>What's Vindictus?
An hub-based action MMO by Nexon with a dark fantasy aesthetic. You choose from a roster of 26 characters rather than making your own, but you can customize them a bit. There's a fatigue system so trying out multiple characters is encouraged.

Posting this early in the thread, so hopefully more newbloods are aware of it:

Once you've gotten your bearings after a few missions, check out the Play Guide, shown as a little scroll with a pointed arrow in the lower right of your screen.
When starting out, make sure you're chipping-away at the three "Growth Goals" listed at the top of the menu. You'll finish these objectives naturally as you progress through the story, and they offer some seriously important rewards. Inventory expansions, AP capsules for improving your skills, free +LUK Badges to give you extra Cores (drops) when defeating bosses, and even fully-enhanced/enchanted gearsets at specific milestones.

You can make it through the early goings without paying attention to the Play Guide, but it'll be a HUGE (if not outright mandatory) help before long, so don't neglect it forever. Little sense in saying "no" to freebies when you're fresh, after all.

Would probably help if I included an image alongside the post, whoops.
The little "[...]" bubbles next to the three Growth Goals listings showcase what rewards you'll get, and as mentioned, there's some seriously essential stuff in there. Grab 'em when you can!

How do I get sexy underwear for the hotspring?

Fatigue can start to drain pretty quick early on if you're rushing through missions, and there aren't too many ways to counteract it when you're starting out, annoyingly. Becomes much less of a hindrance once you're past the earlygame, but it's definitely something to keep an eye on during your first few days.

One way to alleviate your Fatigue drain is by soaking in public hotsprings infused with special Soaps.
Check the Hotsprings window in your main menu, and visit channels marked with a red-and-black icon (Hero's Aromatic Soap). Head to the sauna, and sit down in the water via your Grab hotkey for a bit. After ~30 seconds, you'll have the hotspring soap's benefits for 60-90 minutes.
While there are multiple types of Soap providing minor stat boosts, the Hero's Aromatic variety also lessens your Fatigue usage per-mission by -25%. Since you'll be spamming stages to get through the storyline early on, these are absolutely a must to catch while you can. Keep an eye out...!

Got'cha covered. Welcome!

>>2062634
The free 15-day VIP Capsule you get from the Play Guide should grant you some freebie underwear that's less covering than the defaults.
Besides that, gotta drop NX on it. As expected for a Nexon title.

Alternatively, if you're just wanting to stay for a couple of weeks, burning your free VIP Capsule will lower Fatigue costs by 50% per-mission.
Doesn't stack with the aforementioned hotspring bonus, but you should be wanting to get those soap buffs either way. Decent free stat gains to be found there.

A few miscellaneous tidbits for the thread before I head off to bed.

[Skills]
- Following the suggested skills via the Play Guide up until around Combat Mastery Rank A will give you more AP Capsules quickly (you'll want to finish it eventually).
- Always prioritize leveling your Equipment Masteries.
- Don't bother with putting AP into stat masteries early on, their effects are pretty minor. Get them to Rank E, and keep them there until you've improved other things.
- Battle Respiration to Rank A is very nice for classes with Stamina concerns.
- If you're playing a "Legacy" character (Lann, Fiona, Evie, Karok, Kai), the max rank for your attacking skills can either be A, 6, 5, 4, or 3 (skill rankings go from F to A, then 9 to 3, as holdover from Mabinogi). If you're playing a non-Legacy character, your max rank for attacking skills is always just A. Ergo, non-Legacy characters need much less AP to max their skills.

[Transformations]
- Paladin and Dark Knight are 90% similar, and their differences won't really matter for the two-weeks most of us are spending here. Just pick whichever one you think looks cooler.
- Transformation charges come back very slowly, but can return quickly when leveling. Since you'll be leveling a lot early on, and Paladin/Dark Knight gain Path EXP by killing enemies, be sure to use your Transformation skill if it's sitting on 2 or 3 charges when you're still going through Seasons 1 and 2 (plus most of 3).
- Always choose the +Add. DMG skill instead of +Impact SPD for either Transformation.

[Misc.]
- Always have your free VIP Capsule running for a 50% cut in Fatigue used on missions.
- Nearly everything from the Play Guide lands in your Avatar inventory first. Click the little red tab on your inventory menu to open it. This is also where cosmetics and Dyes are stored.

Also, feel free to ask me anything about classes/characters, if you're curious. Been playing off-and-on since the beta days, know a thing or two.

I'm still mad about the last level cap increase locking out my entire account from doing Royal Army Raids and Red Moon Energy. It was all I was casually doing on a couple of characters and now I'm down to only one who can go on normal difficulty RME and that was only after spending a lot on equipment I was already working on beforehand. And it still isn't enough to get back in to Royal Army Raids not to mention Hero difficulty RME. Normal difficulty RME isn't any different at all so I don't know why they made the requirements for it so far beyond the current poverty gear's ceiling.

Geez. 90 levels in, and I'm still so dang torn on this character.

Neamhain is the most-recently developed character for the original Vindi thus far (also a major raidboss from Season 3, surprisingly), and going by this game's design trends over the past several years, you'd think she'd be some ultra-swift savant of the lance. Yet in stark contrast to picks like Sanyaa, Achel, and Sou, who can just endlessly attack like crazy, Neam might be one of the slowest and most deliberate characters since Latiya from back in 2022 - another spear/lance user.
Neam's entire gameplan revolves around landing rather slow attacks to build up her resource meter, spending it at 10 stacks for a lengthy charge-up slash, during which she's briefly invulnerable. Both the start up for charge and charged strike itself have full Block properties, meaning you /can/ play somewhat ignorant with it when timed well, but holding the charge too long will just get you smacked for no reward.

She does have a decent standard Guard to block attacks with traditionally, but her counter is suuuper weak compared to actual, dedicated counter-based characters, so standing and blocking all day clearly isn't optimal. Yet I can't easily envision her being able to facetank things later in the game to quickly get her resource stacks up either; especially not in Season 4, when practically everyone exists within the 2-3 shot range at all times against most bosses.
From what I've been reading, Neam's actually one of the stronger characters of the roster at endgame, so perhaps she's someone who grows into her role later on, once far more impressive equipment is in-play to shore-up those glacially slow attacks.

Certainly an interesting character so far, although I'm sorta glad I haven't seen anyone here start with her as their first-ever pick. She's been kind of an odd one so far.
Her signature outfit sure has its appeal, at least.

May as well post a few screencaps I've taken thus far, to tick the thread's image count up a bit.

This hideous thing used to be such a pain to tackle during the halcyon years of Season 1. Crazy high damage resistance, plenty of deceptively lingering attack hitboxes, and a wonky gimmick of knocking it out of the arena with timed explosives, all lead to a fight often dreaded on the S1 raiding circuit throughout the early 2010s.

>>2066247
Nexon's carried its high bar of """quality""" for some time now, that's for sure.
The most contemptible thing about any Nexon-hosted title has always been Nexon itself, as many of their in-house projects tend to be pretty solid on the whole... Buried underneath some of the most egregious practices in the industry. Fortunately we won't be running into many of those signature Nexon-isms within just a couple of weeks in this title, barring these annoyingly long maintenance periods.

Most of the time, the end-of-battle camera tries to land some dynamic shots of your final strike, to show how COOL you were during those last few moments moments. (And then clips the camera into a wall, or inside the bosses' model, or inside your character's model, and it looks awful. But it tries!)
Annnd sometimes it catches you looking like this instead. The veneer of a stoic and level-headed Paladin kinda fades away when taking on poses like these.

Some brief downtime in-between missions during the earlier parts of Season 2.

It's worth noting that, while all maps follow a similar structure now, the original release of Season 2 operated /very/ differently from the typical linear run to a boss arena.
Taking cues from Monster Hunter, each map was divided into 7-11 "subzones", each labeled with a single letter (A, B, C, D, etc), most of which housing a specific boss needing to be slain in each along with standard enemies.
Sounds pretty cool, but was a rather clunky in practice, as loading times between sectors were pretty lengthy, and needing to run from one end of the map to the other took ages. Was novel at the time, but I'd say the streamlined version of Season 2 we see today plays better overall. Also, stat requirements for clearing Season 2's raids were absolutely through the roof relative to what was feasible to obtain back then, so its marque raid bosses were exclusively the territory of whales for quite long while, similar to Space Time raids today.

One more 'shot for now, this time a decent close-up mid-mission (camera options are quite limited there).

Following-up with my previous post mentioning Season 2, here's another l o r e tidbit related to it:
Back when Vindictus was directly tethered to Mabinogi narratively, acting somewhat as the origin story of the latter game in a roundabout way, both Season 1 and Season 2 were separate, parallel stories to one another, taking place at the same time but in different parts of the world, and starring a different cast of main characters.
The Legendary Heroes namedropped in Mabinogi proper (Lann, Fiona, and "three others" which would eventually become Evie, Karok, and Kai) were the main characters of Season 1, with Vella and Hurk being the leads in Season 2.

As Vindictus was later disassociated with Mabinogi to become its own distinct property, sweeping changes to the existing storyline had to be retroactively applied to what was already written, resulting in what would eventually become Season 3 and 4's finalized narratives thereafter. That of which being the continual resetting of the world, and wresting control of humanity's fate away from the corrupted gods.
So if you're wondering why the start of Season 2 feels so awkward (if you're actually one of the few who's paying attention to the storyline and not just immediately skipping through all of it), that's probably why. Bit silly, but at least it lead to some interesting story hooks further down the line.

Season 2 implementing and forcing jumping globally also made for some S2 exclusive janky physics. If you bunny hopped while turning you'd gain a significant speed boost with any character and it was the only enjoyable aspect of the jump gimmick being forced in S2. It was fun clearing a whole oversized map's distance in like three sprint-smash jumps with Vella.

Ooh, I remember that! Every character could do it, but Vella was by far the best for skirting along the sands of Twilight Desert at mach speed.
Could land superslides with a well-timed sprint-smash right before jumping too. Made for some very interesting tech to pull off mid-fight to avoid unblockable attacks if done correctly. Probably the only good thing to come out of Jumping while it was around, honestly.

>>2066511
Oh whoa, those are some major changes.
>ATT ceiling globally removed
>Monster DEF formula recalculated
>ATT Surplus and Counterforce simplified/renamed
>Dodge characters ACTUALLY HAVE GUARD FRAMES NOW after perfect-dodging attacks (!!)
>Kai is slightly less terrible
>Greatsword!Hurk isn't as much of a meme
>Lethor buffs
>Neam mains potentially on suicide watch

Neat stuff all around. That change to dodge-type characters in particular is beyond overdue, and hopefully makes them more competitive in Season 4.
Wouldn't get too hyped about the newest raid content, though, as this is a title where only the whalest of the whales get to play with the new stuff, much like in Maplestory. Might make Level 120 equipment slightly less expensive, granted.

>Is it worth playing for the story?

That one's tricky to answer. My appreciation of Vindi's narrative is graded on a curve relative to other KMMOs of its era; which isn't exactly a very high bar to clear, as I'm sure you're aware.
As someone who's been playing this title off-and-on for over a decade (far moreso during its earlier years rather than its later ones), I've experienced this game's storyline at a much, /much/ more deliberate and thorough pace than what is offered today.
Leveling was slow, and you really chewed on every piece of content you had available. Each mission had its own little dialog briefing before it, and there were a LOT more of them to churn through during Seasons 1 and 2. Sidequests were plentiful, allowing you to learn the personalities of major characters around the villages, et cetera.

New players are simply not going to have that experience.
In [current year], you're heavily incentivized to burn through the narrative via story-skips, conserving your limited Fatigue and leaping over large swathes otherwise disposable missions to hurry you along to the "good bits" later on in the game, as is so common to see in Nexon's MMOs.
The premise and execution of Seasons 3 and 4 are still rather interesting (and I love a good time loop story in general), but I can't begrudge the others for just wanting to speed through things 'til we've all settled-out in Season 4 together.

Those aforementioned good bits - the later encounters in late Season 3 and most of Season 4 - ARE very good, it must be said. Vindi remains one of the best action-MMOs on the market from a pure gameplay perspective, even to this day.
I'd say to give this title a shot for a week or so if you're curious about it. Could take it slow, or burn your skips to catch up with the others. Either way, it's a fun time 'til hitting the patented Nexon whaling wall upon reaching the lategame (which we'll not especially hit within just a couple of weeks).

Reading about all the ways this game has been ruined over the years, as well as experiencing it first-hand was genuinely depressing. I'll have to play this on the pserver some other time because the combat really was amazing.

Definitely starting to understand why this game never succeeded. For a game whose selling point is its incredible action combat, it has incredibly shitty action combat. The camera's garbage, movement is extremely difficult, and the enemy design is just trash. No audio tells, barely any visual tells, wonky hitboxes, the works. The number of mandatory animation cancels you have to be aware of is ridiculous - often you'll do a normal attack or block and you'll be completely frozen in place for two or three SECONDS after the move occurs because there's a long animation back to neutral that you're supposed to cancel out of.

The sound design overall is piss poor, with a cheap stock "you got hit" sound effect that sounds royalty-free. Often it plays when you didn't actually get hit, I have no idea why.

There's just no reason why any action game fan would want to play this, unless they're the types that enjoyed fighting Plesioth. I'm sure it "gets better later" - that's why they give you broken OP gear to 2-shot all the janky early bosses. But if you take the time to actually face the early bosses with regular gear, you see how bad it all is.

Have to wonder which characters you've played and which bosses you were fighting to reach those conclusions, because that doesn't sound like the game I'm familiar with at all.

>The camera's garbage
You can bind a key to instantly snap the camera back to the boss, if you're having issues tracking your target with the standard mouse-controlled camera. Basically required if you're playing on controller, for whatever reason. The forced zoom-in on Smash Attacks is a bit much, I'll agree.
>movement is extremely difficult
You have a normal run and a sprint toggle, plus certain attacks which move you forward. Some counterattacks reposition your character. Pretty reasonable.
>[Enemies have] no audio tells, barely any visual tells, wonky hitboxes, the works.
Now that's just straight-up not true. Every enemy has its respective tells prior to attacking, whether they're glaringly obvious, or subtle lead-ins to specific attack sequences.
Certain bosses have large attack hitboxes, but many instances of perceived hitbox jank are often the result of poor latency to a host's connection, as this game uses Source Engine lag compensation ala TF2 or CS:S.
>often you'll do a normal attack or block and you'll be completely frozen in place for two or three SECONDS after the move occurs
The only way you'd be outright locked-up for that long after attacking or blocking, is if you joined a boat being hosted by a SEA running on a potato PC, or something similar. Lobby host quality matters a lot in this title.
Even the slowest Block in the game - Neamhain's standing shield - lasts for less than a second, and you can act out of it immediately upon successfully guarding something.

You sure you're not mixing this game up with Vindictus: Defying Fate, the rather questionable Soulslike bearing this game's name? Those complaints sound more accurate to that title instead of the original, from what I've played of its unimpressive closed beta tests.

A few optimizations found in the key rebinding menu for you 'lot:

- Disable "Attack Where Camera Faces"
This will allow you to hold a direction key to influence where you're attacking during a combo. Has several practical uses, most notably the practice of purposely whiffing your Normal Attacks to get to your Smash Attacks faster (also lessens the need to constantly center the boss on your screen).

- Enable "Lock Vertical Motion on Closest Enemy"
Somewhat stabilizes the camera if you're fighting larger enemies.

- Enable "Auto-Aim at Enemies When Throwing"
This engages a hidden "lock-on" system which automatically points your character towards the boss if you're close enough to reach them, so long as you're not holding any movement keys when attacking. Secretly applies to all attacks, not just thrown Secondary Weapons (despite what the option claims).
Lets you land counterattacks from awkward angles much more reliably.

- Grab and Kick Commands
Some characters have built-in shortcuts for certain attacks activated via the Grab or Kick commands. Check your tooltips to see if one of your attacks falls under this category, as it can sometimes behoove you to keep your Grab or Kick keys easily-reachable.

Ah yes, that outfit.
You would not be surprised to learn that specific costume is the most expensive in the game, and the goal of many an utterly shameless whale to obtain.
Kind of surreal to know even basic, client-sided nude mods had a high chance of getting you banned back in the day, and now we have things like /that/ available as official content. Honestly curious how Nexon was able to get away with it (not that I'm complaining, per-say).

The Season 1 Dragons were not good, no. Nor were the earlier Season 2 raidbosses - Lakoria, Kraken, Bark, etc.
We are not in Seasons 1 or 2 anymore, however, and most Season 3/4 encounters are against monsters you can actually read, or have cameras properly zoomed-out to accommodate their size. Getting that upset over a few outliers is like dropping the entirety of Monster Hunter because Plesioth exists, to use your own example.

Anon, my entire post was about how bad the early bosses are. Can you read my post again? I very clearly said that I understood why the game never became a hit. When it came out, do you think people were saying "just wait, S4 will be great!"? No. People were saying it was jank. This entire time I thought Vindictus actually had good combat, and it confused me why it wasn't successful. Now I simply understand that I was mistaken - it didn't have good combat, and that's why it wasn't successful.

You're in a little deep with Vindictus, anon. You've been playing for 15 years. Do you think you maybe have a different perspective on it than the average player? Maybe you like it a little bit more than they do?

Does anyone know why I don't have the "restart battle" option any more? I used to be able to restart a boss fight if I died on it, now all I get is "revive" or "return to town".
>>
>>2069150
It's not really THAT jank though. The early bosses are bad and boring, as are some of the early characters (though those have mostly been fixed up), but I wouldn't describe it as being jank. Rough around the edges, sure, but overall still very fluid with response controls. I also think you're forgetting that this game originally came out in a time before Souls games even existed. The most comparable things around the same time would be the Monster Hunter games on PSP, which feel a LOT more jank than Vindictus does.

You say it wasn't a hit, but again I think you're discounting the fact that PC gaming as a whole was what, maybe 1/100th the size it is today? Also, believe it or not, if you're a true oldfag, the game used to have daily threads on /v/. And then, when /vg/ was first created, it existed there for a while before eventually falling out of style like most MMOs do.

I'm not even that anon you're responding to, by the way. Just someone else who comes back to mess around with Vindictus once every year or so, so I take occasional peeks into these threads. Here is something else to consider: TERA came out -after- Vindictus. Status? Dead. Blade & Soul came out -after- both of them. Status? Dead. So that Vindictus has survived so long while other, supposedly "better" action MMOs have died must mean it's doing something right. And this is Nexon we're talking about, who love to EoS things.
>>
I haven't touched this game in years, but that Vindictus 2 alpha months ago reignited something in me
>>
Lynn's kinda tricky. Her game plan seems to revolve around dealing stacks on bosses, upgrading those stacks to more potent variants, then detonating the entire stack for massive damage. Getting these stacks on the boss is the difficult part because you can only inflict them at the end of long combos. In such a fast paced game I keep getting knocked out of my attempts before making them stick.

There's quite a lot to learn about each of the playable Mercs who make their way to Colhen's lodge.
Chatting with them every day and gifting them their two "preferred" items, gradually raises their relationship value with you, resulting in little story snippets every ~20% or so.

At the highest level (something like 300% or thereabouts), you actually unlock a special team-up ultimate attack, exclusive to your character's "Fated Bond" - a single Mercenary marked with a star beside their portrait when viewing them in the Lodge. This tag-team combo skill can only be performed in a party, when two players match one another's Fated Bond characters, and both have maxed-out their respective relationship with the other.
As such, you'll almost never get to see these special attacks in reality, since the odds of finding two specific people in the same party who just-so-happen to be playing characters who share an in-universe Fated Bond with one another, /and/ have both maxed-out said Fated Bond, AND remember their exclusive team-up attack even exists, /AND/ is fighting a boss which can be restrained by it... Are incredibly unlikely, to put it mildly. Still a neat thing all the same.

Note the (incredibly pixelated) red eye glowing on this boss. Whenever you see your target's eye flash red (it's a very obvious tell, as your screen also flashes along with it), be sure to run the hell away, as whatever it's about to do cannot be dodged, blocked, guarded, or deflected.
Most of these unavoidable attacks tend to be grabs, which spell near-certain death if you're caught in them. They'll be more common during the later Chapters.

You'll get a taste of what your character's canon get-up looks like through one of the Play Guide's freebie gifts, but unfortunately the glamour only lasts 'til Level 101; at which point you'll go back to wearing whatever your actual armor might look like instead.
Not a terrible thing, per-say, as this title's armor designs are generally quite appealing on-the-whole (at least by over-the-top KMMO standards). But it does mean the loss of everyone's favorite latex biker outfit for poor Neamhain here, so wave goodbye to this especially form-fitting look from here on out.

Whew! What a wild ride tonight ended up being.

Started off rather quiet, with a couple of us proving the once-intimidating Abyssal Arena 2 was a total joke post-patch, before seguing into what would've been one VERY hard-fought battle against one of Season 4's Level 110 encounters.
Fortunately, a kindly and highly-informative local happened upon our expedition, seemingly coming forth from the mists to shepherd us to success in the battles soon to come. Before long, she had taken us on a whirlwind tour of every single Level 110 encounter in the game; a sight seldom seen by genuine newbloods for sure, and very much an appreciated one.

Carried on quite a lengthy chat with the surprisingly-willing local after our ride had ended, talking about all sorts of things, including proper lategame progression for newer players. Plenty of info which isn't readily explained by the game - at least not in a reasonable manner - of which I'll gladly go into another time when I'm not due for bed and/or work.
Even now, there is much to this title which is still brand-new to me, and I'm certainly glad that some of the natives still playing on the live client are welcoming of wayward newcomers and returnees willing to give their game a shot in [current year].

(Also switched back to Sanyaa - had my fill of Neamhain for now. Neam's a strong pick, but her 'kit just isn't jiving with me. Still have a few Season 3 photos to post of her though, sometime later on).

Finished season 1! Been having a lot of fun in our 3-man party.
It's crazy how much faster solo is compared to a party. When solo, you can just hit next mission when you finish a level, whereas a party would have to go back to town, manually find the next mission, get all the players on the boat, ready up, then set out.
It feels like the bosses are much more difficult in a party, so partying up to take down stronger enemies is pretty rewarding.

Neamhain's cool. I like her combos better than normal -> smash. It's nice that her counterattack doesn't take a million years, it's just a quick burst of light. A lot of vindictus characters seem to have this issue where they spend more time doing counterattacks than regular attacks. Vella actually gets less fun as you level her because Cross Cut goes from being a cool instant burst of damage to a 3 second long combo you do whenever the boss attacks. I think they tried to fix that for a lot of new characters by tying the counterattack to a resource, but they really should have just toned down the counter animations.

Time for the latter-half of my romp through Season 3, I'd say...! Also very tired from work, so forgive me if my added flavor text isn't especially coherent this morning.

We resume our journey having emerged from the labyrinthine underdark, reuniting with the forces on the surface to survey the frozen wastes north of Rocheste for signs of what might be causing the wretched plague ravaging the land. Would say getting pulled into a dream dimension to battle ancient fiends is pretty dang suspicious by most metrics.
Granted, you can barely see said fiend in this 'shot through all of the particle and distortion effects going on, but you'd best believe this wretched beast is getting its head thoroughly handed to it.

>>2071725
It's super cool to see you three giving the earlier Seasons a proper shot on their own terms.
Damned rare to come across those willing to take their time throughout Seasons 1 and 2 these days, and even if I do hold the belief that this title's encounters only get better the further into the climb you go, there are certainly some standouts to appreciate in the earlier stages as well.

Will say as a friendly heads-up, however: Don't let Kraken and Bark dissuade you.
Bark in particular was a rather infamous low-point in Season 2, so once you beat that rather "interesting" fight, it's all uphill from there.

Politely ignoring the four posts following yours...

Hey. Remember the best*** fight from Season 1?
Well guess whaa~aat?
Heeee's BACK! And slightly less obnoxious to fight this time (but only slightly)...!

Yes, much as the three Dragons were a low point of Season 1 for many, so too is this reprise of its most-infamous one often seen as the worst fight of Season 3, and a clear example of why bigger isn't always better. This is one encounter I'm glad to speed through solo, personally.

I wanted to like Neam, but the weirdly clunky nature of her charge attack and rather "samey" Active skills just got under my skin.
Can recognize she gets results (and is apparently still top of the heap even after multiple nerfs), but she just isn't for me. Which is fine, not every character is made for everyone, after all.

Will agree this title gets pretty counter-heavy later on (at least if you're playing a character with a reliable one). But I'm also someone who mained Fiona during Seasons 1 and 2 - even when she was at her weakest - so counterattacks making up the bulk of my damage output on some fights is fine with me, personally.
On that note, I've heard TwinSword!Vella had a rework recently, gaining great power at the cost of her beauty (at least according to the local I spoke with). How'd that end up fairing for her?

This scene (and a few others down the line) really shines if you're a Paladin specifically. Always made a point of crashing its gigantic, holy sword ontop of this blood-soaked wreck for the decisive blow - felt more cinematic that way.

Alt-take of the above, as I got lucky with the random action-cam at the end of the encounter.
If you can solo this horrible thing, you've got enough mastery of your character to tackle the final fight of Season 3... Of which I won't be spoiling here, as I never landed a decent 'shot of it during my Neamhain's ascent, tsk.
Might venture through the early portions of Season 4 on this Neam, or I might just stick with Sanyaa moving forward. Either way, it's always neat to try out a new character, and there's plenty of them to choose from in this title...!

The spin2win Medusa lookalike on the sunken ship was pretty tough. It was hard to dodge the quick attacks in the small arena and the move that forces you to dance was hard to see coming. We wiped there once or twice. The actual worst part about that fight was this door lock that appears once a player enters the boss arena. It pops up super fast, directly behind the first player who touches it. Our party got split up here at least 3 times, forcing us to reset. Even moving slowly as a group would sometimes get one of us trapped!

Kraken and Bark were pretty okay, actually! I liked firing the ballista to kill the Kraken and while the Bark fight wasn't amazing gameplay wise, it was more than funny enough to make up for it.

I'm really just not liking this game. Everything about it feels bad. I spend 10x as long in loading screens and wrestling with the bad character dialogue UI as I do actually fighting enemies. If I take off the free gear, fights are a challenge, but then I'm left wondering why I'm bothering to make the fights a challenge when every boss only has 3 attacks and half of them are palette swaps of each other.

It's weird because I've been hearing about Vindictus for years and always felt bad for not playing it, but now I really don't feel bad. Like who fucking cares? It's not worth it. The action combat works against it, frankly, it's a huge miss. It's a bad social game because you have to be locked in the entire time you're playing it. Every second you spend talking to someone is a wasted second you could spend in a loading screen instead.

I'm not surprised /v/ liked this game back in the day. It's a complete /v/ trap. They have to defend it because it has "objectively good gameplay", and they'd be outed as casuals if they didn't like a game that featured a dodge button.

Dunno man. I wouldn't disagree with you overall, specially about it not being among the better social games.
-The combat is pretty jank by today's standards, ye. I can kind of see it in the eyes of an MMO player 15 years ago though, and in that sense it seems pretty damn impressive to me. The jank kind of gets a pass with regards to that, but it's definitely not that good at it. I forget if it's a contemporary with Dragon Nest or if it's an earlier title, but I'd easily say Dragon Nest did it far, far better.
-The UI clutter and menuing hell is an absolute disaster. I'm surprised they didn't even get the wardrobe/cash shop UI to be more intuitive. Couldn't even get that right to drive sales lel.
-The game is absolutely gorgeous though, and that's likely a large part of what hooked anons to it back in the day. I'd assume so at least. I'm having a great time with it personally, but yeah, not necessarily a game I'd evangelize to others.
>>
>>2073569
It is really pretty. There was this short era of gorgeous kMMOs before gachas and Mihoyo entered the scene and started really dictating how games were supposed to look. Honestly it makes sense to me that the looks are what the game has become known for.

Another unexpectedly lively night, this time delving into this title's eight-man raiding content, otherwise known as the ever-popular "Redeemers".

Four of these apocalyptic horsemen (and horse-girls) exist in total, each one proving a real test of skill and mettle to overcome (although only one of them actually sports a proper steed - bit of false advertising there).
Healing opportunities are somewhat limited in these encounters, only allowing for Exquisite Potions and standard, single-target Revive Feathers at ones' disposal. No cheesing mechanics with freebie VVIP insta-heal potions here, these battles are real fights.
Completing these engagements just a couple of times grants some pretty dang nice stat bonuses for your chosen character, which can extend to your alts as well after a bit of legwork. Certainly something worth running if you get the chance.

As someone who'd never attempted any of these Redeemer battles before, I'd say I actually did fairly decently. Was dead last on the damage charts as expected (thankfully you only see your own output compared with the top dog at the end-of-battle screen), but I didn't go down once throughout the entirety of the first three engagements, only falling to some unexpected mechanics during the final fight.
It's great seeing parts of this game I never expected to reach during my brief return trip here. There's quite a lot left for me to experience, even after dabbling here-and-there throughout the years.

More OOB discoveries! Excellent stuff.
On that note, one of my favorite examples of OOB chicanery is coming up for you soon, if you're just getting started with Season 3:
After defeating Lugh Lamhfada, head to the edge of his arena, dodge off the edge into the death-water, and hold spacebar. As [Space] is the default keybind to ascend when swimming in Half Life 2, you'll float to the top and awkwardly bob around whilst having free movement to explore the entire map. Take pictures!

Well, that was a neat 'shoot, I'd say!
Glad to have made it to one of these events again, posing around amongst good company and inevitably complaining about arbitrary camera restrictions. Both are staple traditions of this project which I'm thoroughly pleased to see carry on from title to title (perhaps the second one less so, but it's all part of the process).
From 480 screencaps taken, I've narrowed my share down to just 21 photos overall. A good number of them will be "alt-takes" of existing works, but hopefully there's a few decent ones in this set to appreciate.

Normally I'd write little flavor-text accompaniments for every screenshot I post, but as this is more of a batch-upload sort of deal, most of these will go unvoiced this time around. The photos clearly speak for themselves in this case (and that totally isn't an excuse for me just being lazy).

Lettuce begin.

Plenty more left to see in the week ahead, and quite a few of us have made respectable progress during our stay so far. Maybe next time we'll swing by Rocheste and Berbhe, to complete our town-and-village tour in this title...!

Vindictus has gone by "Mabinogi: Heroes" in Korea since its inception, with Season 1 originally acting as a prequel story of how humanity escaped from the doomed Fomor realm and found the promised land of Erinn featured in Mabinogi proper.
Despite the later rewrite to distance Vindi from Mabi and make it more of a standalone property, it's still called Mabinogi: Heroes in Korea even now, even if its connections to Mabi proper are pretty tenuous at this point.

Tangentially related, there was also going to be a true numbered sequel to Mabinogi in the form of Mabinogi 2: Arena, although this one never left the prototyping stage. Would have taken Vindi's more realistic aesthetic, and turned its moment-to-moment gameplay into something closer to a Diablo-like dungeon crawler.
Some super early trailers and concept art/renders are all we have of that one:

Interesting to see the ultra-early workings of what would eventually become Letty first make their appearance in the trailer above, at least.

If you want even more confusion, the recent Mabinogi Mobile (which is still KR only) includes a pretty faithful recreation of Colhen. I really like the BGM for it too. I've been looking for if there was ever an official statement about splitting the franchise/lore from Mabinogi, but I've not been able to find anything.

I got to the Regina fight. I've always loved her theme but it's good to know she has a cool and fun fight as well. My only complaint is that you have a tendency to get stuck on the doohickey in the middle of the arena.

I think it's funny that the game told me I was below the recommended attack for her fight, but I was apparently alright on defense - when I was dying in 3 or 4 hits the entire fight.

Started out strong with a trip to everyone's favorite pretty-boy from Season 3, an iconic fight from the era with a fantastic battle theme to match. Equipped my Trainee Daggers to drop from ~51k to ~17k ATT for the occasion, so as not to spoil the moment for those freshly arriving to it.
Can't recall who's Paladin this might've been, but they sure knew how to strut. Some real confidence in that pose right there.

With enough perseverance (and some choice air-strafing around walls), you can even end up on the hidden floor underneath the map!
As this bottom-most layer has completely default properties, the void sounds like wood when you run along it, and attempting to run off into the /real/ abyss beyond just warps you back onto the inky blackness. Neat stuff.

This time in Berbhe for a trip to the lands below the already-quite-low. Took more than a few tries to finagle our way up here (that air-strafe at the end is crucial), but we got there in the end.
Finding this little hop over the map's edge must've been a real party trick, back when Season 3 was still new.

Fun fact: Turning on your Screenshot Mode and looking near the edges of the abyss down here can reveal some odd structures floating off in the distance. Those are some of the backdrops used for various indoor scenes in Berbhe, where the camera gets taken upon entering those locations.

Don't get spooked while down here, the invisible walls and broken geometry won't necessarily kill you if you keep your wits about you.
There's also a few random bits of map-baked UI down here as well, such as a little "Battle Quest" icon with an arrow nearby. Would've been placed infront of Berbhe's mission board, but for whatever reason, was moved to the abyss instead.

Elchulus was only fun to refight after falling to irrelevance the last decade to use the shelter buff to go fast. The spammy one in season 3 is just annoying even after they scaled it for solo. The Royal Army Raid one became so much less interesting when people stopped coordinating to beat up the spines and break-offs.

>>2073116
Clash doesn't require throwing your pillar. There's also the auto-clash which lets you just hold a button to do it for a lesser effect.

>>2073444 Checked
I don't remember if it helps for those moments, but there's an "unstuck" feature they added a few years into the game where if you stop moving for a while a prompt comes up to type it into the chat and it'll teleport you from where you're stuck. It's primarily for when you clip into the environment I'm not sure if it works for when you can still move around properly while also locked behind an enemy gate.

>>2077169
I forgot to mention that using the actual armor pieces instead of displaying an Outfitter means you can actually see them break in-battle. I still hate that the Outfitters always completely disable that aspect even if the damaged models already exist for the set.

The floor of the underground shrine is just barely low enough to be entered from the outside whilst waltzing around down here.
Don't be fooled, however, trying to reenter the map once you're out is largely a trap. Invisible walls work both ways in this title, and what keeps players safely locked in during normal gameplay also keeps tricksy boundary breakers out.
Still allows you to mess about with the Goddess Statue all the same, if you're tenacious enough to work your way from behind its model.

All of these are from Season 4, but they're largely concealed by all of the particle effects and such, so it shouldn't be /too/ spoilery.

I've full respect for anyone who pieces together a look made out of in-game armor.
That takes some serious commitment, and often ends up looking more appealing than just heading over to the Wardrobe and dropping the cash for a full, pre-built outfit. Yes I'm aware of the hypocrisy.

Dullahan was a bit meh, his hitboxes are waay to janky. Surely a step-up from the bosses right before him though. That boss from the screenshot though... pure kino. I adored that bossfight! You really weren't lying when you said the game starts feeling substantially better with S3. It's a shame getting past S1~2 is a bit of a slog.

I was feeling really close to being 'done' with this game at the tail end of S2, fights were feeling way too mashy and repetitive with bosses being differnt flavours of the same sandbag, getting you to just click through a variety of tabs and windows a-la-gacha and equipping the next tier of freebies. I'm very very glad I stuck it through though!
>>
>>2078132
I agree with this. I was completely checked out of the game, but there was a notable improvement with Regina. Music, fight design, just the general spectacle of things. I still completely understand why the game was never a success despite its gameplay design, because the gameplay design really was awful for a very long time.

Ein Lacher is all I'm willing to do since my account isn't stat restricted from it account-wide unlike Red Moon Energy and Royal Army Raids. I can't be bothered doing stories/progressing past the free Orna gear when it was painful enough investing in one character to just barely make the cut for the current RME normal requirements.

Old records are from dabbling a long time ago. They changed gold medals from 0 hits to 3 hits allowed.

I know they'll never do it, and at this point, I don't know if it'd even help any if they did, but they really SHOULD just have new characters start at Season 3 by now. If people are feeling nostalgic or are curious about the lore or whatever, keep all the S1 and S2 under some legacy menu that allows people to still go back and do them if they want.
I can't even fathom have many thousands of players have probably tried this game over the years and quit before they even hit S2. It's been a long time now, but I used to follow a couple MMO channels on Youtube and whenever a new character would come out, these people would go back to the game, try it out for a bit, have a little bit of fun but ultimately be off-put by the piss-easy difficulty and jankyness of S1, then quit. Again and again.
Even Season 3 itself is over 10 fucking years old at this point. The jump in quality from then to current is almost as big as the quality gap between S1 and S3. They're almost like completely different games.
>>
>>2078234
In defense of the earlier seasons, outside of characters just being far weaker, they were often designed around group play and fight specific gimmicks. A ton of these fights were designed around doing some mini game to force a knockdown and get damage. Almost all of these were removed as they were impossible to do in solo play when they streamlined the early game.

An example from right before Regina is Crom Cruaich. He used to have a phase where he'd summon 4 statues. They'd fire unavoidable AoE unless there was a player nearby, so you'd have to split the 8 man party into 4 groups to handle all the statues while someone held aggro on the boss. Then the fight would end with a survival bullet hell phase which would ramp up until he died. All of that is completely gone from the game now and leaves the fight feeling undercooked. Season 3's gimmicks are largely in tact because they shifted towards personal gimmicks like Regina's corruption meter rather than group gimmicks. Although a key S3 boss did also get her bullet hell phase removed.

That isn't to say the current state of S1-2 doesn't suck, it's absolutely boring shit now. But they were genuinely decent fights back in the day. But it turns out the action game audience just wants to actually hit things with their weapons instead of running around carrying ballista bolts.

How'd you land a Gold against Lugh 1.0, anyway? That's the only fight I'm missing top marks on with my Sanyaa.
Couldn't wrap my head around how you're supposed to deal with his big arena-wide instakill, since collecting the necessary orbs to protect yourself against it counts as "getting hit" by them. Perhaps they fixed that issue, would certainly be nice.

>Repair costs skyrocketed with the level 105 set
Repair fees can get pretty rough prior to reaching the end of your Growth Goals via the Play Guide, and receiving your freebie Orna set.
Once you've made it there, you'll be able to join-up with others for the 110-series of major Raids throughout Season 4. Clearing those missions (ideally through the Quick Departure or Battle Circuit menus) will provide a decent amount of Gold to keep you out of the red, as well as Ardri Seals to spend on further improving your Orna set to +13, among other things.
The farther into the raiding circuit you are, the more Gold you'll get for completing stages, so repair fees aren't as much of a hassle later on.

>Is there any sustainable way to heal fatigue
You've got two options here, both of which are probably a bit of an ask given our current runtime:
1) Make a second character, and play on them whilst your main's Fatigue is slowly recovering (this is rather common).
Or
2) Grab VVIP from the Cash Shop, and get three +10% Fatigue Recovery potions dropped into your Avatar Inventory panel every hour or so.
There ARE fairly cheap three-day and seven-day versions of VVIP up for sale, but yes, these two options are indeed the rub if you're planning to spam Raids later. Not bad by Nexon standards, yet something to begrudgingly consider nonetheless.

A quick addendum to the last point (due to hitting the 2000-character limit on the previous post...):
It's worth mentioning that Fatigue is more of a concern if you're already very low on it (which you likely will be by the end of Season 3, if you're cutting a quick pace and/or aren't using Story Skips).
Setting aside a character and letting them recover up to 200-300% Fatigue should safely keep them within a good range to run a respectable variety of Raids and Abyssal Arena for several nights before needing to skip a day or-so on that character again, provided you're at least getting your Heroic Soap buff from the Hotspring before heading out to lessen Fatigue loss (or ideally VIP/VVIP if it's still available).

More 'caps to add to the pile...!
These are about a day or-so late, but better late than never, right? Much prefer threads who's posters remember the "image" part of this imageboard, as lord knows that isn't especially common these days. (That's a whole different topic to get into, however).
A quick post-battle snippet of a whole heaping helping of randoms (and (Me)) to kick things off. The kinds of looks you can come up with in this title can be pretty impressive, as you'll soon see later on in this batch of photos.

Silly as this might appear, I'll actually be spoilering these next two 'shots, as I'm quite confident a good number of us at the moment haven't yet ran through the gauntlet of Redeemers just yet. Soon...!
The spectacle of these battles is really cranked-up to 11, with plenty of phase transitions and mid-battle cutscenes (for better or worse). Can be rather tricky to actually see these bosses with eight players on the field at once all going nuts against them, however.

This XGun!Kai was a real master of impersonations, their outfits (and even personalities) were astonishingly on-point. Although I don't believe they'll be especially stealthy wearing a camo like that one out in an open, green field...

Full respect for those who commit to the bit as much as this guy did. There's plenty of welcome appreciation for scantily-clad waifus and chiseled husbandos in this title, but it takes some real commitment to go beyond the norm and define your look in a more nuanced matter. The Dyes alone must've ran this guy a small fortune, whew.

On our second pass through the Redeemer circuit, our guild's own Hurk came along for the ride.
Despite not having a clue what was happening, they performed admirably against fearsome foes he'd most certainly never seen before. The time-tested tactic of swinging at whatever was moving until it stopped worked quite well here.
This arena's harsh lighting really makes metallic armor's features pop, certainly appealing in its own way.

Its an S+ tier action game thats ruined to an unplayable state by the devs literally giving up 6 years ago and going full tits and ass costume creation only. zero content. The game has tried to catch every trend because it lost its own identity about 2 years in when it first gave up on the "woah ingame physics" aspect and its been building system on top of system that isnt compatible in the slightest. They tried to add jumping and built the character Karok around the jump and the entire season 2 boss catalogue on jumping. Then removed jumping from the game making season 2 and karok unplayable.

There is no similar game. I wish there was. BDO combat is some sort of weird rhythm game where you input the same combination of moves in a row over and over and over again. Theres maybe two variations based on if its a big single target or a group of smaller targets. You do this and try not to stand in the giant red circles on occasion and thats the game. Vindictus is an action game like DmC or ninja gaiden or even Nioh. Which I play all of those too but they arent mmo so theres no sense of community which is a draw for me.
