What is DSOAL-GW1?
>When GW was released in 2005, the audio component of Microsoft’s DirectX API was something called DirectSound. DirectSound had a 3D audio component called DirectSound3D, or DS3D, that could pan and amplify/attenuate sound sources based on their position relative to the camera in the game’s 3D world. PC’s with a high-end Creative sound card also had access to EAX, an extension to DS3D with a suite of hardware DSP effects for occlusion, obstruction, reverb, echo, etc. Like most games of its era, GW’s audio system was designed around DirectSound and DS3D, and owners of high-end PCs could get the “definitive” audio experience with EAX.

Last thread died suddenly, looking at the catalog apparently 20 fucking threads got created on Friday and pushed us down from 8th page to nonexistence.

Anyway, UW next week 3 PM EST on Saturday. We'll do FoW prog run sometime in November, possible dungeon runs throughout Nov/Dec. Might even do a full HM DoA run with HM mallyx before year is over.

Our factions prog will likely start sometime in January to avoid scheduling conflicts of Nov/Dec. We'll talk about it more on next thread or after the holidays.

It's not a theme park exploration game and more of an RPG, but it does have beautiful vistas and more thoughtful world detail than GW2 imo.
Consider that there are no waypoints and no mounts. Whenever you leave a town you are out in the wild, and it is legit a trek to, for example, start from Ascalon, cross over the Shiverpeaks, and make your way to Lion's Arch.
There are entire zones and outposts that never are directly used in the campaign, and some that legit most players have never seen because they're so out of the way.
So I would say it's as much exploration as you make it. You can only do the campaign and jump out of Ascalon rather quickly, or you can trudge your way from Ascalon City all the way across the wall and be like "finally I made it to Piken Square", then you'll go out into the zone again, about to curse all of charrkind when Alessia gets exploded by Ignite Arrows AGAIN, and see the shimmering portal of Grendich Courthouse in the distance, knowing that you'll be safe there if only you can reach it without devourers burrowing up your asshole on the way.

it's pretty but it's built on a system where you start at a town and run through an instanced mission or an open area where you can do some quests. there's exploration, but it's a little incidental and a nice surprise instead of the main focus. moving around takes time and effort so you'd rarely just run in a random direction with no goal in mind hoping to see something
in general gw1 is a pretty different game from gw2, but I think mostly for the better. it knows what it does, and does it well

In general I agree with the other anon's, but to add to everything they've said, exploration in GW1 functions more as a way to collect new skills for your party. Proph handles it best in my opinion as throughout the world there are many outposts you can completely miss which contain rare skills you can only obtain from a skill trainer there. In the later game that changes to exploring to find elite skills to capture from boss enemies.

If I remember correctly there are small portions of GW1 that have been reverse engineered but the main problem is most of the game is entirely handled on the server side which is a lot of work to recode, along with a lot of the logic in how NPC's act, even the skills themselves would need to be recoded and databases would need to be manually repopulated for simple stuff like enemy spawn positions. There were some projects back a decade ago to create a private server out of fear anet would shut GW1 down, but since GW1 is still running most of those projects just stalled.

The GW1 game client itself is pretty small compared to most MMO's. WoW handles a lot on their clienside which is why there are so many mods/hacks with the game in comparison to GW1. GW toolbox is pretty much the limit of what can be done by fucking around with the client.

We failed the first run at bone fields, but fortunately managed to beat UW on the second run.

Also for some reason after we beat dhuum we walked over to this reaper and started staring at him, perhaps to assert his dominance, perhaps he has a grudge against ice wastes reaper.

Anyway for future plans sometime early December we're going to do a full HM DoA run along with HM mallyx. Later in December we'll try to fuck with some wintersday bots.

Factions prog scheduled for sometime in January 2026, I need to check my schedule before I can nail down a date, expect late January.

ermmm, how do i actually play this game? i bought the entire GW1 series on sale earlier this year, but progression is extremely confusing, like how if you want to play certain classes, you have to choose a specific expansion and there's also the issue of getting skills, i read a few guides and they make 0 sense to me, i know i might be dumb but can any anon spoonfeed me what's the best way to start the game?

Start with Prophecies. It's the first campaign and does the best at slowly easing you into the systems.
Choose a profession. Each plays differently but none is "better" than any other. As part of choosing a profession, you also get a secondary profession. You can freely use skills from both, EXCEPT that you will not be able to put points into the primary attribute of your secondary.
In Prophecies you will get most of your skills via quests which award them. Explore a bit and you'll find them. You can also buy skills from a skill trainer later.

Don't worry about campaign-locked professions in Factions and Nightfall for right now. When it's time, start a new character for each or you'll miss the first 25% of each campaign if you bring your prophecies character over.

I assume you're talking about the secondary profession quests in Prophecies. They give you skills to "test drive" the secondary profession. They go away when you try out another secondary profession but will be permanent when you lock in your secondary. You don't have to do them all except if you want the XP, but you SHOULD do all of them for the secondary you eventually lock in because you will get to keep those skills.

There is no "wrong" choice. You just don't know what the professions will provide being a new player. If you tell me your profession I can tell you what is traditionally a simple secondary option.

Seconding the prophecies recommendation. Proph handles progression very well compared to the other 2 campaigns. Make sure you go out of your way to do the quests that give you free skills.

There aren't necessarily any bad choices (you will be able to freely change your secondary later). But there are some classic combo's depends on your primary. That said you can make perfectly good builds without ever touching your secondary.

Final recommendation stay away from the meta builds website, this entire game on normal mode can be beaten even with the most substandard dog shit builds imaginable. GW1 is a strategy RPG a large part of the fun is making wacky builds and teams with good synergy many people jump to meta builds to play the game as efficiently as possible and then get bored when the game basically becomes auto play as nothing can threaten them in NM. If you are struggling I recommend the GW1 official wiki, its very comprehensive and often has map guides and tips for how to beat missions and what skills to bring such as bring extra hex removal, use minion masters, party speed boost etc...

It being more or less interesting varies by personal preference. Builds are much more interesting than GW2 imo because there's more interactivity than spamming skills off cooldown for damage.

Not as much as you'd think, but GW1 and GW2 are so vastly different that I don't think they even inhabit the same genre. GW1 strategy cooperative RPG, while GW2 is a themepark action combat game. It's definitely not for everyone and that's ok.

Guess it depends on your group comp/profession you play and the mission itself. There are a few professions in this game that are more or less expected to play a few roles monk is especially bad if you're wanting to play smiting build, or prot, even healing prayers you'll run into people wanting UA. I use to main ritualist and it's pretty much same story over there, you're running SoS or ST. Para use to have more freedom but ever since 15th anniversary they are relegated to the HR department.

Beyond that not really seen people nit pick too much, really depends on mission some stuff certain strategies are ill advised such as bringing panic or VoR into foundry. Or you'll be doing something like deep/urgoz and they want melee running a tank/AoE build.

But it's precisely that reasoning why you should join events, I would never in a million years run a 3-4 melee warriors comp on a ToPK pug group but I'm down to make anything work with guild runs.

It's usually fine, unless your party is full of turbospergs who constantly run off in a dozen different directions. It's a 10s cooldown, so it's not that hard to reapply to party members if you suspect it of having fallen off. It's not like it becomes a bad skill if you have <100% uptime.

That said, I prefer to just run spear damage bar with SY and some adrenaline boosts. Most people are happy with that.

Because having 3/8 skills on your bar always be the same handful of BROKEN skills on every class is absolutely terrible for creating diverse set ups. If they were better balanced I'd agree, but as it stands they are so powerful they dwarf all other skills by comparison. It's why in our progs if PvE only skills are allowed, we only allow 1.

Every necromancer would run Necrosis because it's just the elite Discord, but better. You'd be a fool not to have it on your bar. You'd probably even have mes go Me/N just to run it because you'd be a fool not to.

Every caster bar would contain at least 2 of these skills such as - Ebon Vanguard Assassin, because it fuels necros SR, and is extremely OP skill to begin with. Technobabble for free 5 second AoE daze (2 people running it basically ensures enemy groups can't cast spells), and Pain Inverter because it ruins boss fights and ele's. YMLaD for when you have too many PI's and technobabble's.

Running literally any other PvE skill would be self sabotage. I am quite confident you could full clear HM FoW as a player monk with heroes running only 3 PvE skills mentioned above and nothing else. Having almost half your bar always look the same or having to go out of your way to play inefficiently and not run 3 PvE only skills (because even the ones not mentioned are still miles better than average skills) is gay and boring and would actually reduce the number of interesting builds much like how every dagger spammer build uses the same 3 skills. And don't get me wrong I enjoy dagger spammer, but wouldn't it be nice if there were other dagger skills that were viable and you weren't forced to run these 3 because the other skills suck in comparison?

A lot of the account bound titles are pretty much stretch goals that aren't intended to be completed by any but the most jobless individuals. Stuff like gladiator would take playing nearly 2-3 hours a day, for the next 3-4 years. And thats assuming you win all your matches. Even simple ones like treasure hunter ignoring the cost of all the lockpicks if you were to run 1 chest per minute it'd take you like 7 days of nonstop running to max that title.

I would like to max Zrank one day but I'm under no delusions on it happening anytime soon lol. Maybe if I do my daily GotT for the next 5 years I'll get close.

Yeah I'm about 50% done treasure hunter, I mostly gave it as an easy example of an account title with a pretty absurd time requirement. If you factor in a 10e per hour (rounding up to 10k per 1e which is already unusually high) in order to pay for the cheapest lockpicks possible it'd easily add on another week at least, still not zkey but still pretty absurd for an otherwise simple PvE title.

Vaettirs are decent. Probably one of the better farms mesmer can do. I'm not sure if it's great for straight-up gold generation, I mostly just go there if I want some caster mods or it's a festival. I guess you can sell unid golds to people in Kamadan, and sell iron/dust you salvage to material traders.

That said, by far the best money maker is nick gifts. Current week is a Prophecies one in Crystal Desert, but if you can do it, then it'll be better than anything else, since you can easily sell the gifts for ectos, then sell the ectos to traders for platinum.

For flat gold it's not too bad, as long as you farm during favor hours you can ID or sell the gold drops, the vaettir trophy drops can salvage into dust or be sold by stack for a few ectos. Totally agree though on nick gifts being best way to make money. In about 5-6 weeks from today there will be Amber Chunks nick gift which can be bought from rare mat trader. I would recommend buying your amber before the month is over, if you wait until the week he requests it, they'll be expensive as fuck.

The best time to make raw gold is during halloween festival the UW quests especially mob stopper is repeatable quest you can turn in for 1k each time + ToT bags.

FoW is an absolute classic that got powercrept by nightfall and especially EotN so much so that you need to go out of your way to avoid running anything mildly meta to keep it interesting even on HM which is why I don't like running FoW normally. There's really only 3 segments you might wipe at - 1) right at the start due to overaggro 2) burning forest due to overaggro, 3) griffon quest because a griffon instant killed itself on 40 traps. Which is why I like doing FoW as part of post prog content. Our builds/team set ups are normally just scuffed enough to keep parts challenging so we don't just walk through the mobs like it's a vanquish quest.

We'll be doing a normal HM DoA run along with HM Mallyx later this month as well.

It's the final part of our 50-50 proph prog challenge that we finished last month, the prog's goal was to create strange unorthodox builds with an unusual rule set of having your bars be split in half. Overall it lead to some interesting build crafting I'd highly recommend giving it a try it can be fun to theorize and create weird builds on limited rulesets forced to take a second look at skills you might have otherwise ignored.

That said, we're going to do DoA HM run next weekend and you can bring anything you want to that.

Playing through in any order is fine. Going through in a particular order to optimize is something you do on alts.

Release order is Prophecies > Factions > Nightfall > Eye of the North. The stories are (mostly) told separately, except for Eye of the North which builds off of Prophecies pretty significantly. Any of the first three campaigns are fine to start with, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Eye of the North is an expansion meant for max level characters.

Prophecies is the slowest campaign. It can be a good intro (most in this thread will recommend it) if you want a slow burn for your first playthrough, and don't mind the game taking its time in doling out new skills. I think the worst part about starting here is just that the henchmen suck, so if you're going through solo, it can be tedious at times.
Factions is the fastest paced campaign, ramping up in difficult very quickly and speeding you along the max level, and you get access to a huge variety of skills only about 25% of the way through the game. It's the hardest campaign to start with, but if you don't find that intimidating and want to get access to build variety and gameplay where you can actually fail ASAP, it's a good starting campaign.
Nightfall is the middle ground in terms of pacing, and I think the best polished starting experience. Its major drawback is that there are a couple points in the game where you are gated by a reputation requirement. If you're doing all the optional side quests, this doesn't matter, but otherwise it demands you go off and grind for rep. It introduces heroes, which are customizable AI companions, and for this reason many people recommend it, but as a new player, your options with them are limited and adds extra complexity to a first playthrough. If you like CRPGs with full party customization, you might like them just for the extra degree of agency you get in building out your team, though.

Prophecies: you start in the zone that is not available for other campaigns. It acts as a prologue and you can't return there after you beat it.

Warriors are generally axe/shield, sword/shield, or hammer. You will be getting skills for all three lines.
Swords are fast and good for applying Crippled and Bleeding conditions. Axes are fast and good for Deep Wound condition.
Hammer are slow (slower adrenaline gain) and you don't get a shield, but they have bigger damage. Hammers are for knocking shit on itsass and raping it while it's down, also Weakness condition.

This isn't something you need to worry about right now as a new player, but there isn't any limitation to what you can wield, and it can be advantageous to wield the "wrong" thing for your profession sometimes. You'll often see PvP monks with spears and shields, for example, or PvE rangers with daggers.

Blue, Purple, and Gold weapons can be identified to show what weapon mods they contain (white items can too, but it'll just slightly increase sale value at merchants).
I'm assuming you're in Prophecies. You CAN get more bag space, but it's not something you have to worry about for the moment. Later on you can just buy them from a merchant, but for now you can find the collectors Humphreys outside Ashford Abbey or Brownlow outside Ascalon City to trade for a belt pouch.

Ele if you're looking for variety. It can nuke with fire, spike with air, support with water, or control with earth. That's the simple stuff capable of carrying you through the entire game. Then you can make healer builds, run various forms of melee, or come up with weird builds that rely on elements interacting with each other when you feel a need to keep things fresh.
Necro is the other class that excels at variety but you already have one. Feel free to pick that class if you like the idea of summoning an undead army or sacrificing your health for powerful effects.

What do bots gain from ruining the PvP modes? Who is behind it? How long has this been going on? Can/will ArenaNet do anything about it?

You get rewards which you can use to generate currency in the PvE mode.

During event days people will mass report bots and get them cleared out sometimes so that games only have real people. The rest of the time, the bots are the only reason anybody can queue for certain modes at all, so people mostly don't mind.

when you beat a campaign you get a toggleable hardmode in every zone and mission that rapes you if you don't prep for it. there are titles for beating missions or wiping zones with it on
every campaign has at least one endgame area with special drops (sf, urgoz, deep, doa), and there are 2 more universal ones (uw, fow)
the eotn expansion is designed to be grinded, there are 18 dungeons with unique drops
both of these are speedcleared by guilds and enterprising players using specialized builds https://wiki.fbgmguild.com/wiki/Main_Page
there are 9 million farms that exploit different builds to try out
but mostly "endgame" grind matters less when you can go through 4 campaigns with a different one of 10 professions which plays completely differently
