Actually we used to have a project focused on moving the server to SS14, but the problem is that the person in charge of the project was ApotheoticOrder. He worked on it a little bit at the start and then fucked off to play Dota 2 without even talking to any of the people that were working on the project at the time.

The project was called /vg/station13.5 and it was going to be a clone of /vg/station13 with our sprites, our movements, our antags, and everything else.

we're at 0 pop for most of the day and that was before jungle and odyssey were added.
anyways most "lowpop" maps don't actually address issues that lowpop has, including the ones we've had for a while like waystation, which is mainly the fact that the game just doesn't work as intended with single digit pop. lots of gameplay content is locked behind other people doing their job, like you need people to set up power, mine resources, grow plants, move crates, and when there's a skeleton crew you have to tide in to do those things yourself, or otherwise just not do your job. don't people don't choose head roles either so they don't get the extra access from those jobs.
making the map smaller does make it a bit easier to tide around but also tends to reduce the starting resources on the station which quickly exacerbates the low pop issues and compounds the effects of breaches.
an actual lowpop map would have loosened access for most airlocks, and would maybe come with solars or some other power source partially set up already, with more starting tools and mats.

odyssey actually has some of this, most of the ship is accessible with 0 access, only like engineering, bridge, and cap's/hop's quarters have requirements, and the ship has extendable solars for power, but it is lacking a lot in starting resources, i assume we're supposed to get those from exploration. regardless, a map centered around planet exploration sounds like a novel idea, but is kinda ass in practice. aside from the frequently mentioned fact that a lot of jobs just aren't available, the small ship is way to vulnerable to explosions and half the crew tends to die from random hazards on the planet, which gives medbay a lot of work (that they can only heal using surgery) or forces an early shuttle call

I saw people talking about disablers vs tasers in the last thread and personally I think Lifeweb did these best. With there being tools and tactics to counter both (lifeweb has disablers AND tasers) that often only antags have. However they often only show up late into the round like breakers or they require setup and discarding subtlety like Thanati robes. You also have energy shields which are limited in scope, and force you into a dune style swordfight unless you both have syringe guns. Though you also don't have the admins breathing down your neck and enforcing arbitrary rules od engagement. If you want to murder a motherfucker you can. Taking people in is an optional bonus if you feel like it most times.

i agree with almost everything with your post. almost. i don't agree that the idea is ass in practice; more that the execution of the idea isn't the best. odyssey, as it stands now, has its flaws. you covered the primary ones already.
i think odyssey's largest problem as it stands is the fact that it tries to both be a lowpop and a highpop map without actually achieving that. part of that is fixed with very lax access on the ship, but the outpost's cargo bay still requires cargo access, and the outpost medical wing needs med access, etc. this creates a situation that encourages players to tide, regardless of how easily they can get around because they still can't do their job. maybe a good fix would to have a variable access system for the map: if it detects lowpop at roundstart, access rules are extremely lax; inversely, if it's highpop, standard access rules apply.
i want to say there's also a severe lack of emphasis on the outpost as well, but i'd have to play specifically as an outpost player for a few highpop rounds. i *do* know there's a medbay on the outpost itself, with a cloner and everything, so maybe part of the problem is the lack of knowledge on the part of the player?
that all said, i enjoy odyssey. if you're careful and with a few others that are careful, it can become lowpop kino. as many flaws as the map has, it solves one of the problems of lowpop: giving players something to do.

Appreciate the feedback; I'm definitely aware of the issues with varying pop levels and the shitty outpost. I've been working on phasing out the outpost and perfecting the map for low-pop in an upcoming PR; after that I'll look at ways to make it work better for high pop (may it be multiple ships, a bigger ship, or various sub-stations to accompany the ship where some jobs will be stationed in).
