Your only "reward" for doing stuff is reducing negatives. You can be tired but not well rested. Your character can be sad but never happy. Tired but never energised or well rested. You can get fatigued and panicked but not get a spike in adrenaline.

You get no satisfaction for excess. Sitting in a dark basement eating cold canned goods puts your character in the same straits as living like a prince eating gourmet meals

There's some history there too that makes it even funnier. Baldur's Better Aesthetics and Wyll's of Torril were originally pretty simple mods that replaced ugly niggers and bizarre looking pink haired orcs with decent looking player heads; Wylls of Torill was a completely new head model for Wyll (token black party member) coming in just about every flavor of DnD ethnicity. Both got screamed at, deleted, and their contributors permanently banned from moddb and nexus by the troon brigade. Realms Restored, no alphabets, and even better romances was the ultimate response to that; mods which could only be made by a bunch of people deciding collectively to just steal the trannies work and use it as material to make the mods they actually wanted to make with it in their own space.
Troons seethe about them to this very day. I really do think the only way modding is going to heal is for parallel mod communities to appear like this. Balkanization can't come fast enough.

My longest lived character has dodged dozens of bites and the only thing that got him in every time was on the weak spots because call me tinfoil but after a while every bite just goes for the hands. Basically, Zomboid is a "Get good" / "Skill issue" kind of game.

Trapping:
Animals won't be interested in traps if a player gets near them. 70 tiles is the minimum distance to never disturb a trap. (Pic related for rough reference.)

Build the trap. Set the trap. Bait the trap.
Stick traps are the easiest to build and bait (Cricket, cockroach, grasshopper, worm) but give the smallest animals.
Read up on which bait works with which traps, it's pretty simple.
Some traps only work in certain biomes. Don't put the wrong trap in the wrong place or you won't get a thing. Overall, pretty basic, just a few boolean checks of "Am I retarded and trying to trap squirrels where literally zero squirrels are?"

Find shovel. Right click grass or dirt, dig a Furrow. Plant the seeds. Water the seeds regularly.
They might get plant diseases. You can craft treatments for these.

Yes, absolutely. However, finding bait is a huge limiting factor.
For Stick Traps, for example, you can set your Foraging to search for Insects with Search Focus and find the Crickets/roaches for 2-3 traps with relative ease.

For traps requiring crops (Rabbits like Carrots, for example) then you're limited by how many Carrots you can supply.
An area can have as many traps as you want and they'll all catch animals. Being able to bait them all is the main issue with trapmaxxing.

If I'm going a trapping character, i usually set up a foraging route to traps ~80 units away from base. Forage for bait out to the traps until I have enough, then for veg/fruit/whatever I need right now the rest of the way there and back.

If you're farming for the bait, then you probably don't need to do the foraging bit. Just drive to the traps and back, by setting traps some distance along the road where you drive in and out of your base. Hop out of the car, collect your sweet sweet loot and bait again on the way out, then again on the way back in.

they just have zero idea what to do about an endgame so they're putting all their effort into making the early game tedious and filled with enough monotony that you hopefully get bored and die before you get bored of the fact the game ends without setting your own goals
