You don't really need to know all that much to be decent at it but at the higher/highest levels it gets quite difficult and a lot of the tips and tricks that gain you a shitload of time are gatekept. For the sake of fun, try to avoid AWD/engine swaps in general and just git gud at purist tuning. If you start getting really competitive and chasing time above everything else the game loses a lot of charm and you just end up racing shitters with a chang mindset that have no etiquette or honor running the most metaslop tunes available. It's much more fun to figure out how to tweak shit so that it fits your particular driving style. Tuning to be fast is quite different than tuning to be fun. You should learn how to do both, but focus on the fun first and the fast will come naturally over time. If you get really lucky you can make one of your favorite vehicles both fast and fun and style on niggas in metamobiles. Although unless you have a ton of free time it's going to take a while to truly figure shit out, and the best tuners are all unemployed autists that can afford to spend 20-200 hours running laps with telemetry open testing all manner of shit to eek out tenths/hundredths of a second or reverse engineering someone elses tune to make it fit their driving style.
