Avoid killing other members of the crew, don't fuck around with bombs or plasma or anything else that could put holes in the station, stick to low-responsibility jobs until you know what you're doing and you're golden.

Nowadays, no. Every admin will assume you're an alt account and instantly assume the worst when you inevitably make an honest mistake. You'll have to rack up a bunch of living hours doing nothing or boring jobs like station janitor before you try learning anything with consequences so the server jannies think you're just a regular player who made a fucky wucky and not a griefer. Even recently on this server a beloved new player was driven away because one of our schizo admins thought they were an alt even though they were obviously nothing like the person they were accused of being an alt of.

Also people on VG will claim to be new player friendly but it's really not, you're lucky to find anyone who will teach you anything more than basics and if you don't do your job right or ask for help from the wrong people they will just shit on you in-game even if they don't know how to do that stuff themselves. Your best bet is to just observe and watch how other people do their job and read the wiki extensively. Maybe set up a local server to experiment with things yourself.

You need to change your IP, CID, remove all traces of BYOND from your machine, and make an account with a separate password IIRC.
VPN can take care of the IP part but major hub servers are using IP VPN detection nowadays, so you might just have to wait until your ISP gives you a new IP.
A virtual machine will take care of the CID and BYOND installation part, but you'll have to tweak the settings (hard drive serial number) to make sure it has a unique CID and not whatever one the default VM setup will give it.
If you don't want to use a VM then you have manually delete all leftover BYOND files and registry entries or just use something like Revo Uninstaller, then either use a CID spoofer, get a new hard drive/SSD, or find some way to flash the firmware to change the serial number. Changing the serial number in regedit doesn't work anymore.

Botany. There's a ChemMaster where you can learn how to separate chemicals and learn the reagent system. You can very quickly make big mistakes like plasma flooding or kudzu loosing through mutating but if you read the wiki to know what to look for when analyzing mutated plants you won't fuck up that much. I think of it as a right of passage to accidentally do both when new anyways so you learn what not to do (unless you are antag). All the people who main botany are pretty nice so they would likely be willing to help you out too.

Engineering is good for learning construction which will be useful in most jobs, and knowing how to set up an engine is good for lowpop.
