You can drive one around at least, but it'll be hard to use well dodge/accuracy wise.
With 0 skill you're mostly limited to basic Zaku 2s, or a Zaku Desert type. Zaku F2s at 4, and the first high mobility is the Zaku RP at 6. After that they start wanting 18-20 MS skill. Check the Ms Performance Info pdf for the skill reqs.

I got stopped by a war between a Dobday and a Big Tray (and its' endless horde of Gelgoogs) with a handful of Gundam Grouinds/Ez8s/Proto Gundams/FA Gundams/BD-1 EXAMs and was eventually tore apart by the Gundams because they prioritized me for some reason

It's the ultra end game combat area. It expects you to be in a crafted, upgraded suit with maxed stats, skills, and weapons. Or at very least a well thought out skill set and stat spread to avoid npc damage.
If you want something more managable, scout around the federation SSAEO or whatever they're called. The shit that isn't your space port but is federation aligned, and go to the fleets around it. Think of them like a supply base on the ground. Find one that has the strength of enemy you're hoping for and go from there.

Open pvp esoteric jp grindfest describes it pretty aptly.
There are no quests. NPCs that ask for items give, basically nothing for them so there's no point. You get in a suit, shoot things as number goes up, then shoot stronger things so number keeps going up fast.
Then you maybe go fight people on the other team (which are all us since we're 95% of the active playerbase with 10-15 people playing) in combat that amounts to, can you damage someone enough through 30+ health bars of shields and repair kits to kill them and chasing them as they schizo run around trying to not get shot.
It has it's charm, and getting to run round in funny mobile suits from the funny mech anime is fun, but there is not much depth whatsoever to the game beyond who made their numbers just right to deal with someone else's chosen numbers.

I've been trying for days to get this to work on linux.

My transport glitched me into the space station and I couldn't get out.
Thank god the hangar ship was close enough for me to access it.
I got onto a suit, found and abused the /unstick command like my life depended on it, and eventually glitched out.
