4chan's Bizarre MMOdventure is an ongoing project from a group of anons dedicated to playing through dead MMOs.
>How does it work?
Hold a tournament-style voting contest from a list of games
Play the game that wins the final round of votes for 2 weeks
After each game, we alternate lists of MMOs to vote on
A guild photoshoot will take place every Saturday, check thread for pic times
New adventure starts every other Saturday, after the week 2 guild pic

Feel free to recommend more games to be added to the lists and to encourage people to vote on a game you want to play.

We have a couple with pre-established characters already.
Question is, what Ocean are we playing on?
>>
>>2469072
emerald, it's the most populated of the free oceans. the other you need to be subscribed to join
>>
>>2469072
Emerald is the only playable dubloon ocean. The others are either subscription or completely dead.

I have a character that can make the crew.
>>
how do you check which ocean youre on?
>>
I only like 2 out of the puzzles and all the others give me heartburn so I'll only be bilging and rumble/swordfighting
>>
>>2469132
When you go to character select screen it should say under it
>>
>>2469081
>>2469087
Would there even be players on subscriber oceans? Any game that has a subscriber only server is usually absolutely dead because by default the free to play server has more people and you wanna be where the most people are.
>>
>>2469135
Im glad someone will do bilging, I personally hate those puzzles. swordfighting is fun and I like sailing since its the most like tetris
>>
>>2469135
Its been a while but I remember liking rigging so I will be an absolute rigger
>>
>>2469135
Most people end up specializing in a puzzle because its easier to get good at one thing rather than all of them. I absolutely hate navigating and I can't do carpentry for the life of me but I love sailing. There will be a mix of rumble and swordfighting as we go.

>>2469141
There's some players on it but I don't know how many, it's not a lot though. Subscriber oceans don't work for this project though so it's disqualified from the start anyway.

The ship renames need to be approved by GMs and come with a lot of restrictions. It also costs Rogue Marks (which you can buy from other players) so we would need funds for that as well.

Made the crew. To join either send me a tell or when you make your character, click the notice board, go to the events tab and find an event happening on admiral island (there will be a lot) and whisk there. From there click the top right to access the map and go to the palace under government buildings, it'll be easy to meet up there.

I dunno if to use my old pirate from years ago or start anew. My old one doesn't have much but he has some proficiency skills which might help, thing is I need to relearn all the puzzles because I forgot.

Proficiency and experience don't make your score higher or lower or anything. It may make you start on more difficult puzzles though. You're fine to use your old pirate if you want or start a new one.

If this game has two weeks of content I'll be really surprised. This seems more like mini-game tier. I don't really think it'll be fun for me unless we can get a big group together again

>>2473933
This is why we need people to last minute rig.
Examples of other last minute rigs:
>Hellgate London
>Wakfu

Examples of non rig wins:
>Riders of Icarus
>>
>>2473926
Yeah its more of a social game than anything you'll find most people playing Poker or Dice or the Drinking games really.

There is some more challenging and varied stuff later on like Sea Monsters hunting, Expeditions which are basically their versions of dungeons, Boss Sword fights, Treasure Hunting etc. and of course pvp plundering But it's grindy to get there, having to find the maps that lead you there.
>>
>>2473958
Wakfu was really fun, hellgate is kinda whatever. Lobby based games are boring imo. I'm still surprised icarus ending up beating latale last minute
>>
Probably jumped the gun at doing a voyage this early, I felt a little thrust into the deep end and probably should have done the tutorial and first couple of missions first. It got easier once the boat was downscaled but pretty confusing at first.
>>
>>2473968
Generally whatevers in the lead never wins, second place always sneaks up. I also think people are looking for something other than generic weeb games at this point as they're a little samey at this point. Though I think it's been enough time that we can do another and it'll feel fresh.

Three shit games in a row.
>>

I just wanna play decent mmos man. Thought I was going to hate toontown but it was actually pretty fun. Iris online I thought it was going to be complete dogshit but it was okay enough(still kinda dog because server owner thinks a private server should be p2w as hell) on the other hand icarus which should have been good on paper was complete dogshit. Icarus was fun for all of 10 minutes, Hellgate was fun for like 2 hours before it got ultra repetitive. Puzzle pirates was fun for about 30 minutes. Honestly even bad games are funny when people show up but people just end up ghosting for 2 weeks and it basically puts the project on ice till the next vote
>>
>>2474140
Why we should stop putting meme games in the vote. I don't want to play Puzzle Pirates so I won't. And I probably won't want to play the next meme game someone rigs to win either.
>>
>>2474147
I think if people show up it can still be fun, it's that people vote these games and then they don't even play it. Besides showing up the Saturday pictures and that's a maybe. Then we're cucked for 2 weeks
>>
>>2474147
nigga these are all meme games
they're all shit that's why they're all dead
get over yourself
>>
>>2474076
Hellgate was fun, we had lots of anons playing daily
>>
PP is not a bad game, but it doesn't fit the scope of our project, game needs everyone to show up to be fun, if you miss the initial batch with all the anons getting a ship, sailing and parking, you are done, everything that remains is travelling with boring NPC shields since all the players have their shit parked in taverns nowadays.

The endgame content looks fun from what I gathered, but there is literally no way we can get there in 2 weeks, so the whole game feels wasted
>>
>>2474166
Some of us do i stuck with hellgate and that game got better the longer it went. I'll stick with puzzle pirates cause its unique then its back to tab target fantasy mmorpg number 446645 im sure. 30 minutes into a game you've barely gotten into it. I just fought vampires with another crew tonight. Id like the guild to also get ranked on it. Iris online and icarus both had guild rankings on their website we should try and get on those how cool would that be
>>
I entered the current date as the birth date when creating the character and now I can't play because I'm not old enough. Am I fucked?
>>
this is a lot harder than i expected
>>
>>2474140
You missed Wakfu!
>>
>>2474368
Exactly, we're not gonna be playing WoW classic or OSRS any time soon
>>
>>2474848
You can join mid-voyage at least, but yeah there's still sailing with other players in the mean time, just tell anons what ship you're on.

And you just join a ship that's doing the end game content, people are nice enough to let you join I did some treasure expeditions earlier.
>>
>>2474917
The first puzzle of the game
>>
>>2474368
A lot of them are good games that still died for some reason or another unrelated to their quality.
>>
>>2474166
>Besides showing up the Saturday pictures and that's a maybe.
Thats what some people are looking for hence why the games with the best character creators win. And the weeb games where they can make anime girls.
>>
>>2475399
>weeb games where they can make anime girls
nothing wrong with that as long as you're aren't trying to ERP with everyone like that one time
>>
>>2475061
late stage patching is one of the most frustrating things to play. I hope there are items to slow down the clock. I was getting masterful patch when it was early stage but later stages when it introduces bells and stop blocks and yarns that go in 3-4 different directions it becomes such a pain and the clock is only like 30 seconds for you to figure it all out
>>
>>2474166
Games like this tend to be popular with non mmodventure regulars and more popular with those in the /v/ thread because its nostalgia for them. Same happened with Toontown.

idk if i have the patience for this game. the puzzles are starting to make me really fucking mad. fucking bullshit ass swords cutting through my tetris even when im playing perfect. and you need a thesis on how to sail because how the fuck do you build combos on that when the blocks are affected by gravity. I cant do it anymore im done after 1 day

Brainlet
>>
>>2477305
>idk if i have the patience for this game. the puzzles are starting to make me really fucking mad. fucking bullshit ass swords cutting through my tetris even when im playing perfect.

It's the teaming system, if you notice during sword fighting, each person has dots next to their name, the dots signify who's targeting you when you hover over them. You have to do the same by clicking an enemy portrait. The way to win portraits is to gang up on them so they have multiple dots, as that introduces things such as the swords cutting through. The way to stop the swords is eliminate the one doing it to you.
>>
File: 7DQ4Zuv.png (307 KB, 559x747)
307 KB PNG
>>2477305
The swords are opponents attacking you. You're doing the same to them. When you clear a big block, you send a sword to the person you're targetting.

Gravity affecting sailing is how you make the combos in that. When you place the next double blue above those top two blues, they'll clear and drop the gold into the target, which gives you a double. You want to get all of your stuff to cascade into clearing other things.
>>
>>2477340
thus why i go by every iteration of tard
>>2477349
the thing about sailing is it seems it wants you to cascade blocks into other blocks so you get the double bonus to raise your sails. I do get that once you connect the 4 blues the yellows will be complete. if you get lucky and get all the colors you need right away your sails seemingly stay low even then because you didnt get any doubles. if you need a yellow/blue yellow/blue sometimes you get a white/blue i just cant process what to do in that instance because one part has what i need but the part is on top and the incorrect is on bottom

Puzzlepirates should be a thing we play during a minigame day...
>>
>>2477624
Agreed. This seems far more suited to a thing we go back to once in a while, for a single voyage, than a full 2 week thing.
>>
Honestly this game is pretty comfy. I can see myself relaxing on this every night for half an hour to an hour. Just sailing with bros. The thing is I dunno if it suits the project and will last 2 weeks. Seems more like a dip in and out and enjoying the comfiness sort of thing.
>>
>>2477717
Yeah, I don't think it's just a one time minigame night thing as some people are saying but it's also not a 12 hour a day for 2 weeks game. It's in a weird middle ground where you'd want to get a group together to do one big voyage each day and then chill with some poker or play another game.
>>
>>2477742
I like the idea of puzzle pirates as a reoccuring minigame. Not like the minigame choices are that meaningful anyway people usually leave after a hour or so. At least here we can do a voyage everytime. As a main game it's a nah from me
>>
>>2477742
Yeah I've found myself wanting to do one big voyage with you guys, then a public voyage with a bunch of others, then I'm done for the day.
>>
>>2477416
same anon. any class that requires me to use my brain is out of question. why you will see me role the warrior or knight in every mmo we play
>>2477624
didnt agree at first now I do though the game is nice it doesnt seem to have a lot to do for 2 weeks. no level up progression, no gear progression (only seems to affect looks). maybe ill hop on and voyage once a day like the other anon said

honestly playing this though really makes me want to play pirates of the caribbean online. too bad the only maximum ship on there is 6. they have a pretty active pserver community though

My summary so far, to elaborate on the stuff said in the /v/ thread:
>It seems more like a social hangout game than an actual MMO
>Not that its a bad thing, its good at what it does in that I socialized a lot but the gameplay aspect seems a little lacking
>Its at its most fun when all of us are online, on a voyage and sailin the high scene, and beating other ships
>Its fun but not as fun when I'm on random voyages jobbing for other ships, they do have more access to the deeper content like the expeditions and lairs and stuff. Which we're still grinding towards. So doing those was fun.
>Its at its least fun when I'm doing shit alone, just repetitive navy missions or like lurking around wondering what to do.
>>
>>2478154
Also other things:
>Community seems very nice, they are chatty and even when on islands, you'll stumble upon people playing poker or doing sword fight tournaments in the pub, and they'll include you.
>The puzzle stuff all seems secondary really. Like even doing them on voyages yes it helps your ship and makes the bars go up but it doesnt even seem too needed, once the speed bar is full you can chill
>Stuff like carpentry/patching seems only important post-combat
>I think theres needs to be more emphasis on why I'm doing these puzzles and whats important about them, how am I progressing etc? Is there even progression
>I think thats why Brawling and Sword fighting seem so important, because you beat other ships with it and get rewards.
>>
>>2478099
you start at higher difficulty levels instead of having to work your way up to them I believe
>>
>>2478067
I am almost certain we played a game just like this way back in the day with miniature pirate ships and the like.

Maybe Uncharted Waters Online? That sounds piratey.
>>
There is no fucking way. Also, is equipment cosmetic only? or does it gives you stats that matters?
>>
>>2478067
pirates of the caribbean online would be really fun to play again and the maximum number of a crew is 12 not 6, but what we could do is run multiple ships on the same sea together and just blow everyone away. ships were costly when POTC was online though so idk if its changed with the pserver
>>
>>2478376
There was that but there was another Koreaslop MMO where you did grinding on land to increase your land level and then did grinding on the water in a miniature ship to increase your sailing level.

Now that I describe it, it sounds like uncharted waters , but I assure you it's not. It was one of the last MMOs I ever saw on MMOHut, let me see if I can find screenshots of it.
>>
>>2478449
Only swords matter everything else is cosmetic.
>>
>>2478500
Again? Damn was it done before? You guys sure do like your pirates.
>>
>>2478517
Oh I think I know exactly what you're talking about because I remember that Worst MMO Ever Youtube series doing a video on it.

I hope to join in for one. I just have a feeling it will be one ive actually played, though probably not in years.
>>
Also, how are these threads so fast? usually things i take interest in especially on smaller boards are near dead at times. I thought MMOs were dead too or people basically just gravitate to WoW and other threads and don't have time for shit like this
I guess thats what you call a community.
>>
>>2478607
Thats the case for a lot of them for some of us anyways.
>>
>>2478617
they're slow as shit man, they get a small burst of actibity when a new game starts but otherwise its pretty quiet
mmos outside of the few big ones are kinda dead but there's a ton of people who crave for games that aren't those since they're stale as fuck at this point
>>
>>2478542
That's the one
Add it to the pile
>>

Don't forget you need to pay the dubloon delivery fee if you didn't factor that in already. You can also buy clothes off of racks in the shops that is already premade but you won't get to pick the colour and it may be pre-worn.
>>
>>2478697
We played it already, it was a terrible disaster

just found this thread through your crew description and recognised it as a general, don't browse this board but i play ypp actively thought i'd drop in. would be funny if you guys caded an island or ran a sea monster hunt
>>
>>2481757
I think a sea monster hunt is not out of the cards, but a barricade is, people won't be around long enough to even be able to get ships to contribute.
>>
Gonna play this gay ass old crusty pirate gayme right now
>>
My first time navigating ended up with 2 wins and 3 losses and the boat rapidly sinking as we just made it to our destination.
Nailed it.
>>
>>2481757
>>2481799
You gotta get the badges for it, but the grind for them doesnt seem too hard. One or two voyages and some trinket sales.
>>
>>2481853
That victory at the end, despite the ship falling apart while half-sunk, was very satisfying.
>>
>>2481884
Sword fighting was the two wins and brawling were the three losses too so I definitely think we're better at sword fighting. Next time I'm gonna make it pursue Brigands only.

We're on the medium boat right now.
>>
Thankfully getting dubloons is really easy and not too grindy in this game. So I'm buying a ton of badges, will buy the tradeable ones.

I think sea monster hunting will be possible for sure.

atlantis is kind of hard right now and you need to know how to battle nav it properly - it's also gatekept by the ""top"" flags of the ocean (because it produces so much money) so good chance if you attempt atlantis they'll try to fuck you over

haunted seas is easier but you need a war brig at least, might need to rely on randoms

cursed isles you should probably run it with a sloop, need to be good @ ship puzzles though and have a good battle navigator - also you should be at least decent at foraging if you want good loot.

for those who don't know also, you /can/ sink in sea monster hunts, and your ship goes into a bottle and you need to pay pretty much full price to repair it

>>2481893
you can hold the button to create a "charged" version of the colour which will not pop the colour on 3+ - to create combos like swordfighting you need to stack them and pop multiple at once to send punches to the opponent

also i'd suggest you guys do /global-on and /trade-on to enable global and trade chats if you haven't already - might be helpful to buy cheap second hand ships, clothing, maps or whatever else you guys are looking for
>>
>average voyage
>get a named NPC
>bnav sucks nut and they end up half way across the map and ragequit
god damn, wasted like 45 mintues so far out of 5 hours playing, this is awful.
I can even forgive you retards cause you're new but god damn trying to get some cash and these people are ASS.

Is there advice for how to do the puzzles?
It feels like the different games have different methods of success. I never seem to get above fine at anything but bilging, no matter how well I do.
>>
>>2482305
The metric is weighted to the entire ocean. What is a "Fine" now could easily have been "Excellent" when the game was newer.
You're probably doing a decent job but the game is old and people have become very good at the puzzles.
Also there's been many bots over the years that have skewed everything further.
>>
>>2482336
I thought the weighting was only for the RANKS on the skills, not the performance itself?
If it is, that makes more sense I guess. Still feels like shit.
>>
>>2482342
The performance has been affected for sure.
Just focusing on 3x3 breaks in bilging used to get me Excellent/Incredible consistently but now it struggles just to get the indicator to yellow.
But if I do a single decent sea-donkey its shining for 5 minutes straight.
So it's possible they changed how scoring works for bilging.
But my opinion is that it's generally much harder to hit Excellent (for any puzzle) than it used to be.
The color indicator is accurate to what performance you'll get.

As for advice, you're probably better off trying to master a single puzzle. Videos go a long way.
>>
>>2482358
is the meta still to get to sparkle/shine and then afk till it drops?

*notices bilge* uwu what's this
>>
>>2482377
Probably
>>
>>2482358
Doing 3x3 still can get you excel incredible but the rule of thumb is if it takes more than 3 moves to get a 3x3, 4 moves for bingo 5 for donkey, 6 for I forget the final reward after donkey
>>
>>2482505
It's likely that I'm just a lot more shit now than I think :^)
>>
>>2482509
My bad in my wording. 3 moves or less for a 3x3 4-5 for a bingo, 5-6 for a donkey. Strive for the least amount of moves possible working from the bottom of the board up.
>>
I'm starting to like this more, its quite addictive.
>>
>>2482525
Why bottom up? Don't you have a higher chance to see a combo if you go from the top down? e.g. if you clear a 3-long horizontal line in the bottom row, you move 3 blocks to new positions (the 3 new blocks coming in to replace the ones you cleared). If you cleared at same line in the row second from the bottom, you'd move 6 blocks to new positions (the three new ones and the three that need to move up to fill the gap you left). More blocks in new positions = more chances for combos, right?
>>
Feels like Sailing/Rigging are the only ship puzzles it matters to tryhard at, bilge and damage seems to always be at 0 as long as the station is manned at all even if the guy there is getting "booched".
>>
>>2482631
Pretty much.
You gotta do Nav/Sail/Rigging to get full speed, once you're at full speed you can chill. Patch, Carp and Bilge don't matter if its empty. Only if you wanna level them.
When you're in battle all of them matter as they contribute to how much the ship can move in battle.
Post battle, you gotta patch/carp until the red bar goes down, to reduce damage, and bilge until the blue bar goes down to prevent sinkage. Then once it's down it's all good.
>>
>>2482574
It's easier to set yourself up for donkey and vegas higher up
>>
>>2482651
>not tryharding so hard you mald even when the bar is full and you arent very good
It's like you dont even care
>>
>>2482651
Carpentry and Patching shine during pvp and BAKA/Cursed Isle runs other than that they can definitely be slacked off on.

No idea what that game is, but as someone working on Dragon's Dogma Online's server project, record as much gameplay footage and capture as much network traffic as you conceivably can. Back up client files and archive wikis. Even a little bit of this stuff goes a long way and anyone wanting to do a private server will tear their hair out over the shit they forgot to archive.

I forget when you guys did DDON, but know that our development has been a little slow since last October or so. Both me and the other main dev have had a combination of life stuff and burnout, so we're stalled at Episode 3.1 (live service ended at 3.4). I dunno if you guys played enough to get to that point, though.

why?
the only things i remember were the towns being incredibly large and empty
generic quests
generic combat

>>
>>2489391
to me it was a proof of concept that returning to simple mechanics =! bad. the game had quests, yes, but they didn't hold your hand and you had to explore the world to get that bear ass. healing items were sparse so you had to take things slow and sit to heal. monsters were tough and aggro high so party play was pretty much a requirement. deathballing the map as a full party was kino. couple that with an effortful world and consistent art direction, decent music and a completely different worldmap and you have a surprisingly memorable experience.
>>
>>2489391
Granted the way we were received by the server owners/mods was extremely memorable, but a lot of it was venturing into this unknown title that had practically no information about it on the internet. It could've been absolute dogshit but it surprisingly got A LOT of things right, even if it was somewhat generic..
- The pacing was perfect in my opinion, not too many sidequests flooding your log, many that could be done in the same cluster area.
- Combat/Latency felt decently responsive and involved, decent balance where it never felt like a slog nor a cakewalk.
- The setting and monster design was super cozy too, felt like a proper medieval fantasy world.
- Class fantasy was on point, had enough agency with putting stats/skills on your character even if the builds were pretty straight-forwards.
- Allowed for goating, and had the perfect amount of kino jank for us to break the game out of bounds.
- Intuitive UI / Menuing with stylish design to it. A lot of it reminded me of the MMO vidya you see represented in anime, but I never played a game prior to this one that looked or felt that way.
Pretty old title too, likely not very high budget either, so I at least was very appreciative of how cohesive it all felt.
That said, I don't know how good of a revisit it'd be since we've already sort of seen it all. It'd definitely be a great one for newer people to experience for a first time, but I imagine some of us would be spoiling it by spoonfeeding its quirks to them.

Questing being lethal goes a long way to making a boring grind more interesting. In modern games you could afk for 30 minutes while a monster hits you and still come back and kill it.

it looks like the game launched around 2004 in Asia as Hercott, finally coming to US/EU in 2005 as Ferentus. it was advertised as some lineage clone with large scale PvP but the MMOd never got to that understandably. https://wiki.fhxrestoration.com/Servers_and_players
>>2489626
I wouldn't mind replaying the questline simply for how enjoyable I found it. other than a bit of goating, this was one of the titles enigmatic enough that a lot of it still remains unsolved, especially the mid-lategame and pvp aspects.
>>2489806
yeah it definitely adds some depth with positioning and utilizing ranged/tankier classes for pulls. having a healer is extremely useful here. just basic nice things like giving classes proper roles.

RaiderZ might be kind of a hard sell for the old guard, since progression in that one is incredibly linear. Once you've been through the leveling climb once, you've seen most of what there is to see.
That said, unlike other linear themeparks we've played, RaiderZ is heavily focused on party-play, which tends to be more enjoyable compared to just soloing together for two weeks. Plus we only ever gave RaiderZ Global a shot, and there IS that other server - Raiderz Revolution - featuring a faster leveling curve and content which otherwise went unfinished on the original client.
Could be cool to give that second server a look, although since it wouldn't be a truly "Classic" experience, newcomers might not get the same sort of vibe with it that we did back in the day. Christ alive, has it seriously been nearly two full years since RaiderZ saved us from RF-Banana Hell? Insane.
>>
>>2490182
SWG is a sandbox, they just drop you in and tell you to fuck off.
There's no character levels, you just get a limited amount of skill points you can spend in different skill trees that progress independently, so to unlock more shooting skills you need to shoot things etc.
The most fun part was running around in a party at the start doing low reward missions and dying to shitty mobs. Then we discovered that locals give out free giga buffs in cantinas that let you (almost) solo the hardest missions.
If you want to become a jedi or a sith there's a questline to follow that takes 6+ days because some of the Dathomir quests rotate in 3 day intervals and you need to do 4 of them. Only 2 of us became jedi in two weeks. When NPCs or player chars see you using force powers or lightsabers in the open you gain notoriety (or infamy, or something like), a hidden stat. When you get a certain amount you get a bounty placed on you and bounty hunters can kill you to claim it. And locals genuinely go for that, we had a jedi duel during the final pics and a local drove all the way to Weeabog just to blast Hillary.
I personally enjoyed SWG a lot, it's something different in a sea of WoWslop
>>
>>2491313
Sounds really fun but it may be the kind of fun that's hard to reproduce on revisit like in Emil Chronicle on the last anniversary.

>>
>>2491313
It depends on the version of SWG though. Theres Pre-CU SWG where you couldn't be a Jedi at all. Post-CU SWG which is what you describe, and NGE SWG where you could just seelct it.

Thats why SWG is such a good choice for a replay IMO. Because we don't even have to go back to the server we chose, we could choose another server that hosts a different version of the game and have a different experience. As NGE is very different from vanilla. NGE was their attempt to WoWify SWG.
>>
>>2491623

I think it will struggle to get votes from the new guard if anything since not that many have played it, but its the closest thing to Tera we are probably going to play again.

>>
I'm gonna assume the reason Warhammer is in the lead is because a lot of people who are voting for it were people who weren't around when we played it. Seeing as how it wasn't well received at all it confuses me as to why people would wanna play it again.
>>
>>2491718
did everyone roll on the same faction? that should be a set rule if warhammer wins
>>
>>2491868
The mythos surrounding some titles can really skew perceptions of their actual quality.
The only time Warhammer Online ever comes up in conversation on other boards is through reminiscence of narrowly-won PvP matches and large-scale battles, largely during its first year on the market when it was still a fresh and direct competitor to Wrath-era WoW. Solely the rosy highlights, despite the underlying game being rather flawed. Fun, sure, but clearly flawed.
A similar sort of MMO mythologizing tends to surround Wildstar as well, despite it too having a fairly rocky reception all throughout its short-lived run.
>>
So what do I vote for? I wasn't there for these games.
>>
>>2491911
>A similar sort of MMO mythologizing tends to surround Wildstar as well
Whenever Wildstar is mentioned, I immediately remember 1) The reddit-tier humor backed by Nerd Corps-esque animation, and 2) That image with the ludicrously long attunement quest
>>
>>2491954
Vote for what someone shills to you, like SWG. We must have another bog.
>>
>>2491911
>>2491962
A lot of the Wildstar mythology comes from it being an NCSoft game and being part of the "viciously killed by NCSoft" club. A lot of those games are martyred and have a reputation in the MMO community as hidden gems that were unfairly culled, such as City of Heroes. So Wildstar's in that camp and its reputation as an under rated MMO grew. I think Tabula Rasa was the start of it all in terms of "NCSoft kills hidden gems"

Tabula Rasa, like The Matrix Online, is one of those games I only known of through after-the-fact wiki articles that give you the impression of being these mindblowing epic games you missed... Then you see actual gameplay and that picture you made through tooltips and guides alone slowly crumbles.
>>
>>2492522
As anon said earlier, it's gotta be ACE. MU was also super low player count, but ACE was rock bottom. I think Tale of Pirates had a low turnup too? It had some installation issues iirc. I might forgetting some others.
>>
>>2492096
>>2492549
NCSoft being this evil company that kills amazing kino MMOs that would have changed the industry is pretty much a fabrication created by the users of those dead MMOs who are salty.

Yes NCSoft is very corporate and is very focused on numbers, graphs, line goes up etc. But they don't just kill games for shits and giggles. If a game was killed its because it wasn't making any money.

Tabula Rasa was killed because everyone overhyped it because it was a Lord British MMO, and it was never ever gonna live up to the hype, so it hemmoraged subscribers due to being a "disappointment" and they only killed it because it stopped making a profit. People always say they never gave Tabula Rasa a chance and killed it quick, but thats because it was a massive money drain and was spiralling further down. It stopped making a profit THAT quickly.

City of Heroes was a success for years but by the time NCSoft closed it, it was an old MMO from a bygone age. It was a different era of MMOs in the early 2010s and CoH was showing its datedness. NCSoft have even defended themselves from this one by saying they gave CoH a lot of chances once it stopped making a profit. They tried to launch a Korean version, but Korea didn't take it, then they made CoH free to play and that caused it to start to breaking even and making minor profits, but nothing substancial. So they decided to have the team start making CoH 2 so there's a more modern MMO, but the cost for it was insane. So they shelved CoH.

Wildstar never caught on. It simply didn't have the playerbase.

So yeah, I think the narrative of NCSoft being this MMO butcher is largely untrue. Also Tabula Rasa died during a time when the MMO space was massively over saturated, felt like every licensed property had an MMO and people were sick of them. They were dying left right and center, except the ones that wised up and went free to play and ditched the subscriber model that was common at the time.
>>
>>2492742
>Tabula Rasa died during a time when the MMO space was massively over saturated
Yeah the mid to late 2000s were a brutal time for MMOs. Western MMOs were coming out every four months, and competing for attention with eastern MMOs, some of which had far more mature patch/content pipelines than the fledgling western ones. NCSoft alone published Lineage 2, COH, Guild Wars, Auto Assault (lol), Dungeon Runners (lmao), Tabula Rasa, and Aion, all within six years. Nexon published MapleStory, Mabinogi, DFO, Elsword, and Vindictus in roughly the same period.

Although I suppose in the context of the failures like Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault, the hit rate is actually pretty good. Lasting longer than a year or two in such a crowded market was a major success.

>If a game was killed its because it wasn't making any money.
i'm gonna be honest with you, and i'm gonna talk more generally because there's an occasional "BUT EVERY MMO IS SHIT" post whenever someone calls out a living game for being a money sink:

please stop using a failed monetization as a demerit for a shut-down MMO. the active games that have solid monetization end up being FAR fucking worse in my eyes.

we just voted in a game where literally everything you see and acquire will crumble to dust in 30 days or less.

i didn't mention it during the Haven and Hearth discussion, but that game has a monthly subscription to your inventory being the right size to do anything useful

if you don't have the energy to talk about the GAMEPLAY of a dead GAME, at least reserve your autism about a game's business sense for the games that are still actively trying to fuck you. I don't wanna hear about how wildstar could've stayed alive if only it had a durability mechanic for its horse armor. I could just play Puzzle Pirates.
>>
>>2490482
It was fun, there are faction battles that run 24/7 you can join. A level 1-15 version and a 16+ one. Since we only have a week I would suggest people just stay under 16 or keep remaking to stay in the low level group. You get placed in the general pop battles at 16 with the veterans and your stats scale to them to make it fair but that depends on how BiS your gear is for your current level. Theres a lot of players who just stay in that low group cause it's easier to have fun. I'll do that myself if it wins.
>>

>>
>>2493338
It's ace for sure. The rigging was undeniable at that point and ace won due to a last minute coin-flip, half the people couldn't run it, and the game itself was incredibly repetitive.
>>
>>2493330
is max level not fun? I thought we could get to do some dungeons and raids too but thats if people stick with the game, also is it only going to last a week and not the usual 2 weeks? we also should probably all go onto the same faction (maybe order) to balance it out and make sure players arent playing on their own
>>
>>2493451
The anniversary games just last one week each. When there are factions we always vote before we start on which side we play. We chose Chaos last time because this is 4chan, why would we pick Order? I enjoyed it when I played it the first time. The scenarios, dungeons and raids were fun when you weren't sieging a front door for an hour. Since I already played it once I figured I would just stick to the low level raids to not get so invested, but yeah max level stuff is fun and the dungeons are nice but nobody got close to max after 2 weeks and its more gear dependent the farther you get which there won't be a whole lot of time to grind for. ECO revisit did have less activity than the first time cause the progression is a bit slow in that game but PSU revisit was pretty good, its an easy game to jump into and quick to advance.
>>
>>2493256
why lie?
>>
>>2493525
because chaos is the most popular faction according to their website and in desperate need of order. id prefer chaos myself but its more of a faction balance thing. didnt know the anniversary week was only 1 week though. would there be a better game for us to vote for to see more of in just a weeks time?
>>
>>2493590

I would just say vote for what you want. I voted for raiderz and dragon dogma. Missed RaiderZ but was told it was the group favorite. Played DDO and liked it quite a bit, in fact I played it for a while after just to progress. Both of these games prioritize party play over solo which I would say WAR does as well. Dragons nest is a solid choice too.
>>
>>2493613
I think picking Order this time would be fun, if it wins
>>
Would you have time to do anything in Uncharted Waters in one week? I haven't played it but people said it was very slow. I've always wanted to try it though.
>>
Shouldn't we space our revisits a bit? Like play one week of a revisited game, then two weeks of a new MMO and then one week of the second revisit or something like that.
Does it really make sense to play them back to back?
Why even play two games? Or why revisit once a year? We can do it every 6 months for one week if we want.
I remember getting kinda burnt out by PSU last year.
>>
>>2494577
Revisits are put into two-week blocks so the game voting cycle can continue uninterrupted. I guess the other way to do it could be to have a full two weeks dedicated for one game revisit and maybe another later in the year. Might be too many revisits, I don't know.
>>
>>2494686
I guess it's not a big deal, just feels suboptimal to me.

>No votes for Flyff
Kind of understandable, as the server we previously played on (and many which were around at the time) went under a good while ago. Plus the game became a somewhat divisive pick, even if it worked well as a semi-mindless grinder (provided you're playing with considerably high rates).

>No votes for Ferentus
Also understandable, as Ferentus absolutely thrived on its sheer obscurity, and that bell can really only be rung once. Plus it looks very unassuming to anyone who hadn't already played it, even if it remains one of the most unexpectedly surreal and memorable titles we've played thus far.

>No votes for Dragon Nest
Genuinely surprised, considering DN was one of the most popular titles sampled throughout this project. You'd think it would've been an easy first or second-ballot pick, similar to ECO during the first anniversary.

a whole paragraph of "MMOs are dying and NCSoft is justified" just reads as more money whining to me. I'm not sure where you said to stop money whining considering it was the entire post.

I don't care what NCSoft thinks about the games it killed. I am the end user. This thread is all end users. Talk about things the end user would experience.
>>
>>2494776
>Dragon Nest
While I like the anti-kgrind sentiment around private servers for Nexon games, they remain Nexon games. I doubt we've left any stones untouched in there.

I'd shill one of the older-generation pservers for Mabinogi if they did more to skip your outright slavery to life skills for base stats, for instance, but even with 4-8x skill EXP, you'll still suffer.
>>
>>2496399
The end user experiences the game dying lol lmao.
>>
>>2496474
Usually not with a decent MMO, though. Having enough material to develop a private server is pretty common, and laws are coming into place to shift the industry opinion of sunsetting games, so we'll also see more devs leaking / releasing server binaries for failed products as time goes on.

To keep it on topic though, if a game is a candidate for this thread, you can play it. It doesn't matter if it died once. To that end, talk about its gameplay, because its financials aren't relevant.
>>
>>2496521
MMO gameplay often revolves around monetization, a lot of the gameplay elements and design decisions can be summarized as being a result of someone thinking it would make money, I don't see how it's not relevant to discuss why the games died but whatever. nta who started this discussion btw.
>>
What do you consider an MMO?

Does it require a certain amount of players? IE above 100/1k/10k/etc players?
Is it the amount of players per zone? Some games are lobby based so you'll see 100s of people in the lobby but when you load in it's only 4 people.
Is it persistence? Does the world need to exist for 24+ hours/weeks/months/etc?

I've been thinking about it but I don't really know what would define an mmo other than the capability for a lot of people to connect and interact, but there's persistent ss13 servers that could have 100+ people connect but I wouldn't usually consider ss13 an mmo.
>>
>>2496839
persistent long term world with server size in the thousands
it can be a hub game with a party size of 4 where you can never play with more than 4 people as long as you can meet hundreds of people in the hub imo

some people take it literally, and think the actual gameplay has to be massively multiplayer so shit like 100v100, gvg/wvw pvp etc, but we all know those games are few and far between.
>>
>>2496839
we recently played a lobby game (hellgate online) and everyone seemed to enjoy that. what makes something an mmo is probably group content. of course you can always play by yourself but playing with others to knock out quests is faster and a lot easier most of the time
>>
>>2496581
Because refusing to talk about how a game would feel to play right now and diluting the thread with unrelated garbage is a factor in how we voted in Eggman's Mean Bean Machine with a money burning contest attached to it.

Monetization's an important topic when a game that qualifies here is still alive, because any "dead game" still being successfully run by its publisher is absolutely just there to make you suffer needlessly until you start paying money for asspats.

It is not an important topic when it's dead, because anyone maintaining its corpse will have taken steps to give you the experience of a paying player at minimum.

Iris switched out its cash shop currency 1:1 for vote points. PSO2, whenever its private server dev decides to spool up, will either not have a cosmetic gacha or won't charge you real money to pull on it. Toontown was a subscription game outright.

We can play all of them, and we can talk about how they feel to play in 2026. Who cares how they died? Go post your "what went wrong?" threads on /v/ if you want to jack off over this, but stop suggesting online casinos and going "b-but every MMO sucks and charges you money!!!1" when I'd rather go somewhere with substance that happened to fail to trap you personally into the skinner box while it was alive.

>>2496839
I think the label is pretty loose and has been since its inception, honestly, but if I had to constrict it, yeah, lack of a main lobby and a persistent main game fit
>the "main area" cannot be a lobby that you are alone in and return to after doing all content, i.e. your orbiter in warframe
>you can instance harder content, but most of the game should hold an arbitrary amount of people and be drop-in
i would consider a persistent SS13 server an attempt at making SS13 fit the format of an MMO. i'd consider it closer to Rust, which i don't think even has a label now that we're thinking about it, if that server has weekly or monthly resets.
>>
>>2496929
>Iris switched out its cash shop currency 1:1 for vote points.
No, it didn't. The private server for Iris Online was very pay2win. Private servers are pay2win perhaps more often than not, just not as badly as official ones.
>>
>>2496929
how is it unrelated? most of the servers we play on still have monetization attached
dragon nest for example, was pretty well liked, but that server was still objectively an "online casino" where you could spend real money to get gold to gamble for more upgrades.
>>
>>2497001
NoScrubs seemed fine to me. It had larger prices on cosmetics, but the actual meat options (teleporters, boosts, etc) were all affordable with a day of vote points at a time. What was the outlier?

>>2497002
I didn't play Dragon Nest, so I didn't see what became of it. What's it have?

If a private server is gouging people too, yeah, air it out. It'd be pretty shitty to vote for something that was outright awful.
>>
>>2496414
>Mabinogi
it would be so comfy to chill out in groups and play stupid ass music or run low level dungeons with a bunch of fat retarded lolis
>>
>>2497018
There was an entire currency that was paid-only and allowed you to purchase gear you otherwise couldn't get, as well as better versions of everything the voting one let you. It was also mandatory for the pet system and made upgrading far more manageable.
>>
>>2497018
dragon nest origins basically just had the original enhancement systems and gear systems, they removed all the superfluous p2w items from the cash shop, but you could still essentially legally RMT to buy them through the ingame market, and they were still required to upgrade your gear to the max, it's just obfuscated enough for people to not question it.
>>
>>2496839
mmorpgs are rpgs with massive amounts of players, technically. but i think a GOOD, community focused mmo should have minimal instancing. people should be on servers with generally the same people for the majority of their playtime. that's how familiarity happens and organic community forms. this can be achieved by locking characters to servers (xiv/wow), or by having numbered servers with dedicated purposes (like osrs). by over-instancing your zones, you basically ensure that everyone stays strangers unless they go out looking for friends somewhere else. so while i consider lobby-based mmos like pso to still technically be mmorpgs, i see the lobby-based gameplay as a negative, and a limitation of technology back then. i don't really consider a modern lobby game like destiny to be an mmo, nor do i see an overly instanced rpg like diablo 4 to be an mmo. these games are simply multiplayer imo.
>>
>>2497164
I think lobby games have the effect you're describing though, the smaller shared world inbetween gameplay leads to a lot more hanging out and socializing, even if they have channels, people will just randomly choose a home channel most of the time, assuming you actually can choose the channel anyway, that part is important and a lot of modern games get rid of it so you're truly just unable to form any connections that way.

To be fair the game sucks balls at telling you this and the tutorial is bare bones then just throws you to the wolves. I know thats very classic for a pre-WoW MMO but it does mean that you're reliant on the community to learn stuff. I really liked Perpetuum and Eldevin. Eldevin was an awful quest2cap slog but the game had a lot of charm and I liked making my own build. Perpetuum was just fun.

Iris was probably the best generic tab target MMO I've played, you could animation cancel out of every skill and chain it into another skill so it was very actiony.

>>2489245
Not sure what context you're asking this in, Ferrentus was an absolute hidden gem though, if that's what you mean. If you mean games we've played that people have kind of put past them but deserve being mentioned more... Maybe Requiem, Allods, or Age of Conan: Unchained.
>Requiem
F2P Korean Post-Wow derrivative MMO. Still, graphics/aesthetics holds up. Even has ragdoll physics for maximum edge. Functional jump, nice setting with (few) buildings and other spots to explore. Cool monster designs. Skill progresion / char customization is a bit shit, but it's alright. Very unique style.
>Allods
Yep, it's a WoW clone in the most literal sense. Still, impressive amount of polish in that one, and I personally felt far more engaged in customizing my character via the talent/passive grid system thing than I did in WoW back in the day. Kino setting, walking through Ruskie Commie Azeroth, with posters and food markets? Peak sovl.
>Age of Conan: Unchained
Surprising quality again. Then again, was a paid(subscription?) title and was competing against titans at the time so it lacks a bit comparatively. Character movement and zone progression felt alright. The settings can be quite breathtaking, there's one major town that's ingrained in my head still. Combat is a bit clunky, but I give them truckloads of points for trying to innovate on the tab targetting stuff with DDR-style inputs for combos. Class fantasy is pretty awesome as well. Main downside on this one is the aesthetics on gear looking consistently shit. They kinda fumbled with the type of stuff they could've added drawing from Conan's repertoire...

Mentoring so anyone could group up with anyone else no matter the level and still feel like they were contributing and multiple public zone events, lead to us always doing stuff as a group. Probably the best player housing in any mmo, and the game just had a really nice vibe to it in my opinion.
Yeah I still log into it.

2nd Anniversary Revisit Finals is up.

What happens with server choice if Dark Ages wins?

>>2510149
>>2510169
Yeah since our last visit, someone put out a video that went viral and bumped Dark Ages popularity. It was a while ago so numbers have dwindled, but not to what they originally were. So now there's a more active live server and more choice for private servers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIFty-O4rOE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zNtATsb5eg

Its an interesting watch and part of why I voted for Dark Ages, to see how the popularity bump may have changed things.

throwing my hat in for Uncharted Waters Online.
if I could describe it succinctly, it's one of those once-of-a-kind jMMOs with a bunch of mechanics and systems lending towards discovery. iirc there's 3 main types of progression; battle, adventure and trading. battles play like FFXII but online (where it belongs), and adventuring has some involved coordinate hunting. for trading, you go to various countries and sail goods between them. sailing was peak comfy with a squad of 5 guildies while listening to the fantastic OST and the sound design was also exceptional.
it's one of those games where anyone can jump in and group without being left behind. a new server "Ventus" opened in March which is also perfect timing for a revisit. I'd say definitely one of the hidden gems up there with Ferentus.
>>
>>2506858
for the games I've played:

>Ferentus
might be the peak hidden gem for all its obscurity and genuine surreal experience. I've already ranted about how exceptional this one was, but another factor was the community and the simple but consistent art direction, world, along with first-person mode. imagine the experience you'd get .hack// was an MMO? that was kinda Ferentus for me.
>Emil Chronicle Online
this game gets in for how unknown this was in the anglosphere as well as 4chan. the progression structure works a lot like RO, where you pick your map to grind out depending on your skills and equipment. tons of little systems in this we barely dipped in like elemental cards, possession, cattys, etc. had an absolute blast the first time around just fumbling around and discovering this game with 4chan. phenomenal soundtrack, and immersive world too.
>Neocron 2
I didn't play much but I enjoyed the little I did in a deep way. highly immersive game once again.
>Uncharted Waters Online
already posted >>2510698. I want to reiterate this has the best sound design out of any MMO I've played so far. may also be the comfiest MMO I've also played.
>>
>>2510698
I really didn't like how you had to trudge through the main quest to unlock new places to sail to. The MSQ being slow and confusing didn't help.

What was the general reaction to Spiral Knights? Did you rike it?

I played in the beta and for a while after launch but eventually I got pissed off at being energy gated. It was my first experience of mobile game design on PC. They should relaunch it as an actual mobile game though.
>>
>>2511711
Energy being a stamina system is thankfully no longer a thing, now it's just cash shop currency you can buy with gold ingame.

They added a progression wall in the form of manually leveling up gear, but VERY recently they turned that into something less awful. It's a very good time to get back into it.

I'd have to disagree with putting it on mobile, though, at least because of its controls. The focus on directional aiming and need to avoid attacks quickly would be way too clunky on a screen.
>>
>>2511094
>Not a hidden gem
none of these autists on /vm/ played this until it got voted on, that's enough of a qualifier for me
>>
>>2508922
Depending on the server we choose it may be impossible.
A couple of us did it on Infinity during the initial visit but we didn't have much leeway at all even with 2 weeks.
I think Restoration, for example, requires your account be over a month or two old for you to even have a chance to get the quest. Plus a whole bunch of other custom shit they've hidden from the player base.
>>
>>2511869
I think the only way a SWG revisit would be fun is if we do FTL and rush making a starship.
>>
>>2511989

yeah, just as I'm more interested in dipping my toes into all kinds of different MMOs than in playing final fantasy or WoW until the day that I keel over. that's literally why I'm here; to get novel experiences instead of replaying things I'm familiar with for a hit of nostalgia.

The stamina system is gone. There is a premium currency called energy, which makes things confusing, but it's unrelated to what you're thinking of.
I thought it was an excellent game and one of the best we played. There is little reason to keep playing once you clear the story mode, but for two weeks, it was perfect.

To those who were around to play them originally: How well do you think these 8 finalists work as a single week experience?
My main concern would be to get stuck with a game which takes a while to get going, since we'd potentially have to move onto the next one right when things start to pick up.
>>
>>2514512
raiderz is my number 1 because the combat is immediately fun and there are dungeons you require people for while leveling
>>
>>2514512
I think most of them are not good for a 1 week format if you don't already have a character or know all the ins and outs. The exception being islet because it's just a decoration game but people never stopped playing that.
>>
>>2514512
Warhammer mid-game PvP is really fun and we'll be able to reach that in a couple days.

RaiderZ doesn't have a lot of content and I was able to comfortably clear 85% of content while dicking around plenty in our 2 weeks. I'm sure you could finish the main story in 1 week if you tried.

Islet is barely a game, so it's a perfect fit in that sense :^)
>>
>>2514368
pretty rude, just made me vote for Islet instead of raiderz
>>
>>2514115
it's incredibly good, a bit rough around the edges but i think they fucked up by not releasing this outside of japan
>>
>>2505831
The only things I really discovered in this game were player-generated building puns and new paygates. I wouldn't credit the game for the former, and the latter is the opposite of compelling.
>>
>>2514512
RaiderZ is run of the mill fetch questing with dungeons, but the core action gameplay and mob difficulty makes the game genuinely fun. I don't know where >>2514695 is coming from, because none of the NEETs hit 40 in a week unless they were power levelling. the mid-level dungeons were pretty involved mechanically and plenty fun wiping and figuring things out blindly. FYI level cap at the time took around 120-150 hours in our group, downtime included. Blast having potential: decently good with 40+ actives. anyone who enjoyed Tera questing will like this.
Uncharted Waters has different categories in progression, so there's always ways for everyone to group and contribute. there's a bit of tutorialing but even that could be skipped past a certain point. I think this'll be a great title just for comfy grindan with little to no FOMO.
In any case either of these games will be a surface level experience for 1 week, but still an enjoyable one.
>>
>>2516092
about half the people completed the main quest line in RaiderZ. I think there were only 2 or 3 dungeons that I didn't complete and I was playing at a relatively leisurely pace. then there's the tacked on hunts shit - we didn't get to progress very far into that to get all the jewellry combinations and shit because of the time-gating.
>>
>>2516208
>about half the people completed the main quest line in RaiderZ.
I was one of them, but partying with the mmod I was easily clocking 150 hours by the end of the MSQ. no way that'd be a 1 week affair even NEETing.

I used to play it years ago and was deep into the game back then. There's no sailing but there are a lot of 17th and 18th century looking ships and ship docks. Mostly as set pieces. The game is pretty much your basic point and click MMO but also has some really visually pleasing towns varying from different time periods. There are undead pirate monsters and pirate characters you can collect along with a few pirate costumes but for the most part, you're just a land lubber.
>>
>>2519669
Maybe mabi is a little too well known but I'd be down to playing it

Oh, that blows, my mistake. I'll have a look at other games later, I'll bet there are some we don't have on our list yet.
>>
I really didn't expect Star Wars to lead this vote.
>>
>>2520140
I took a break from it a few weeks ago. Best time to play is during the summer and winter as that's when a special mega event happens called Master Plan rolls around that lasts for 2-3 months. Comes around twice a year, one in the summer and one in the winter and usually draws a sizable crowd due to all the events, goodies, and special boost they give out that helps players out with various tasks and sometimes content update or big content updates. Next month is going to have a new content during this upcoming Master Plan so I'll probably be going back and playing that.

A lot of that probably won't mean much to new players though but its the few times a year you'll see the game slightly more populated. Not super big numbers but still better than nothing.
>>
>>2519669
as a warning, a nontrivial amount of the people who would join us for this on retail are schizophrenic enough to spam gore and feces in threads until they 404 if someone slights them. the /vm/ general thread for this has had guildmasters abandon over mostly the members being a nightmare, and the last one deleted the guild over it. haven't kept up with it after that (i'd assume they remade), but you can look at it on the catalog yourself

more of a disqualifier: leading a guild requires a paid subscription.

Yeah you have to deal with legit schizos if you use any chat or social media platforms if you wanna play mabinogi with 4chan. Niggas be changing personally like Persona 1, 2,3,4, and 5 Royal Edition.
>>
>>2520306
the game itself is intensely good up until you hit the gear grind, and what sets it apart from other MMOs these days is that you can have a genuinely good time just dicking around with lower level and social content once you're at that wall

there's an MML based music writing skill that has a very large character count once you've maxed it, there's TWO drawing systems attached to buff skills that everyone wants (one guy uses this to preach christian verses by selling low priced items with his written scripture, and he's not even the schizo we're talking about), and there's almost a PSO2 level of costume options available.

but we WILL be dipping our feet in shit. i'd just go to one of the few private servers and try that out first, even if it's got older content.
>>
>>2520354

>>
>>2520251
Wew lad. Good information to know, even if Mabi's probably a bit too well-known to qualify for this project.
It's frustrating that the sheer volatility of an MMO's respective thread (past or present) needs to be considered when potentially visiting its community for a couple of weeks. Not so much for the concern over integrating ourselves well in-game, but for just how quickly things could spiral for our own threads if a few particularly committed giga-schizos from abroad started to obsess over us.
Barring some obvious trolls here-and-there, we've been immensely lucky during our time on /vm/ so far in not attracting the worst of the truly mentally ill who regularly obsess over MMO Generals in [current year]. Even just a couple of those types can drag a thread down into being a complete slog to try and have a conversation in, much less anything more organized than that. See also: /pso2g/, nu-/bnsg/ (when it was alive), /bpsrg/, etc, etc.

I recall watching a video of a guy playing on a private server last year. The whole "game was killed because people wouldn't stop buildings dicks out of lego" was hilarious.
>>
>>2521194
it is funny, but it isn't the main reason the game died
it had a ton of problems during development to the point that people were quitting before the game even released, and kids don't pay monthly subscriptions
I remember back in 2011 being really bummed out because I could not justify a lego universe subscription on my birthday list over anything else that wouldn't be gone in a month
my parents would have got it if I asked, but these things only happen twice a year so you can't waste gifts on temporary stuff like candy and subscriptions
on a side note, the customer service was very good in lego universe
there is a stud collecting key item in the game, it is used once in the beginning and then doesn't appear for a long time afterwards
I hadn't reached that "long time afterwards" yet, so I thought the item served no purpose and deleted it for inventory space
so when I eventually needed it again I was locked out of main quests until I asked for help from customer support, they sent me the key item in the mail the next day
it's a little odd that key items you are expected to always have on hand take up inventory space and that they can be deleted, but I really appreciated the quick response to my issues back then
>>
>>2521194

RCV anon has yet to make the announcement, but Dragon's Dogma Online and Star Wars Galaxies have won the anniversary revisit poll. This post is about server options for Dragon's Dogma, which we'll play first. SWG has many servers spread over 3 versions of the game, so for that one, we'll need more time to figure out the best one for us.

>Dragon's Dogma Online Servers
We have two options. The old DDON private server is excluded as it's more grindy than the original release which would be really bad for a one week stay.
Be sure to check out the sites, there's some more info in them. Personally, I found server location to not matter too much.

You make your account in the launcher.

We played on this server last time. There's already a guild and guild house ready for us if we choose to use them.
I believe since we last played, the ability to level some classes past a certain point has been locked behind MSQ progress. This was the case in the original game.
Balancing is considered to closely resemble the original game.
Located in Germany.

>LegacyDDON
https://www.legacyddon.com/
You also make your account in the launcher for this server.

Has client mods and custom content. I saw a mod to increase the chat character limit which sounds great. (This mod may or may not work on the other server, I'm not 100% sure.)
More focused on S1/S2 content.
Has custom class balance.
No need to unlock classes.
Has some custom features, like player to player trading.
Server located in East USA.

>SWG has many servers spread over 3 versions of the game, so for that one, we'll need more time to figure out the best one for us.
We can take our sweet ass time to decide on that since the first game we're revisiting is Dragon's Dogma.

The 2nd Anniversary Revisit Finals is over!
The two winners we'll be revisiting for one week each are:

Dragons Dogma Online and Star Wars Galaxies.
Congratulations!

Once again, thanks to anyone that has participated in this project so far, no matter how big or small. We've been through lows and even lower lows, but it's all been worth it in the end (allegedly). Just 14 more years and we'll be legal in most states.

>>
>>2524139
Legacy sounds a lot higher quality as a baseline and the region being closer to me is appealing.
>>
>>2524288
Actually with DDO, you can freely switch classes and each levels up independently so you old players can just try a new class to be on the same starting line as new players.

>>2524235
>>2524139
Dogma rising is better imo. The other server has some very questionable choices with respect to shop prices, gold, blood orb drops and what not. You can also do bitter black isle from the start in rising which is one of the most fun parts of DDO. In the other server it's locked behind level 60 which would mean a fair bit of people would miss out if they don't grind to 60 within a week.
>>
>>2524338
>In the other server it's locked behind level 60 which would mean a fair bit of people would miss out if they don't grind to 60 within a week.
To compound this fact, leveling is also more grindy in DDON compared to rising so it will be certain most people won't reach it.

Also you have to job train your pawns on DDON which is really annoying enough as is on your main character (which btw requirements are halved on rising). This part will also be new for most of the old players as well.

Chat mod works for both servers. It also includes some performance enhancements and makes it bearable on Linux if anyone is playing on that. You can easily get it from the Rising Discord and apply it to your client (if Legacy doesn't also have a link), or I can catbox it or whatever if people want to go all
>discord
about it.

>>2524591
It's not really P2P. While a player "hosts" a lot of the world state and monster AI, the server acts as the go-between for all players in the party. So if your whole party is in NA and you're on Rising, it goes NA -> Germany -> NA for the monster updates. That said, you'll still get rubber banding and jankiness even if you're all on NA and playing on Legacy, part of that is just CAPCOM's shitty netcode and we're not strong enough to fix that yet.

Depending on what we're playing, a lot of people who game with us are coming back to their character, not just the game. I wouldn't expect it to be any different with revisits.

Since it looks like we're playing Rising there have been a few changes since we were there last. There are more channels this time and you have to be in the same channel to party. 1 2 3 and 6 are normal channels with 3 being the choice to run Bitterblack Ruins. Channel 4 is a special endgame channel with different spawns and 80+ level mobs. Channel 5 is the trading channel where you can peer to peer trade, otherwise you can use the bazzar to buy and sell items and materials. Also I can't remember if High Scepter was available back then, but theres a small quest at level 10 to unlock the class. It's strong so you might check it out.

There are fairly different versions of Star Wars Galaxies based on different eras of the game.
Pre-CU (Combat Update) servers have an emphasis on player customization with a huge job roster. You level up your job by doing things relating to your professions such as healing as a medic job or fighting as a combat job. You can mix and match your job skills with other jobs. Ideally you'd want a fairly populated server to play on because the economy plays a large role in leveling up many jobs.

CU servers keep many of the sandbox elements while altering the combat to be a more traditional level-based system instead of the old purely stat-based one. Character progression became a bit more linear as well.

NGE (New Game Enhancements) removed the flexible job-based progression, replacing it with predefined classes. Combat was altered from Pre-CU/CU to be faster. The progression was altered to include questlines with the aim of making the game more guided, easier, and less complex. The questlines can also be freely ignored if you want to level other ways.

The Jump to Lightspeed (JTL) expansion allows you to build your own spaceship and explore space. It's not available on Pre-CU servers yet.

We played on the SWG Infinity server last time (Pre-CU). I believe the Bog has survived until now.

Later revisions of the game would possibly be more enjoyable to play in the short-term, but it feels like a wasted opportunity not to check in with the Weeabog on Infinity for one last ride. Especially if one or two anon have been maintaining it for so long after this project originally moved on.
Never played any version of SWG before, and wasn't around to catch it when it was current for us, so my opinion on playing the same server as before might be more positive compared to those who already went through it once.

>Especially if one or two anon have been maintaining it for so long after this project originally moved on.
Nah, sets a bad precedent.
>>
>>2534213
The precedent set is already to go back to our previous server for the Anniversary. We've done it every single time so far.
>>
>>2534213
can you explain why the precedent's bad instead of just saying no
you have over 2000 letters to use here
>>
>>2537474
no :^)
>>
>>2534281
That is incorrect.

Good morning, MMOfriends. I'm one of the fags that oversees the board's divegrass team.
It's Divegrass season back again, and so we're looking to freshen up the roster as per usual.
Your boy "Rigged Polls" had a good season last time, so I'm here to ask you if you'd want to keep him as your Thread Rep or you'd want anyone else instead.
As always, you can (You) me with your thoughts or do so in our Hideout thread >>2539755
The poll should be going up this weekend.
Thank you for your support as always, lads. See you all around.
>>
>>2539826
Rigged Polls had ultimate power at one point, but he hasn't shown his face in a while. I think we need to make room for the clique, not sure how it should look though.

How do you decide what vm threads get players? Just wondered.
I'm also saying this because back on /vg/ i was planning on forming a VGL team for /axg/ (apex legends) but the thread sort of died for a bit after a trash new season or something (end of 2022) and i gave up on making more players and assets (although despite how hard it was for a Blender casual like me it was quite fun)
(also this isn't me asking for /axg/ to be included because it's a /vm/ thread now, i'm just curious like i said, i havent followed 4cc properly in over a year)
>>
>>2539826
Whats the Character limit? I was thinking "Allegreza's Ghost" or "Alle's Ghost" and its a slutty Elin from Tera
>>
>>2540363
>How do you decide what vm threads get players?
All the chosen "reps" from each thread (along with other reps from general Multiplayer Vidya culture) get polled together, and the top results with the most votes get to make it into the roster.
>>2540502
iirc it was 30/35 characters for the PES version we're currently using (PES15). Our longest character name currently in is "Autistically Specific Minecraft Servers".
>>2540259
I wouldn't mind a change of player, but we'd need a base to go off of as to how the player would look like.
>>
I kinda misunderstood >>2540363 question, lole.
I ask in most threads that
1- are active
2- don't look like it's overran by bots
3- are purely about vidya and not circlejerking (like /magog/ is).
Some slower threads get consideration because they have been in the roster for fucking ever (Worms, 100OJ, etc).
That's about it.
>>
>>2539826
Keep him in, he's /our boy/
>>
>>2538171
How so? We went back to the same server for both PSU not that we had a choice and ECO and we've gone back to Rising for DDON. Every single time we've revisited so far we've gone back to the same server we played on previously.
>>
>>2539826
My vote would be stay with Rigged Polls. Games/People come and go, the only constant is poll after poll.
>>
>>2540502
Shut the fuck up you retard

LMAO

These are the servers that were polled last time we played SWG. Are there any other servers that should be added?

SWG Infinity - https://www.swginfinity.com/
Pre-CU server.
We played on this server last time. The Bog should still be standing.
Good population.

SWG Restoration - https://swgr.org/pages/about/
Has CU combat and classes but all of NGE content, including JTL.
Low population.
Extra QoL.

SWG Legends - https://swglegends.com/
NGE server.
Custom content including new quests.
Has an expansion which adds a new planet
Has the most content out of all the servers.
Largest active population.
Extra QoL.
Jedi are unlocked from the beginning.

>Cabal Online
Actually kind of remember this one, was pretty fun back in the day
>>
I'm watching some Summer Games Fest showcases and a trailer for this popped up: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2144600/Eterspire/

Should we put it in the running? It has awards apparently but I'm sure they're pretty meaningless awards where there was like 2 candidates.
>>
>>2549138
Feels like the theme for this round is 2000s MMOs you used to play as a kid.
>Anarchy Online
>Asheron's Call
>Cabal Online
>City of Heroes
>Dark Age of Camelot
>Lineage 1
>>
>>2549138
I remember some funky combo system which turns your usual routing into a QTE.
>>
>>2548799
almost everything except City of Heroes (are we really doing this?) seems decently obscure. this might be a good one.
>>
>>2549874
Huh... this looks super neat! I'd like that!
>>
>>2551693
I'd say City of Heroes still counts because its an officially dead game, and its peak was the 2000s.
>>
>>2548012
Sounds like these are the best options from their respective eras of SWG, unless anyone has a pet server they want to shill I'll put up the poll in a bit
>>
Which era of SWG was the best? So I know what to vote for
