there's usually many public servers open, but the multiplayer mod isn't perfect and desync and lag WILL and CAN happen (items not syncing on clients, rubberbanding, etc). It's best practice to keep servers running on low ping, and to have other players pick up your desynced items if they're dropped to help force refresh them and make them usable for you again.

Reposting my lobby hosting advice from /v/.
>BACK UP YOUR MP SAVES!
It's a terrible feeling to lose a save mid-run and lose everyone's progress, especially if it's because you misclicked and accidentally started a new run instead of continuing the save. That happened to me yesterday and if I didn't back up our mp save just a minute ago our entire runs progress would have been lost and I would have wanted to take dive into a pool of glass shards.
And I think in the lobby I hosted before that there was a problem mid-game and everyone suddenly disconnected and the save file which I did NOT backup was also lost.

Simply taking a moment to back up your mp saves can save everyone much grief.
>How to back up your mp save as the host:
1. First, when successfully reaching the bottom of a layer, click the SAVE & QUIT button. Everyone will be brought back to the main menu and still connected to the lobby, the lobby won't be automatically closed or anything.
This also has the nice side-effect of allowing everyone to take a short break to piss or get a drink or something.
2. Saves are located in your \AppData\LocalLow\Orsoniks\CasualtiesUnknown\mp_save folder. I've been copying and pasting the mp_save folder into a different folder I made specifically for backing up saves.
3. To continue the mp lobby save, simply click Descend in the main menu and click Continue. REMEMBER to manually REAPPLY whatever playstyle settings you want to play with! You will have to do this everytime you save and quit so I've made a .txt file for saving the copy and pastes of playstyle settings so I don't have to manually adjust every slider every time.
4. In the event the mp save is lost and you need to use your backup, simply copy the mp_save folder from your backups, go to the mp_folder in the game's AppData and delete it. Then paste your mp_save backup to replace it.

Here's the server rule preset I've been using for all my lobbies that has been working very well. Paste it in mp_rule_presets.json in the game's AppData folder.

This lets only (You) the host use console commands. They have many uses such as letting you rectify bugs or glitches that may occur and negatively impact the players, having fun in the sandbox, and implementing whatever custom gimmicks you can think of for the run. Such as spawning a single elder thornback in a random position in every layer just to spice things up. I previously did a run where for every layer descended I would grant every player 1 wish to gain any 1 item and it was fun and I want to do it again.

>Player Count Limit
Seemingly unlimited now! BUT the more players in the lobby, the worse your (and ONLY your) FPS as the host will become. For me, hosting 4players runs almost perfectly 60fps, 5players dips down to 45fps~, 6players to 20-30~, and 7players or more at 5-15fps~.
But don't worry too much about low frames, it's important to know that while (You)r framerates may be low, all the players connected to your lobby are unaffected. Your fps will be reduced, while theirs is unaffected
Really the player count limit is up to you to decide how willing you are to put up with reduced and possibly unplayably low framerates at higher player counts. Have anons carry you!

>Unchipped is individual
Disable this, or each individual player will be chipped/unchipped depending on their own settings. In an early lobby I had this enabled and it meant one anon was playing the lobby unchipped the whole time while we were all chipped and we never even knew until after the lobby ended kek

>Straggler Radline Percent
You absolutely must change this to 100%. The default 30% means if 30% of players reach the bottom a radline suddenly appears right above any anons that aren't already at the bottom. It's probably meant for public lobbies

Disabled. It's funny when talking with your mouth full or underwater garbles your speech, but I dislike how it cuts off dead anons from talking with alive anons. It's better to disable it so all anons can talk as freely as they please.
I'd love it if the Speech Impairment setting was made more granular so we can still talk like retards with items in our mouths or blubber while talking underwater or stutter when freezing or dying, but also still communicate when dead or unconscious.

I enable these. I think everyone keeping their gear and skill levels when respawning is conducive to the mostly lighthearted and easygoing fun I aim for my lobbies to be.

>Always Allow Carry
Enabled. It's a very useful setting, you can use it to pull players through gaps in walls and catch and lift them up to you on higher ledges in stuff. This setting is really conducive and fun for teamwork and helping your fellow anon.

>Piggyback Max Stack
>Piggyback Weight Multiplier
Set to 2 and 0.5x respectively. The idea is to make carrying players easier, because carrying players can save their life by removing them from the pool of oil they're currently drowning in after getting stalactited or zapped or landmined. And letting you carry two players at once allows for really awesome heroic shit to happen, it's cool and fun.

>Spectate While Unconscious
It's nice to be able to watch your fellow anons when you're very slowly dying or are unconscious for a while for whatever reason instead of staring at a mostly black screen.

>Amputate Healthy Players
Disabled. It's a troll setting as far as I can tell

>Save Player Position
Disabled! Disable this or when new players join your lobby mid-run they will start at the top of the layer instead of spawning at your position. This is really bad when the radline is active as you can imagine.

Final lobby hosting tip.
>Playstyle setting - Metabolism Rate
One last important setting, the Metabolism Rate in the playstyle settings.
This used to be a server rule, now it's a playstyle setting in the vanilla game.
When it was a server rule, I set it to about 0.7 or 0.6 which was good. My advice is that the more players, the less the metabolism rate should be. Feeding 5 hungry and thirsty expies at default hunger rates can be very difficult at times and I'd rather we die of traps or monsters than slowly watching each other agonizingly helplessly dying of hunger or dehydration.

Lately I've been setting the metabolism rate to 0.5 with 5 players and we have not been going too hungry or thirsty.

Always remember you need to reapply playstyle settings every time you continue the save file after saving and quitting after descending a layer! One time I was wondering why we are all suddenly so fucking hungry and thirsty and it was because I forgot to lower the metabolism rate.

I've put up a dedicated server and will let it run for a while. Feel free to use it, I've copied over most of the settings that you guys have posted up there. Biggest problem is that I can't pre-configure shit like loot and metabolism rate so whenever the server restarts it'll switch back to default. What irritates me is that you can even do shit like --ksmulti-runcommand to run console commands automatically when the game starts BUT THOSE DON'T LET YOU EDIT PLAYSTYLE SETTINGS.

Usually I write morally gray endings where it depends on the reader whether they consider it good or bad. Having said that, it does seem the game has a small memory leak so I'll have to set something up to restart the server every so often. My lobby is up! I was thinking of doing a craftmaxxing run where we start with just material pouches and lighters and loot spawns are set to 0.1x, but traders are guaranteed at lifepods and have 3x the amount of items.
We'll also have boosted XP gains and slightly increased encumbrance because I think it's fun.

I did a little bit of testing to see if running a dedicated server in the background could be a solution to the host experiencing low framerates in big servers. Evidently you can't run two instances of Cas:U at the same time. So I tried running the server in Windows Sandbox. That pegged my CPU and the MP mod didn't load for some reason. Then I made a new Windows account and tried launching the server using runas, which didn't allow me to run two instances simultaneously.

Shame I didn't get any conclusive results, but I'm not a Windows guy. Posting anyway in case this is somehow helpful.

My host thoughts on the run. Material pouch and lighter was nice. It was nice being able to freely start campfires and cook things whenever. But it wasn't really a game changer or anything.
We played with 0.3x loot and it still felt more like 0.1x. When we did find traders they did have lots of items but they were so rare and loot was so rare we didn't really do much trading.

Two players caught item AIDS in layer 3, which seems to actually be a rare item desync issue.
The AIDS-infected players leaving and rejoining did not fix it.
The host restarting the server did not fix it.
What did seem to fix it was the host using the sketchy syncreset command first, and then having the players do it too. I think that fixed it.

My guess is there's something that's keeping track of stuff that's happening in the game that isn't being cleaned up whenever you exit to the main menu. Not likely, problem with these kind of games (and their mods) is that they use a LOT of statics which, by design, will never get garbage-collected. So when you build shit like this you need to pay close attention and make sure you garbage-collect correctly yourself. Trying to mess with that with mods isn't impossible but definitely not easy. But a scheduled daily restart is probably the easiest solution, just need to figure out when the best time to do it is so I nuke the least amount of runs :^)

we did a reverse run where we started at the bottom of layer 5 and tried to make it to the top of layer 1, it was cool. We got really lucky with no salads on layer 5. If one found us while we were all basically naked the run would have ended very quickly kek. We got to the top of layer 4 when the 2 INT dune screamed OBSERVER ACKBAR and detonated his grav-bag nuke.
It was funny and all in good fun since the host had to go anyway. I can recommend reverse runs, they're interesting. Getting to dive straight into layers 5 and 4 means maximum excitement from the moment the run starts.

Definitely the greatest tips that will greatly extend your lifespan are the following, and they're quite simple too:
These are two most common ways new (and veteran!) players get injured in this game:
1. Traps
2. Falling
And terribly often one of the two immediately leads into the other.
Protip: So avoid traps and avoid falling! It's as simple as that.

To elaborate a bit more
>never jump into darkness. if you can't see where you're going to land, simply don't jump.
You will avoid many easily avoidable fall injuries this way.
>ALWAYS be searching for traps, ESPECIALLY in the later layers. You may someday know exactly what I mean.
Because a trap you don't see is a trap that can/will hurt you. A spotted trap can be avoided or disarmed and not hurt you.
And that's basically it. If you avoid falling and traps you will avoid pretty much all injury. The only other things you have to worry about hurting you are the Grey Planet's hostile wildlife, but fortunately they are relatively rare compared to the plentiful traps and constant threat of falls.

One last great tip for noobies is if you step in glass shards, immediately bandage the wound. Yes, despite what your intuition may think you can safely wrap bandages over the glass embedded in your paw.
Once the major bleeding is stopped, you're now completely safe and can take all the time you want to pull out the glass shards from your poor paw.

Harvest the glowing fruit things and then drag and apply them to your wounds to use the glowfruit as a makeshift disinfectant. That shit will save your live again and again and again by nipping infections in the bud.

And remember to stay nice and clean too! Being dirty lowers your immunity stat which makes infections progress faster, and regress slower when disinfected.
The most common ways to clean yourself is
1. Immersing yourself in pools of water
2. Lifepod disinfectant sprays also clean you and apply a minor disinfected status effect to your entire body.
You can wash yourself in small puddles of water by holding X to ragdoll yourself and flopping around in the puddle.

1) Use the flashlight you're given at the start to check beneath you before you jump.
2) When the battery runs out, glowfruit works as well or even better. Just throw them down. If you can't see the glow from where you stand it's not a safe jump.
3) Always check for alternative routes. Gravel is easy to dig through and you can ragdoll through tiny gaps if you are feeling adventurous.
4) Grab everything you see and craft all the time. At first you'll only be able to make ripped bandages and foliage bags but don't discount them, they are light and always useful.
4) Keep crafting new things, no matter what. It increases your INT, which will allow you to craft more useful things like batteries, ammo, rope, torches, neural boosters, antibiotics and specialty healing items.
5) Keep grabbing stuff, it will boost your STR, even if it tires you.
6) There's no need to rush, the time limits per layer are very generous and you get a lot of time to loiter. Use that time to do pushups and crafting as well as general R&R and inventory management.
7) Rush the green layer. There is little loot and unless you have an SMG with three full mags and a level head? It's not worth it to risk a limb to the salad.
8) Do not sleep near tentacle plants, they'll attack you on your sleep.
9) Dry bushes, water (clean or full of algae) and oil pits can break your fall. The former is ideal and whereas liquids will get you wet, dirty or both it isn't a deal breaker.
10) Wash every once in a while by taking a dip in clean water. Or better yet, the disinfectant showers in drop pods. Always go for those, even if you're clean.
11) Be nice to trader, it's a hug based economy. Stealing from them or the pod or coercing them isn't really worth it. There are plenty of empty pods if you need lightbulbs or rubber.

14) You can risk a few bites from a dune. More than a few will fuck you up.
15) Always check crates, toolboxes and caches. Medical caches are always useful even if you're healthy because medical items are light but valuable.
16) Don't linger near corpses. Depression can spiral into self-harm and your Expie ignoring your commands.
17) Doesn't hurt to keep a plushie handy in case self-harm becomes a risk. If you see one, keep it.
18) Your bags degrade, keep an eye on their HP. Specially grav bags.
19) Fent can help if you're really depressed, but withdrawal sucks.
20) Mixed fluid barrels aren't worth it, even if you have a fluid centrifuge. If you're not close to an easily accessible trader? Ignore them.
21) Always mix and match ranged and melee. Spiders and throwbacks are nippy little shits.
22) If you're facing the salad? Run. It's not worth losing a limb.
23) If you really want to face the salad? The SMG is the way to go. Three mags is the sweet spot. Don't let it get near you.
24) If you really want to flex on the salad? It turns, fittingly, like a mossback. Run circles around it and give it a good back scratch. It is possible, but unadvisable.
25) Chocolate milk in small sips won't make you sick and improve your mood. Don't overdo it or you'll throw up.
26) Don't take braingrow or neural boosters twice in a row. Wait forty minutes or it will mindwipe you.
27) Always keep a bag of human blood handy. It is useful for opening locked doors with genelocks. If you see one? Keep it. Just don't use it on yourself.
28) Always look up, check for skull crushers and stalactites. If they are thrice your height above you? You can risk a dash.
29) Oil will make you slip and fall. Avoid ledges drenched in oil.
30) Exercise, or just jumping around like a spastic can stave off a little bit of cold.

Actually they are worth it, even without a fluid centrifuge, as long as you have a bottle to spare. A minibarrel full of random shit can seem worthless at first, but hold SHIFT on it and you may find that its contents are worth the maximum trade value of 50. Fill a spare empty bottle with the minibarrel's contents and check the bottle's new value, the bottle will now probably be worth a lot! By filling spare bottles with mixed minibarrel potions you can easily, effortlessly, instantly, almost completely max out a trader's value cap and buy whatever you want from them by selling them a worthless yet highly valuable bottle of mixed minibarrel juice.

Hell yes, making produce juice out of mushrooms and shit in the desert is a complete gamechanger. I've never gone thirsty in layers 3 or 4 ever since an anon passed that tip to me. You don't even have to care about storing it in a bottle, you can just make it and then immediately drink it from the temporary container.
Interestingly, I didn't notice much of a difference between produce juice and refined juice in the sandbox. Their effects upon consumption are very similar. Refined juice seems to just replenish a little bit more thirst and hunger, and give the smallest amount of happiness, and that's it.

Conclusion: Produce juice is perfectly good enough in virtually all cases. You can go ahead and make refined juice if doing so is easily possible, but never fret or feel annoyed or disappointed if you can't, because produce juice and refined juice are almost identical as far as I can tell.

I dunno, I really like the shotgun but it's really not the best weapon unless you can get really close to something which you generally don't want to do. I can't say how it holds up vs a pistol but the SMG and Rifle completely blow it out of the water performance-wise. But purely because you can craft the ammo rather easily, I'd keep a shotgun as my primary bug clearer and try to get an SMG or Rifle for more solid targets.
But even with magazine-fed weapons, having a bandolier to store the actual ammo to load into the mags is still worth it.
And yeah I guess your priorities are going to be food water and meds.

I think the way it works is that every entity has a 'submerged' flag.
The sound cannon first checks the line of sight from its pivot to the player's torso.
If it's not blocked then it checks the submerged flag: If one target is submerged but the other one is not, then it misses.
It doesn't seem to check the liquid type. Only that either you or it are submerged.

what an incredible run yesterday, thanks everyone who stuck with me. some highlights,

Greatly increasing spawnrates makes hosts performance exponentially worse the more players there are.
Increasing fluid spawn multiplier seems to harm ability for players to join.
Overall I'd say the only realistic use of this mod in multiplayer is to increase minibarrel spawn rates. Everything else is too laggy.
I considered this mod to slightly increase plant spawns for more players, but it's too laggy. A more optimal solution would a mod that simply increases the loot dropped by plants which spawn at the default unmodified rate.
And anon's AutoLoadRunSettings works with Too Many Settings!

That wasteland was quite rough, even more than usual. Out of 9 sawians, 5 died, and four made it to the bottom.
But we made it to the jungle and I blew up a salad with dynamite for the first time and then anons hunted it down as it ran away and killed it. Awesome.

Oh yeah and I successfully restarted two anon's stopped hearts that lobby! I think I've figured out the trick to restarted a stopped heart without that one medicine:

We tried this multiple times in a test lobby and it worked every single time. I don't think it ever took longer than a minute of CPR to revive someone.
So here's my new refined plan to restart someone's heart with a defib zap and CPR.

0. Ideally have a 3rd player (not the player with the defib) immediately perform CPR on the heart-stopped expie to keep their blood oxygen O2 as high as possible and avoid brain death and damage from hypoxia.

If a player doesn't have the mod, they will not be able to refuel jetpacks with oil.
Every player that does have the mod installed will be able to refuel jetpacks with oil.
So yes, only the host can have the mod installed and refuel other player's jetpacks for them.

LRD does not heal stroke.
1mL of procoagulant MAY be all you need to heal stroke. We were able to test this in a real game and injecting 1mL only partially healed my stroke, I needed a second 1mL injection.

We did various tests to try and revive a sawian after IED detonation. None worked.

Did you know ice packs double the muscle healing rate of the limb it's applied to? This makes them incredibly useful and valuable.
Did you also know this healing boosting functionality of icepacks DOES NOT WORK IN MULTIPLAYER?
That's right, we tested ice pack healing rates and they had absolutely no effect in multiplayer.
Ice packs still correctly cool players down in multiplayer, but they do NOT improve healing rates.

Lobby's over! Thanks everyone for joining, we peaked at 11 players. My hubris caught up to me and I was crippled down to 5 fps at some points in the jungle, but for most of the run I was totally fine. Fun run, we killed 1 salad and mortally wounded another. And learned whoever holds grav bags has the most power in the lobby.

I'm in awe at your excellent performance with almost a dozen players. I want to give thanks to the MP mod dev who's 4.0 update overhaul fixed so much shit and lets us all play together with few gamebreaking issues. I'm definitely installing the No Oil Pipes mod for when I host.
Interesting that your fps dropped in the jungle, I guess it's because of all the spiders? Hey wait are there zero spiders in the wasteland? Because of the radiation maybe.
There's a performance mod that claims to greatly optimize some things, I should test if it works in multiplayer.
