagger once I had finished up Mirkwood and got one of sigileth's daggers.
heading to adagim in december but im bored of harad desu, we need to go back to mordor and finish off all the stuff they left there
It's fucking go time.
>>2033369
>>2033374I think the whole thing took like... 2-3 hours to play through and I didn't even do stuff like the Pelennor battlefield instance where you kill the Haradrim king with Theoden.
>>2033380Some of these aftermath quests. yeesh. Gotta walk along the northern stretch of the wall gathering up the various body parts the orcs catapulted up there. Taking the lord of the blackroot vale around to try and help identify the bodies of his two sons because they got trampled by mumakil.
>>2033713They knew what they were doing. It seriously feels really good to see Minas Tirith in the light of dawn after spending so much time with the lighting set to that of the dawnless day.
Minas Morgul looks cool.
I used to play this game back in 2010-2011 and in glad to see it's still alive. Amazed to see how huge it has become. I might actually come back after an almost 15 years long hiatus lmao
'bout to march off to the dagorlad in style.
Just redownloaded lotro, gonna create a black female elf and troll around hehe
Yup. Those are black gates, all right.>>2035637I've seen a couple of those (only like 2). Took all my willpower to not make the obvious 'I've heard of dark elves, but this is ridiculous' joke to their face.
>>2035680The fun part is that I know a dwarf in Erebor who will just throw you to the other side of those gates. If you're too young you'll probably get ripped to shreds in an instant, but sometimes you really can just walk into Mordor.
>>2035761I think there's also a death wall effect that is locked behind the epic questline much like the guard stones in Angmar
>>2035772Yes, and you can totally ignore it with the Erebor dwarf teleport.
Is there any free way to get the riding skill? Or do I need to buy it off the store?
>>2035637gona kill me a couple of dozen "Southerners" just in your honor
>>2035951Always check the wikihttps://lotro-wiki.com/index.php?title=Riding
So they're pretending rohan doesn't exist in the Angmar server, 1 month for each lvl cap with +50% exp.Hope this is enough to keep the server alive, I'm really enjoying the lvl 75 cap right now.
>>2036797>So they're pretending rohan doesn't exist in the Angmar server,I haven't gotten to this yet, is it really that bad?
>>2036797I don't know if it's pretending it doesn't exist. I mean, Rohan is A LOT of content to go through packed into 75-95. It's one thing to have the whole shebang being 2 expansions with several filler sections when it was released and that was that, it's another thing when you're trying to have this curated scheduled progression.
>reading the book/watching the movie and visiting the locations in the game after reading or seeing themquinoa
So the promotion that they're running gives you quest content from a bunch of expansions for free? I'm considering trying this game for the first time just to casually experience the levelling, is this the sort of game you can just play and get by or do you need to use external wikis or guides to understand the systems and zone progression and whatever for casual play?
You better hurry, it's almost over.
>>2038840pretty much. the current f2p section is pretty much everything from base game up through helms deep (basically lvls 1-95). I don't think it includes the Before the Shadow xpac which is an alternate levelling path for the first 30ish levels. The promo code unlocks essentially everything else aside from the two umbar expansions and like, a raid pack and some side mission stuff.I'm pretty sure it's ending on the 3rd.
something i've been seeing more and more of lately - people who are making river hobbits as short as possible (they get a height slider for some reason). It's actually rather cute.
yo so i started playing yesterday and redeemed both THANKYOU2025 and EXPLOREOURWORLD couposn, can i delete my character and still have these items or do i lose them forever? do they only work for one character?
>>2038995Even on F2P, event quests are always at your current level, so it's not hard to cap eventually. But it's sure easier when you've done the "lots of less old expansions" code.>>2039883Those codes are once per account (and so is the mithril), but I wouldn't delete your only character with the stuff until it's been mailed over to another character.
>>2039991oh i have to mail them to another character? that good to know.i made a hobbit lore-master named Aryanwise, thought it be funny to make a hobbit that larps as an elf
How much is it to unlock the Brawler class? Would it take long for a new player to earn enough of the store currency via deeds or whatever to purchase it? I like the idea of playing a heavy armour punching guy, seems like it was a post-launch expansion class though.
>>2040019It's a standard belt and suspenders in any mmo, if you're going to reroll a character, put the inventory somewhere safe first because you should expect it to be nuked.
>>2040047Very new, it was added in 2021. While Mariner is 2023, and before them Warden was added waaay back in 2010 and Rune-Keeper in 2008 before that.As for your question, it's 1,000 points. Which is more or less $20ish. You can do that even at low levels, but it will be a bit of a grind. The link below goes into detail, but the biggest thing is you can get those points on your account from multiple characters.https://lotro-wiki.com/wiki/Acquiring_LOTRO_Points_from_Deeds
I will add - even if it is anathema to most: It's totally worth it to get at least 1 month of VIP. Even after your VIP time runs out any character you logged in on during that time will be considered 'premium' and you'll have access to swift travel and the extra storage bags. But honestly - the perks are really useful. You can access the mailbox straight from the notification, you get a little item that lets you do town services while out exploring (vendor/repair, access storage vaults and AH).
Got a kin hall on Orcrist with the premium ingredient crates if anyone wants to join
I just started playing this for the first time, does anyone else play with controller mapping?I won't be using it for raids or stuff with other players but it would be nice to use a controller for just basic walking around and leveling.
>>2045068this is OLD old schoolsome shitty console controller is virtually useless herethese games are the reason we got keypads and 10 button mouses
>>2045221Yeah I know I just wish I could play in a reclined posture
>>2045068If you play hunter or champion I believe it's possible, but any harder content will be off the table.
>>2045332wireless keyboard in lap, cutting board on couch arm (or table to the side) as a mouse pad, set mouse wheel left/right tilt to jump and autorunbut still not as comfy as ffxi (which is built for controller, and hostile to mouse use)
>>2047645I guess I'll just hold off on playing until I get a proper desktop set up. Right now I have a completely subhuman apartment with a mattress on the floor and computer on the floor next to it. So not great for PC gaming without controller.
Noice the codes still work
Didn't know people still played this
>>2055948I'm off and on, I will never hit max level and I've "played" it for over a decadeMost of the time I actually played it was only in Eriador
How many people actually play this game?
>>2057450A few thousand at least. World chat's always well populated if you want to shoot the shit and getting pubs together is usually pretty painless.Average pubbies are usually pretty good too since the game's so old.
>>2058119I usually mute world chat immediately in online games, but for some reason this one is mostly tolerable. Maybe because the community skews a little older.
>>2060996Only MMO I've played where I'm not shocked if someone turns out to be in their sixties.
>>2060996If WC ever starts getting out of hand, just mention bacon, that should start enough other players talking about bacon to drown out the faggotry.
I really want go give the game a try but the lack of UI scaling filtered me. I am playing on a 4K monitor and the UI is incredibly tiny and no lossless scaling on linux for a workaround.
>>2061441Can your video card take a second monitor? Maybe you can get a 1080 monitor and play it on that. I wouldn't play it on anything higher resolution though, at 1080 it's already at the limit for some UI things that you can't adjust.
>>2061444I think i will just wait for them to support modern resolutions. Surely they understand that this is filtering a lot of potential customers? And that it's only going to get worse and worse as the average resolution increases. Also hoping they can fix the lag.. Even a full server has a fairly low population cap and there must be something deeply wrong with their server software for it to not be able to handle that on modern hardware.
>lagDon't know why, but I've got genuine nostalgia for the on-map Nazgul spawns. it'd been literal years since I'd played a slideshow.
>>2026414$15 a month is not "nothing" it is $180 a year for something you do not need, nevermind all the time you spend in the game again for no real-world benefit at all.
>>2061471>Surely they understand that this is filtering a lot of potential customers? They do, but the code for the UI is, apparently, a mess that they can't allocate the resources to untangle. If you're waiting on them to fix it, you'll be waiting forever. Most people are content to just play at a lower resolution and upscale.
>>2061441>no lossless scaling on linuxIt doesn't work even though it's from steam? That sucks.
>>2061658What country are you from?
Is Echoes of Angmar enjoyable solo? I want to try LoTRO but don't really have anyone to play with
>>2065098If you want to play solo why not the official game? Assuming the code still works it's a shit ton of content and you can adjust the overworld difficulty to be more engaging.
>>2065924I don't enjoy powercreeped MMO, even on FFXI I only play classic private serversI'm also too poor to pay for video games
>>2066040Retail LOTRO is f2p until like 120.
>>2061433The constant not shutting up about bacon is one of the faggotry triggers to make me mute world for an hour or so. That and the people who do the faggoty ass chat emote spamming like it's fucking Gaia or some shit.
>>2066185>_<
I love LOTR but LOTRO is so fucking bad. The game's netcode was always janky, but the game's gotten so big that there's actual in-built engine lag at this point. Any time a server gets close to 2k players there's actual rubberbanding in towns. Unplayable mess, plus P2W
>>2066185Maybe this isn't for you. Maybe you should look into cowadoody, or maybe even some sportsball.
>>2067196I utterly hate MMOs and I only play this because somehow in TYOOL 2025 it's the only open-world Tolkien RPG (afaik). Luckily it's solo-able and Warden gameplay is at least engaging enough that I have fun running around just to see places from the books.I really wish there was like a... "Morrowind, but in Middle-earth" kind of game.
>>2068691>it's the only open-world Tolkien RPG (afaik)correctthe Amazon DEI abomination thankfully got canceled
>>2068691Just wait til you get to Gondor and every 6th NPC is full-on black skinned. Or the black hobbits they added a few years ago. Or the recent black Elves. The game was only faithful to Tolkien up to the Helm's Deep expansion.
>>2068691Also it's not the only Tolkien RPG. This one was actually pretty good and not a travesty of the lore like the Mordor ones. And at this point, more faithful than LOTRO
>>2067180Nah son, it's that *pounces on you* and rawr shit. The most egregious and obnoxious forms.
>>2065098i've gotten up to lvl 125 so far soloThe world seemed comfy up until i switched server because i had to, now open world chat is just ragebaiting, nagging, complaining etc
>>2086229>picked the server with populationeveryone knows the lower population servers are the comfiest
>>2086284The sub only ones are the best, even the newbies are invested enough not to act like twats most of the time.Speaking of which, I've a hankering to start from scratch and play it slow through the levels; does anyone know if Mordor's still well populated for SoA content?
what build would let me do high lvl content well at a low lvl? should i try be a tank
