Welcome to the Arena FPS General thread. A genre so dead that it can't maintain a thread on /vm/.News:2026-02-08 Low DPI Simulationhttps://quakelife.ru/labs/dpi/2026-01-31 Reflex Reloaded has released https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/328070/view/512981748906198078?l=english2025-10-03 Momentum Mod has releasedhttps://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1802710/view/62620619250862852?l=english2025-08-31 The Contenders 3 Released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgvrOGmJFbg
The only arena FPS I play is UT2004 and since I'm an old man with shit wrists I really cannot enjoy the almost mandatory strafe hopping that makes the game fast. Without it everything is just so slow and the bots take advantage of that (can't play against real people anymore). Is there something I can do to make it not require a double input? In the meantime I have to unfuck my folders and take out all the dumb shit that 4chan characters/voice pack put in.
we should let the afps genre die in dignity, bros. we all had your fun 2 decades ago. time to let go.
any active arena shooters recommendations? I'm familiar with Quake and Half-Life, but never played the PvP scene.
>>2243926>activedamn I would have said Xonotic but it failed to get any traction when it was new in the 2010s. That game feels really neat but the playerbase is double digits.
>>2243926Quake II, yes, 2
Adding things to 2K4 is such a pain in the ass because removing them means searching for the files yourself in each of the asset folders. After clearing my install twice in the past to deal with this, I'm now just holding onto mod archives to know what needs pruning when I end up not liking someone's model/sounds. Still not sure how to match soundpacks to models in the event they aren't bundled together - can anyone say if it just has to be a naming convention match?for example would ut2k4-TF2-SPY just need a corresponding filename for its voice bank?
>>2243926>active arena shooters
>>2243926Quake live, for clan arena and FFAquake world for 4v4 pugsQuake US CPMA for shitposting and hoping for people to play 4v4 ctf, and playing duels against whoeverReflex Arena for duels and shitposting in the main discord chat, 2 more weeks till it goes f2pWarfork/Warsow for their own thing, idk but they seem active enough
>>2243926UT2004 has some pretty active servers, check the yt channels and you will see how much active they are:>miasmarocks (VCTF, although with the berserk mutator on)https://miasma.rocks/https://www.youtube.com/@wishnix60/videos>Omnipotents, Onslaughthttps://www.omnipotents.com/https://www.youtube.com/@AnonymousUT/videos/mlp/ has an active server with custom mods (pic related is the server menu), we just played a few hours ago, 3 hours nonstop:https://ponepaste.org/11301>>2244284Still not sure how to match soundpacks to models in the event they aren't bundled together - can anyone say if it just has to be a naming convention match?Yeah, you have to put the exact name of the voice pack in the character's uplCheck out the modpack from the /mlp/ server that I just posted above and look at the characters' .upl files and the names of the voice packs for referenceYou have to do it manuallyAt least if we're talking about the same thing: if you put a bot with x skin, it will play its corresponding voice packWhen you use it, you have to choose it manually; it doesn't change automatically when you change skinsAlso, you're using Paul Catalano's Voice Packager, right? It doesn't have much to do with what we're talking about, but I suggest you try it if you're not already using it because it's a very good tool
>>2253968Thanks for the response regarding soundpacks. I've never actually done the modding myself, always just putting together what I find on the unreal archive. So, no voice packager but I'll look into it because it's odd to have characters use the stock jump sounds.
Whats the best song that fits your style of AFPS fragging/gaming/movement whatever gets that zone going??https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yst_-HXWIm0https://youtu.be/7IzP5sRZ2T4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBCDiYFMD8sOr if you prefer fragmoviesWhats your top fragmovies that just motivates you launching the game again?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJNnrjy-B-chttps://youtu.be/_YceuXmeWrU
>>2253995I could never listen to music during FPS games because situational awareness is a huge factor in preventing ambushes or something like that. For frag movies, I prefer when they don't just go the DNB route and find something that they sync the clips to, no matter the genre. The best frag videos aren't the ones with the sickest highlights, but the ones that demonstrate how to mix media - with timing, cuts, and proper editing - and make it entertaining as a product and not just a montage.
Is it still worth it to start playing Quake Champions? Is it still playable with the low player count?
are old TF games allowed here?
>>2254009>I could never listen to music during FPS games because situational awareness is a huge factor in preventing ambushes or something like that.i like having music cuz i like flicking and making twitch shooters even more twitchy, its pretty funny when its obv im playing someone whos relying heavily on sound, and they make comments about it after game when i just have music on the entire time, win or losecan u link any fragmovies like that lol?
>>2254137>>2254186ya probably
>>2254226No, because I honestly haven't kept up with any frag videos since I was really into FPS games in the late 2000s to early 2010s. I'm just getting old and prefer comfy singleplayer stuff now. UT2004 is the only one I can't let go of because I picked it up after it was already dead and the AI is commendable. My drive has some old quake/tf2 videos on it but not the one I would want in this situation, which was a (very) good spy that set his to jazz. Too many search results.
>>2254326But I did also remind myself of thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1wLshtOWsg
>>2254009>and make it entertaining as a product and not just a montageThis is so true, i dislike the fight that people are just making clip dumps and calling it a frag movies, it is obviously not, and the jarring inconsistency of the clips having clearly different configs and resolutions
>>2254754fact*Oh well, also there's this website which is really cool https://www.igmdb.org/?page=search&game_id=36
>>2243926This is very late, but UT2004 has been activeThe discord is https://discord.gg/gKgujtmB (US)Pugs happen daily, there's a few active pub servers and there's seasonal tournaments.
>>2254326Oh ok lol
People wanted me to uninstall and some bird furry pretended to be someone from /vp/ and wanted to leak logs from other discords and all I have to say about that isWeird…
>>2243926UT99, 2k4, and 4 all have about 50 active players. Would recommend if you are looking for a more aim heavy game. The movement in the older games is not as good as quake, but I think the shooting is the best in all of FPS. Good mix of hitscan, projectile, and tracking. Even if you can't aim, you can get kills pretty easily with the flak cannon or rocket launcher. If you count all the games, I would guess there are about 500-1000 active AFPS players, but they are split across 10 games instead of two or three.
Play more Reflex Arena, AFPS gang
https://www.twitch.tv/agentjkezoor quake duel stream
anyone have favorite demos or pro matches?
Got UT99 recently for the first time, had some fun in a weekend lobby. Anything I should know or some better arena games? kinda wanna try some new stuff, bored of movement shooters and other crap.
>>2259812Try halo
>>2259812Arena shooters probably aren't your thing if you don't want "movement shooters", but you're better off with UT than Quake at least.
>>2259798there are many, but i always think of this moment, so coolhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3cNFs_aaP0
>>2263249In modern games you can't really guarantee this stuff because of all the brightness/gamma settings meant for different specs. Battlefield for example, I would get domed by a guy hiding behind a shrub because if you didn't use lower settings to disable foliage, you will never see his model crouched there. Building falls down and causes smoke cloud to allow for safe travel for your squad? Wrong, guy on custom .ini 'performance' config has smoke turned off and sees through half of it. I'm not sure if tournaments ever ask people to use a particular config on rented hardware because it conflicts with the accessibility.
>>2244056>XonoticI really liked that one
>>2232407When I retire, I'm going to go pro in UT4 and UT99. Mostly 1v1 and TDM.
chilling with the boomers getting life advice of quake live right now
>>2236706All those years of furious masturbation and look what it got you.
Looking for 2k4 map recommendations that aren't part of UCMP packs. Preferably for Onslaught or TDM, preferably really high effort.
GET THE BALL
Hey dudes I started a website to help everyone find out where and what to play. Its literally just a calendar but hey you don't need to have any sort of account or registration to know what FPS events are out there now. https://oldschoolfraggers.net/if you guys know of any regular fragfests please let me know and I will add them to the calendar.
Posting this here to get more new players.US UT2004 Community: https://discord.gg/kDGJUZ4XDnThe main gametype everyone plays is TAM, it's round based, you spawn with every weapon, there's a lot of voice comms and highly competitive. We just started Season 17 and signups close in a few weeks. Looking to get at least 64 players, currently at 40+ players.Pugs happen daily, we're linked in to other pub servers from gametypes. There's a download for the entire game + fixes included, so you don't really need to do anything besides download it to get started. We need fresh blood and don't mind helping newer players figure things out. All we ask is that you try and put in the effort because again, it's highly competitive. There are players from every skill level here, tournament winners to noobs that just installed the game. There's also an active mapping community that edits and makes maps for the community, if you're interested in a more active role with the community.
https://unrealarchive.org/unreal-tournament-2004/maps/vehicle-ctf/U/vctf-u4e-sterlingflood_5273575c.htmlWhat do I do with a ut4mod file to play it? I'm used to just extracting into Maps/Textures/etc
>>2243926Open Fortress plays a lot like Half Life 1, best modern arena shooter imo
bump
Slightly off-topic, but I think games like PixelGun3D and Combat Master have also taken a large part of the market. Halo is still pretty good, but made for consoles/controllers so the aiming is not a big deal. PG3D you spawn with 6 guns (1 melee) and there are a bunch of different game types.I have still mostly been playing UT99. I like aiming more than Quake. 2K4 I had to uninstall because I kept getting kicked from servers for not registering on their forums or Discord and did not feel like signing up for more shit just to play casually a few times a week.
>>2294070>Combat MasterLooks more like a CoD-style gamealthough I do appreciate fy_poolday being in one of those screenshots
>>2294070I won't participate in any community that requires a discord. I even have an account, I just don't want to be bothered into being present and get notifications and have to mute channels full of annoying shit when I'd rather play a fucking game instead. Nothing wrong with a voice overlay but seriously the kind of person that would require you to do something outside of the game just to be "in" can fuck off.
>>2294944Fine, remain alone you fucking faggot.
>>2236706I play a mod for UT2004 called kfmod. It's pretty fun.
>mfw it's a railgun map
>>2311061Why not play retail Killing Floor?
>>2232407>quadnanathere are only three bananas there, so it's actually a trinana
Quake III Arena is so dead that it's genuinely depressing. Every server is just like 30 bots not doing shit until you log in. Is Quake Live worth it? I've seen on steamdb that it gets like 500 players, but if those are bots too...
>>2316932There's usually a server of boomers playing, it's hella fun.
>>2316880Quad Damage only does triple damage.
Is there any easy way to get the workshop maps for QL to appear in the maplist with all the icons?I like fragging bots from time to time but it's annoying that 90% of my workshop downloads don't appear there. Also for bot matches where I can dump in a bunch of maps would CMPA or Warfork be a better alternative potentially?
>>2264555I don't know if they're “high effort” enough for you, but I like ONS_ToonCountry, ONS_Ascendancy and ONS_Glanum
>>2327414I will check them out thanks
Destiny 2 is dying but has an arena FPS kind of pvp mode, but it's a looter shooter too.I like destiny 2's gunplay and aiming but i wish more people played it
>>2327768Destiny 2 isn't an arena shooter and isn't relevant to this thread.
REFLEX IS FREE TO PLAY
>>2329428>1v1 arenaGod damn dropped instantly
>>2329733FFA and CTF have been popping alot lately
>>2330202What I meant to say was that I did all the trial stages and then saw "Final step: Matchmaking 1v1" which to me suggested it was the only thing you could do.
>>2330207in terms of ranked play, yeah thats all for now, but there's public servers and people have been using them instead of brainlessly using matchmaking, the discords active too to find some players,
Play Quake 3 CPMA and Reflex Arena
Checking out microvolts again, forgot it was still running. Will post my thoughts later today when I have time. As usual, if you are in EU there is a server with a decent amount of players. I need to fly to Europe for a video game vacation.
>>2327414Ascendancy > Glanum > ToonCountry ,the last is really nice visuals but Glanum makes the best assault (with Ballistic Vehicles+Weapons) because it's pretty fast paced and can go 50/50
Ballistic Minigun (the 3600 rpm one) is also kinda shit because it has a very long lasting barrel smoke that stacks on itself and rapes my FPS
https://www.twitch.tv/jerkidbtcome play reflex arena and stream snipe me if you want, ill be on that ladder in 30 mins
New Quake 3 praiseslop just dropped:https://youtu.be/kXDrlFotEpg
>>2340392Cool, thanks, hope to see this guy in the community more,
