All Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds game discussion welcome! Feel free to host and share lobby codes here too! ... or hide in here when you get banned from /v/ by power-tripping jannies or drowned out of /vg/ by mobile games. Whatever works.

It's inconsistent, since it doesn't work the way Ring Boost or normal boosts do. It's not just a flat +7 speed.

Upon release you get roughly +7 Speed that gradually decreases over ~0.5 seconds (35-36 frames). For the duration of the boost, the speedometer will then continue jumping up +5 Speed and sinking in ~0.30s (19 frames) before going back up again ~0.10s (5-6 frames) later.

The way the speedometer fluctuates indicates there's something wrong with the gadget being bugged, as the speed fluctuating / resetting shouldn't be the case. If it were just a flat +5 Speed for the entire duration, it'd have some merit, but as it stands now it's not really usable, since the overall effect is much much lower than +7 to speed.
>>
>>2036524
what the hell
I thought it'd be better than ring boost given you can't really run both it and perfect bounty in parallel and it doesn't offer the benefit of actually accumulating rings
>>
>>2036527
Yeah, this is why it's important to test things instead of believing stats bars and text at face value. Speed, Accel, Power, hidden vehicle quirks and buffs, it's just par for the course in racing games. Stat bars almost always lie to you, it's annoying but that's just how it usually is. Happy to help, at least.

Yeah, a balance patch would go a long way. They did say on their roadmap that they'd release at minimum four balance patches between now and the end of 2026, but they're sure taking their sweet time... the meta may be "balanced" between invulnerable giga-sweats, item resistant slipstream bros and bagging scum, but it sure ain't as fun as >>>/vm/ctr , >>>/vm/srb2k or ASRT imo.
>>
Ichiban will be out in three days.
Festival starts in four days.
Here are the rewards:
The gadget is called Comeback Kit, exact effects TBD. However, if the data mine from a few months ago is to be believed (link in the OP), it's going to be pretty bad.

The v thread is (and this one too), but the game will be fine. I'm in enough external communities to know that for sure. Sonic fans are very, very, /very/ autistic.
>>
>>2041290
No, those threads lasted longer than anyone could have imagined.
>>
>>2041353
Autists and coomers are very good at keeping threads alive because both types are unemployed
>>
>>2041353
two full months of uninterrupted autism. no breaks. no gaps. no limitations. even when no one could play the damn game, people were posting. completely wild ride, and so much better than anything in the Sonic general. despite the freaks erping and dumping garbage overnight.

honestly I'm expecting it to come right back the moment the festival rolls around, but it's been long in the tooth as it is.

>honestly I'm expecting it to come right back the moment the festival rolls around, but it's been long in the tooth as it is.
Of course, weekend threads and festival threads will still be active made, as it should be.
>>
I'm confused on what speed modifiers stack and don't stack
I know the ring count is its own separate thing and stacks with everything
But do drifts stack with boost pads? If I'm in a slipstream do I bother drifting? What about ring boost? Should I be prioritizing a wide line with it or still hug the corner?
>>
well, i could host a lobby. but is anyone even here?
>>
>>2043307
only way to know is to test it, that's how that one guy figured out the slipstream cap and that ring boosts are counted as part of the slipstream cap
i think boost pads are similar to drifts, but unlike drifts you can go off-road with boost pads if they're strong enough (see: estadium lap 3)
>>2043400

Adept (and Expert, and Bounty) are not really worth it, but they're fun and simple. Adept gives +25% to trick speed, Expert gives +75%. It's a good effect, but not the kind of effect that's worth dedicating three slots to.

>ultimate charge's invincibility only lasts 2 seconds instead of 3, and the invincibility has a telltale rainbow effect like mario kart
Of course that rainbow glow won't help much online, but still, at least try to make it distinctive for other players.

Also, if the delay's gonna be this unreliable, at least severely reduce knockback when colliding with other players when online, cause it's ridiculous how easy it is to get smushed into walls by players who probably aren't even doing that to you on their screen. I'd take making the power stat help protect you from it too, but with everything else I'm proposing that might just make slipstream power builds the new centralizing meta, and I'd rather have many viable playstyles.

The third most represented build is Drift Kit + Air Trick Expert + Air Trick Bounty at 4 users. The other 15 users are all over the place.

If they nerf the drill they better nerf all attack items.

I was front running on Metal Harbor last night and got put into 10th place by a bunch of items that hit me one after another. It was only thanks to a drill that I was still able to not lose points over that bullshit
>>
>>2057283
bads like to complain about muh three trucks and two drills raped me on the finish line, but gloves, saws, boos and red warp ring attacks are way more of a threat for front-runners than those things, let alone the complete lack of shields that drop for you

I've been crossworlds demoralized
I don't take shortcuts anymore, because moving forward in the pack is suicide without defensives
I don't bother with the start boost anymore, because gaining rings is much easier if you start slow
I don't even shoot people with items because setting someone back isn't worth the miniscule chance throwing the item back will save me from something

That's closer to learning and adaptation than demoralization, but sure. Getting what you need to survive the final lap is more important than getting an early lap 1 lead.

>Laser seems obscenely good when other people use it and barely better than a boost wisp when I use it.
You should use it so that it ends at the start of a harder curve. Laser can't drop you on curves that require a drift to clear, so it continues until you'll on a straighter section of the track.
>>
>>2091601
My main points of disappointment with it have been
>use it for a cut, ends immediately after the cut, often under the tire of a monster truck
>using it on the final stretch but not passing the leader, even though I've had lasers zip past me at the finish line
Rewatching with the former, I notice the crystals don't rearrange so I guess you get the same endpoint as the on-course route. The latter I guess is just me overestimating its range? Maybe I should just use it on curves instead.
>>
>>2091546
I turned it off in some ill conceived attempt at forcing myself to look backwards to see what's behind me (it hasn't worked)
The game is also just visually busy so I prefer it not there, although I can see how useful it is for both gameplay and clips
>>
>>2090866
its strange to me to practice a playstyle that involves drifting 98% of the time but refusing to use silver smurfer
>>
>>2092071
nta but the line you take for Lv4 Charge is significantly different from how you have to snake with Counter Drift. regular, tech drift, counter drift, and lv2+3 qc only all have to be approached with a different mindset and different strategies based on the course shape. it's a big part of the reason why people struggle using the SS Time Trial setup compared to Drift Kit. not mentioning friction drift for reasons that should be obvious.
>>
>>2092071
Technical drift feels too goofy and I love cranking counter drifts while hearing the PING from drift bounty
It's like I'm constantly cocking my EG, revving my red queen, or landing my tricks in THPS3
It just feels good

I don't know what's going on with the speedometer during snap drifts.
>usually lose speed
>often lose ~50 and end up moving slower than if you hadn't boosted at all for 0.5-1 second
>but sometimes you lose little to nothing
>snap drift while another boost is active doesn't bypass it, but using a boost wisp immediately after will shoot you back to max
>doesn't seem related to stick position
>maybe related to how fast it's input?
>or something else entirely
It'd be nice to understand, that speed drop often makes it worse than turning normally and boosting late outside of jukes/early lv4s mid-turn.
>>
>>2093188
Also doesn't depend on vehicle type. Lowest speed it seems to set you to on SS is around 170 with or without a boost. I think it might actually just be based on how sharply the snap drift turns you? Neutral drift into snap drift has almost zero speed loss.
>>
>>2043307
Dash pads are essentially physical drift boosts, this applies to the air ones too, so they don't stack but dash panels have a small stacking bonus
Tricks and wisps just give the same drift boost that's why people always complain boost wisps feel like they do nothing
Ring boosts, collision boosts and slipstreams all work towards the same cap of 20 (30 for power vehicles) so they tend to eat into each others efficiency
Holding a drift into a transformation zone seems to give you the boost after the transformation, but holding it out of one seems to eat it
>>
>>2043307
Drift boosts, air trick boosts, dash panels, and boost wisps are lumped together with diminishing returns. Seems to cap at +40 (tested on EG but I think it's the same on all), which you'll most commonly hit going over a dash panel with two stacked drift boosts or drift boost+air trick.
Like the other anon said, ring/collision boost and slipstream are a separate grouping for another +20/30.
Air>land transformation specifically eats your drift boost, but you automatically boost for any other change. Sometimes air>land does fucky things when you manually boost before it, but landing with a lv3 active is worth it.

I will not.
I haven't tried bagging yet, so I was considering something like QR + Inventory+ + Slipstream Bounty. I suppose Dark Chao's pretty important for rerolling both yours and everyone else's items though, and in an ideal bagging scenario the drill/laser/truck already makes you invincible.

Turns out shield status has yet another benefit; it doesn't just protect from collisions, it ignores the power stat and wins them outright. Webm rel, 80 power Omega + Road Dragoon vs shielded 22 power Miku + Quad Copter.

I still don't really know what I like best for the last slot of QR slipstream.
>full Ring Boost
great at catching up to 1st, but unless you bag items with it you're not holding that position
>Dash Panel Mini Bounty
+7 from Mini Ring Boost doesn't feel like nearly enough incentive compared to the +21 the builds without Quick Recovery have
>Extended Slipstream
less likely to miss a breakaway, but I feel like Quick Recovery doesn't have issues with that often unless dogpiled
>Lv2 Quick Charge
amazing when you don't have items or dash panels, irrelevant when you do
>Ring Mercy
helps with ring economy on messier rounds, helps you get going after hits a bit faster but Slipstream Bounty isn't much slower at this so there's some redundancy
>Wisp Chance Up
don't like planning to bag, especially on a build without Inventory+, but better laser/drill odds on a build that's commonly close to the front seems like it has merit when it works
>>
>>2159659
That's the fun part, these are all viable choices. I personally prefer QC2, but I consider every choice you listed that isn't WCU competitive. For bagging specifically, I wouldn't bother with WCU unless you're also bringing Inventory Plus and/or Dark Chao
>>
>>2159707
It's fun in the sense that there's a lot of options for the flex slot. I personally find it annoying that I always feel like I'm missing something on Quick Recovery builds, which isn't a feeling I have with surfing, bagging, or +21 ring boost. I should probably just take that to mean devoting half the plate to QR isn't for me, but I like understanding all options over purely focusing on favorites.
Ring Boost and QC2 are probably my two favorites currently, but there's been plenty of times I wished I had DPMB, Ring Mercy, or Extended Slipstream too. WCU I think is kind of meme after the nerf, but better odds for multiple items that win the race is still decent value for one slot.
>>
>>2159869

Jumps like that are the only time it's even usable. I'm surprised I didn't record any festival footage of it, but every time I tried to drift a straight line and rear view with teammates near me during tap boost, the only thing I'd ever see was the wall.
>>
>>2161601
is it affected by the dynamic camera? it'd be a shame if an effective defensive tool was gimped because the camera when you're looking forward is otherwise ass
>>
>>2162419
Doesn't seem like setting matters. Rear view camera's just glued to your character's face, so you're always looking at an angle during drifts.

How viable is snaking in multiplayer here?
>>
>>2164137
Always worth doing. The primary meta build focuses on the Ultimate Charge gadget and snaking to chain its invincibility for protection from items. But even outside of that build, it's an extra +25-45 speed in online game modes that you'd need boost wisps or dash panels to reach driving straight.

Realized I've never seen a proper comparison, so I did a quick test on E-Stadium's straightaway.
>Power car driving straight (197-198 speed, 327 frames)
>Power car snaking lv2 boosts with Lv2 Quick Charge (204-221 speed, 309 frames) (~94.5% time of driving straight)
>EG snaking lv3 boosts with Lv2+Lv3 Quick Charge and Technical Drift (223-234 speed, 294 frames) (~90% time of driving straight)
It's nowhere near the level of MKDS snaking/PRB, but it's better to be doing it than not.

And for the sake of completeness, surfing with Handling/Speed/Accel.
>shield uptime
EG > Power > Handling > Speed > Accel
>speed
EG ≥ Handling ≥ Speed (~297f) > Accel (300f) > Power (302f)

I think this stretch is too small to properly measure differences between EG Handling and Speed, but I'm surprised Speed's within margin of error. Raw speed stat seems to compete with Handling's drift bonuses no problem.
Power probably maths out to being around a second or less slower across three laps, given the minor differences mostly don't matter for jumps, long turns, or air/water segments. Not that you'd be surfing seriously on a Power car in the first place, but the "slow" option's still pretty fast.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. It made for a good excuse to mess with recording settings.
>>
>>2164290
Level 4 charge invincibility seems a bit silly to me, but it does still take skill to feel the timing of items I suppose.
>>
>>2164137
>How viable is snaking in multiplayer here?
Fortunately our unfortunately, snaking is extremely meta and you will benefit immensely by doing it online. Even ignoring gadgets, it is the fastest way to drive no matter what. In offline Super Sonic Speed mode it is not AS important, but you still do it for the smaller but still meaningful speed boost.
>>
sage is yucky
>>
I'm a noob but having fun racing, what does EG mean for shield uptime?

I like using extreme gear because I'm a sonic riders autist, but the shear amount of items, especially in the last two second of the race, is staggering.
>>
>>2164717
Extreme Gear charges their boost faster
More frequent boosts = more frequent shields
The actual speed of a boost isn't changed, but having it active more often is useful
>>
>>2164685
Even as my most played build, I wouldn't spin it like that. There's some skill in learning how to maximize shield uptime and identifying situations it's better to hold a charge than burning it immediately, but ultimately you're forced to boost for speed and at the track's mercy for timing. What it comes down to is enabling frontrunning by minimizing vulnerability; aside from the end of lap 3, non-UC builds are better off hitting the brakes whenever they reach 2nd because there's no other way to survive the amount of shit that gets thrown at the frontrunners https://streamable.com/zja3wk Quick Recovery builds can shrug off a hit or two, but they'll feel the ring loss.

I get the impression Sega's currently okay with the "UC for frontrunning, Ring Boost for last second overtaking" meta the game's settled into. I'd personally like to see items toned down so item immunity isn't a hard requirement for the former and build variety can be a bit more open, but also gadget variety's decent enough in modes outside of World Match/Legend Competition so I wouldn't be disappointed by the standard meta remaining the same and Festivals being more frequent for shakeups either.
>>
>>2164787

Speed: -8 drift speed -6 boost speed
Accel: -7 drift speed -6 boost speed
Handling: +2 drift speed +3 boost speed
Power: -11 drift speed -9 boost speed
Boost: -3 drift speed -1 boost speed

0.2x boost strength (drift boost, ring boost, slipstream, boost wisp, truck, etc)
~1.2x drift charge (+20 Boost? SSS Handling feels similar to SS EG)
Gear shift mechanic removed
Laser still caps at 500 and decays to 260
Drill speed increased to 405

>HS (Festival speed)
Speed: +6 drift speed +2 boost speed
Accel: +6 drift speed +2 boost speed
Handling: +7 drift speed +4 boost speed
Power: +3 drift speed +1 boost speed
Boost: +6 drift speed +3? boost speed

1.5x boost strength
~0.9x drift charge (-20 Boost? HS EG feels similar to SS Handling)
>>

Funny part is with how weak boosts are it's a ton of extra effort for barely any gain. Had a 1:48 driving straight lines on SSS Market Street with a Speed car, had to work my ass off with Handling to get it down to 1:47.
The big reductions look shit on other vehicles, but you have to decelerate for most turns anyway so it only really matters for snaking.

Interesting new discovery, the passive speed gain from rings counts toward the same cap as ring boost/slipstream. In effect, this means for a build that hits slipstream cap at 100 rings, adding tap/collision boost or an extra two slots of ring boost will hit the same speed at 0 rings.
>>
>>2182040
Neat
I imagine running +48 Ring Boost or whatever is still really wasteful, but the option to have it there when you get wombo wombo'd on zero rings is compelling
>>
>>2185537
The main cool thing about it is ring boost builds tend to hit the cap at 0 rings with slipstream bounty, so you can get mario karted lap 3 and still have a full strength slipstream
