I've lowered myself to just RPing with AI chatbots for the last few years, but want to RP with real people in a game.I tried a bunch of MMORPG's, but all seemed to be ass. Sharding killed any in Guild Wars and Elder Scrolls Online. Don't want to pay $15 a month just to talk to other players in WoW, plus the housing seems it will make it way more cliquey.I saw that there was a Rust World that was Game of Thrones as well as another Medieval focus, but both seem like they're long gone.Don't see anything in social games like VRChat or Gary's Mod (Harry Potter RP was fun before warner bros shut it down).Does everyone just RP on Discord now?I will probably look at AI Dungeons release of a online platform when it launches, but nothing else comes at the top of my head.Specifically looking for medieval, dark fantasy, or low fantasy, so GTA RP and Red Dead RP don't seem like they will scratch the itch, albeit that seems to be the only legit option.Am I missing something?
>>2266346>"I came in at the end, the best is over"Luckily I'm young and I've never played WoW or any MMORPG before so I really have nothing to compare it too. Planning to get into classic just to see how I like things.
>>2268901I'm glad I got out of them. They're a huge timesink for little gain. I always come out of them like gooning, thinking I just did this to pass the time/energy. I can play other games for 30 min to an hour and have a great time, whereas MMOs are designed to waste the highest amount of your time. In contrast, I could play a 16 hour day in an MMO and feel like I got nowhere and had 0 fun. With that said, classic WoW has some of the most fun leveling experience of MMO's. The endgame is ass grinding rep, repeating raids/dungeons, and your team failing the same BG mechanics 20 years later. If you do go with classic WoW, give Turtle WoW a look. It has a really solid culture of players. People in 'classic' servers end up wanting to relive 2004 but rush all the content, feel empty at the end, then restart the experience looking for the next hole to fill. With Turtle you can quit, come back years later, and continue with a constant influx of new players coming in to participate in the game. Plus just a much higher % of social players in my experience.
>>2268929The socializing and RP is a big part of my interest, similar to what's described in OP. I'll definitely try out turtle. With that being said, I'll play for awhile and see if I even enjoy the game to begin with. Playing retail is still on the back of my mind as well, the new Midnight expansion literally just dropped, like about 15 minutes ago
>>2266346>that imageThey partook of the milk, didn't they?
>>2268968Moon Guard is probably the best RP spot for a game using text. It's a bit cliquey. I'm worried that the housing may remove the third space of Stormwind/Goldshire and push people to instanced housing. If I had to rank for RP i'd go:Retail (Moon Guard)>Epsilon>Turtle>ClassicEpsilon is a private server that is only for RP. Beautiful hand made worlds too.
>>2266346Have you tried GachiERP in ESO?
>>2270948Did I get into the RP space at a bad time? Played a little of retail today and classic yesterday, was cool seeing the vas difference between the two.
>>2270957no what's that?I went to the spot in High Rock they claim is good for RP and it was mostly empty.>>2271142It's been a while since I tried Classic RP since I played back during OG classic in 2019, but the problem I found is when they are constantly advancing worlds to the new classic (tbc, wrath, etc), it doesn't allow a large organic rp populace to form.Turtle wow has been around for like 8 years now so its been able to foster a solid one, though nothing compares to Retail/Epsilon.Epsilon usually has a popular phase. Not sure what it is atm but in 2025 it was the Gilneas phase and it's a truly incredible world to see.Moon Guard though is always pumping but it's always going to be Stormwind/Goldshire with a few smaller areas like Darkshore/Gilneas.
>>2266346Since you've already been roleplaying with AI chatbots, there's this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqh9B7A-y_UIt's a multiplayer Morrowind roleplaying server using tes3mp, pretty small community but some fun people. It also has AI-powered NPCs so if no other players are online you can still wander the world and chat with the regular people you meet in the world, get quests from them, directions and rumours, all through the in-game chat.Admittedly the server has been a bit dead recently, you have to join their discord, and the owner is on holiday, but it might be worth you checking out
>>2270957KEKAROOOOOOOOOOO
>>2266346Idk, I think survival games are better for online roleplay. As gay as it is, roblox still has good shit but you'll feel like an unc if you're too old
>>2266346what you're describing you want fits the Neverwinter Nights persistent world called "Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist", assuming you genuinely enjoy roleplay more than gameplay because NWN gameplay is some jank, but that particular persistent world has great rules and foundations in place to make up for the jank.Surprised you never heard of it yet.
>>2266346Depending on your opinions for what is 'good', on Byond you have games such as ss13 (usually more round based), Meranthe (2d, combat and roleplay/story centric (the average RP post can go up to multiple paragraphs)), SL2, and a couple of others. Out of all of those I would advise Meranthe, it has its flaws but I've still never found a roleplay game quite like it.
