Im really bad at sticking to a character normally, but holy shit this game takes it to a whole new level, every other archetype looks way too much fun...
>>
Would anyone be interested in a day, probably in week 2, where we make alts and do the Praetorian starter area storyline? Its up to level 20 and one anon did it in a day solo so I assume its doable in a whole day
>>
>>2718005
Whats nuts about it is that they're not just flavor animations when they could have easily done that. They're all different gameplay experiences. So like, Kinetics and Empathy, while both are in the same archetype do different things. Empathy is pure healer but Kinetics slows down enemy speed and boosts ally speed.

Or for example I'm the Gravity Dominator, that is just mostly teleporting foes around or throwing them around, but there was also Ice which would have froze them in place, or electricity which from the electric dominator seems to make electro cages that they can't pass so it blocks them in.
>>
>>2718005
City of heroes was originally put together when EQ was the archetypal MMO. "endgame" wasnt really as important as building your character. You'd have a stable of characters for whatever is needed in your group, and once you get your BIS equipment (mods in this case) you were basically done with that character, and would use it for either styling on lowbies or helping your friends finish theirs.
>>
>>2718066
each different variety of attack has its own unique secondary effect, too. Dark gives an accuracy debuff, cold slows, electricity drains endurance, energy knocks back, psychic slows recharge, sonic debuffs damage resistance, radiation debuffs defense., etc.
>>
I'm goddamn paralyzed by the character creator. All these choices and I can't find a generic mook balaclava.
>>
Did a team of mostly Masterminds and it was fucking crazy. Just so many mobs on the screen.
>>
>>2718223
one of the infuriating things about the character creator is that there's a whole bunch of shit you wouldnt expect, but some stuff you would is completely absent.
Want to build a fucking gundam? they have an entire set around that. want to wear an amulet on a chain? sorry, no luck.

I'm the artist dev for the server. If you guys have some ideas and reference for costume parts I can start making them. We recently got done with a plugin for Maya so my workflow is a lot better and I'm getting back into the groove of creating costume content.

>>2718324
We're probably going to change that in one way or another, maybe through just making all the hats a Head Detail independent of what hair you choose. Of course that introduces jank and clipping, but the creatives tend to thrive on it so it's not a huge deal.
We also have plans to make modular hair similar to how Head Details currently function. You pick a general hair style and then through additional menus you can add other bits of hair like ponytails, hair strands, etc.

>>2718381
Yeah definitely. I'll talk to the other devs and we should be able to hold a CC for everyone pretty soon. In fact, one of our devs is currently working a "Henchmen" system where you can recruit generic NPCs to your party, similar to how Guild Wars did it. We wanted to make a CC for that so people could submit their own ideas and designs for how the henchmen would look so maybe we can merge those together.

>>2718389
Zaku from Gundam? I'm not familiar with it but if that's the case I can take a look. We've already added some shoulder pieces and bolters from the Space Marine kit. I'm usually kind of hesitant to add one-to-one recreations from iconic media, but as long as the part can serve multiple functions outside of only supporting the thing it came from then I can make exceptions.

Well you know how you unlock Gladiators with badges and nobody ever uses them? Just have Gladiators be recruitable henchmen instead of an arena only thing. Or if you wanna make it more complicated, a reputation system with each of the groups and max rep = you get to spawn their mobs as your henchmen.
>>
>>2718464
That's actually a pretty interesting idea. A bit more complicated than what our dev is currently doing, but I'll pass the idea along in case he ever wants to expand on it. Currently the system will allow one player to recruit up to 3 generic heroes/villains, so 2 players could have a full team of 8 if they wanted. Badge unlocks are going to be included as a way for players to be able to recruit named NPCs within the game which might be a good way to introduce that idea, assuming he wants to include it. We were planning on hosting a form of Costume Contests to decide what the generic Henchmen will look like, so if you guys are interested in that we can host something like that for you. Otherwise we can do a general CC.
>>
>>2718492
So basically Companions like what a lot of modern MMOs do now?
>>
>>2718521
More or less. They'll be less robust and commandable than Mastermind minions and less powerful than a player character, but it's a way for solo players to not feel left out as you can use these guys to run raids and stuff that requires multiple players. The dev is a big Guild Wars fan so that's where the idea came from.

Yeah the game has a whole bunch of named NPCed Hero and Villains you stumble across and often fight in missions. The hardest of which are the Freedom Phalanx who are this universe's Justice League/Avengers and the members are all obvious pastiches of various famous superheroes.

But if you just happen to get one of them to fight in a mission, they whoop your ass, compared to some of the "lesser" named heroes and villains to fight. I believe when it comes to bank stuff, the level of hero generated depends on how well you seem to be doing at the bank heist, and your overall level and stuff. With "Freedom Phalanx Member" being "You're doing real well so I will throw you a challenge"

the poor categorization is a consequence of the original devs. it was ALWAYS a mess, with different meshes kinda tacked on to the original list that was for the msot part just silver-age spandex. They've been talking about wanting to reorganize everything but so much of it is interdependant on different shit that it basically has to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Some things I've noted from my first few days of play that might help some others:
>Inspirations are basically items and you get them in abundance so use them a lot
>You can combine the inspirations by right clicking them to make other inspirations, which is handy if you die and wanna revive
>Enhancements are basically gear, equip them, they do help quite a bit
>Get some sort of travel power early on to help with map traversal
>Merit vendors sell some travelling stuff too like a hoverboard, as well as some smaller powers that are mostly buffs or ranged damage
>You start with a few inherent powers if you click the powers section of your powers bar next to inspiration, and scroll down until you see them
>This includes a mission teleporter, a revive, a team teleporter and an inspiration spawner. They each have 1 - 2 hour cooldowns though. Still handy
>I assume these were buffs you could buy from the cash shop in live or something, or buffs for subs or something.
>If you log out at specific places, you get rewards. Pic related.
>>
>>2719271
You also get an origin-specific low cooldown attack you can use as filler until you get a better thing to put in your rotation.

The Broker system lets you target farm origin-specific (i.e. stronger) enhancements. Just keep doing missions for your broker (click the newspaper in the contacts / missions tab). Eventually theyll introduce you to another contact that gives you missions for target farming and eventually a shopkeeper that sells better ones than normal shopkeepers.
>>
>>2719357
There's origin specific stores that sell SO's in the higher level zones. It's not that hard to afford them since enhancements don't decay on thunderspy.

>enhancements don't decay on thunderspy
That did throw me off a bit during the tutorial, as one of the NPC mentions the exact opposite. Glad that isn't the case here, needing to constantly cycle through Enhancements sounds like it would've been a pain otherwise.
The tutorial also still expects you to combine Enhancements at one point, despite none of the base-level Enhancements being eligible for that at all (maybe this changes later).
>>
>>2719758
It does not change later.
Sorry this was unclear.
Basically we had to revise our whole economy due to our smaller population.
The auction house was never going to work for us the way it was intended.
Instead we use reward merits to purchase IOs (Invention Origin) often at level 50.
(Some of them have such useful effects that I'll get them while leveling like increased HP or knockback resistance.)
We also made creating the IOs easier by redoing the salvage system.
Originally there were over 100 types of salvage.
We cut that down to 6 and called them materials!
This means the materials that drop will ALWAYS be useful.

Can the devs fuck off thanks

I'm having fun. Early MMO jank aside the game does a good job of making me want to level up and unlock new powers. I like seeing how everyone's customizing their characters and how no one really looks the same. Grinding by yourself is boring but party play is fun with all the abilities going off at once. The level sync is a godsend because it lets you make a party and play with anyone who's around.

There's a lot of passion here and it's a shame the game died literally months before capeshit really popped off.
>>
>>2720126

Appreciate the heads-up.
Sort of figured the tutorial just wasn't rewritten to accommodate the server's adjustments, given every Enhancement I've found so far over the past three days has been unable to be combined with others. So long as the player isn't missing out on improvements which would've come from combining duplicate Enhancements, it's not a big deal (albeit a bit confusing for genuine newcomers).
Not surprising to hear the Auction House is basically a non-starter as well, since that's often the case with smaller private servers. Haven't been paying as much attention to the Merit vendors as I likely should be, knowing they're supposed to be the replacement for playing the AH.
100 different types of Salvage sounds like a complete nightmare to manage, good call on cutting it down to something more reasonable.

Pretty cool to hear some insight into what's changed for Thunderspy versus other CoH servers.
Been fun so far after coming to grips with the game's more freeform methods of making progress, and the two-way level sync feature is such a godsend for playing with others. Why more MMOs didn't adopt this game's Team Sync feature is truly beyond me.

It makes me wonder wtf NCSoft were doing when they shut down the game, on the same year Avengers came out no less. Imagine this game but without all the jank and some more modern, fluid controls and more modern UI.

That probably would have happened if they kept CoH alive, fund them to make a CoH 2, it would have come out around Infinity War or Endgame, perfect marketing.

I like the small things in MMOs. I think small things really add to the lived in nature of the world, which I think is important in MMOs and what is lost in modern MMOs who focus too much on dopamine hitting rush dungeons and nickel and diming.

They also show effort and passion and you can tell the devs had a lot of it, I mean I assume that if they made this game, they were superhero fans. But small things that I've noticed:
>When I chose to spare someone in a prior mission, they returned in the finale mission of that questline and helped me as an NPC who fights.
>NPCs who walk by will bring me up and mention prior missions that I did
>As someone mentioned earlier, the enemies aren't dumb and will follow you inside and outside
>There are lots of exploration badges, little things that they knew you would do with your powers to get to that spot
>How active the NPCs are, the cops arrest people and those people thank you if you kill those cops, they'll talk to each other and have conversations you can overhear and say stuff like "WHAT THE?" when you attack them mid conversation. They'll walk around, sit down, read newspapers, get back up. And I know that is common today but for a game released in 2004 and if you compare other games enemies at the time who'd basically walk left to right on a loop, thats really cool
>The map changes depending on what you do, again pretty common in MMOs these days but for back then not so much. So I blew up a Longbow base building and from now on that base building is in ruins for me.
>The enemies have backstories if you right click them and click info. The unique NPCs also have more unique backstories, pic related. Didn't have to be done for random hero I killed in 2 minutes but they did it.
>>
>>2720159
>Why more MMOs didn't adopt this game's Team Sync feature is truly beyond me.
The game came out at roughly the same time as WoW, so any of their good ideas got lost in the rush of the market trying to ape WoW in an attempt to get that audience.
Had a similar effect on the average MMO player's mindset too. Why bother with level scaling when everyone needs to rush to max level as fast as possible so they can get to the endgame content?

Yeah, I know you're right.
It's frustrating, since most wistful accounts of former WoW veterans from the 2000s tend to focus more on the memorable nature of the leveling experience, rather than the doldrums of running raids at endgame every week.
Maybe CoH gets like that at level cap as well for all I know, but as someone coming in blind, the leveling process here feels so unexpectedly fresh for a game from 2004. Brokers doling out randomly-generated dungeons to run, bank heists, Signature Arcs, player-created missions to check out, personal difficulty sliders to tweak enemy spawnrates and levels relative to your own, etc, etc.
The game doesn't even feel much like a traditional MMO either, with all the wacky movement powers at your disposal. It's super unique so far, can definitely see why it's kept such an audience over the years, albeit on unofficial servers.
>>
>>2720535
As a newbie I just cant tell what came out in 2004, what was added later in the game, and what was added by Thunderspy. Next year I wouldn't mind choosing this game for the revisit, and we do Rebirth which is meant to be more authentically like live. It'd be a nice comparison.

I think the untraditionalness that you mentioned is probably why it was canned though. I could see boardroom people at NCSoft thinking that the game is very hard to market due to being unlike other MMOs of the time.

the -DMG is just -3% which in a game where every damage buff is additive and eventually you hit a damage bonus cap, really means fucking nothing, like it might as well not even have that damage penalty. There's also an inherent toggle for FREE mez protection.

people have ported controls over to controllers before, but I honestly cant imagine how. You end up with a fuckton of powers by the time you're 50 (like three full hotbars worth) so it would get awkward going through all of those for an attack chain.

Only played tanked but it's pretty alright! Solo content is not an issue and you actually do alright damage!

So if I understand the alignment change correctly, I could start as a hero in paragon city, then do a morality mission at level 40 something that changes my alignment to vigilante. And once I am a vigilante, then I can freely travel between the heroes maps and villain maps.
>>
>>2728022
you can start at 20 and you have to 10 tip missions THEN a morality mission

then you can go back and forth freely
>>
>>2728022
Yes, but unless thunderspy has changed this, the distinction between vigilante and rogue is that vigilantes can only use hero contacts and start hero missions and vice versa for rogues and villain contacts. But you can still do those missions/contacts as part of a team, you just couldn't start a villain sided mission or strike force yourself.

I don't really get the point of Defenders. If you wanted to play pure support, it seems like Controllers are just way better at it.
>>
>>2728410
Pretty much. Defenders are a bit more soloable. Its pretty much "I wanna do attack and defence"
>>
>>2728410
Defender has higher scalars with Buffs and Debuffs, particularly sets with -res debuffs are great choices for defenders because you can't enhance for that so they can output the highest -res debuffs in the game increasing their teams damage output. I know controllers seem like the beesknees but on a team with actual support sets controlling things becomes irrelevant. If anything Corrupter is the top dog support.
>>
Thunderspy devs pls proliferate poison to Defenders

gibs (also is there a way to get the assets?)
also, what's the extent to which you guys did/can modify the game? specifically is there a way to edit existing animations, have you done it before?
tried wings today and was DISGUSTED by lack of idle animation, some emotes cause them to clip too.
>>
>>2728620
NTA but
>also, what's the extent to which you guys did/can modify the game?
the source code was leaked, so "can" is just a question of ability and whether or not the 7 years of ad-hoc nonsense written in excel spreadsheets that is the original codebase can hack it. from memory some of the shit they've added
>unreleased powersets
>wholly new powersets
>some NPC costume parts
>wholly new costume parts
>wholly new costume part categories
>new enhancement sets
>seasonal decorations and events (to varying degrees of success)
>the ability to kill civvies in mayhem missions
>new emotes/animations (slowly but surely as OBH is basically teaching himself animation)
>redone colorpicker
and then a whole bunch of backend shit to try to make modding the game easier, see previous "if the 7 years of ad-hoc original bullshit that was never meant to be fucked with" thing.
Clipping on animations is a low/no priority fix because there's just too many variables to go in and tweak for next to no payoff.
>>
>>2728830
and of course asymmetrical arm parts, and minion customization, the latter of which was claimed to be impossible multiple times by the original devs.
>>

I'm sure if you're with a sweatier group people are more obsessed about people doing specific things and specific actions, but I like the freeform groups we have. Who's the tank? Whoever ran in first. Do we have a healer? Maybe. Is that my fire on the ground or the enemies? Stand in it and find out.

Dungeons feel more fun than modern mmo dungeons when it's less predictable and planned out.
>>
>>2729943
Honestly, not really. Even a sweaty group is freeform. Actually in a sweaty group you don't worry about who's the healer or who's the tank because you don't need one in this game.

How to unlock new costume slots:
>Level 20 villains and rogues can do a mission for The Facemaker in the Cap Au Diable branch of The Facemaker to earn an additional costume slot. Level 30 villains and rogues can do a mission for Gorgeous Glenda in the Cap Au Diable branch of The Facemaker. (She is in the room at the end of the hall.) Level 40 villains and rogues can do a mission for Lovely Linda in the St. Martial branch of The Facemaker. Each of these missions awards an additional costume slot, up to the maximum.

The final slot can only be unlocked with the Halloween event, so we're not getting that. They're easy missions to do they're kill [x] of this enemy missions.

I think Pulp and Golden Age are my favorite hero eras. It's not a straight multiplication, it's an inverse logarithmic function (I think that's what they're called from my half-remembered math classes)

>>
File: uGTiF8n.jpg (2.25 MB, 3704x3704)

>>2733661
Have to imagine most Anon who've stuck around for the first week would likely rather continue to raise their Villain main and see higher-level content, but I'd be interested in making a Hero alt to round-out our time here. Partially as an excuse to try other archetypes, and partially because seeing zone after zone of the same ruined industrial city tileset for the Villains is starting to get pretty repetitive (maybe that changes past level 35).
In referencing the alignment poll we had just before starting this game, "Villains week 1, Heroes week 2" WAS almost equal in voter count compared to just pure Villains all the way through. But changing course like that could lead to some unexpectedly-empty SuperGroup rosters if our numbers become split between factions, so we'd need to be clear about committing to the change if it's decided upon.
At the very least, with how wild the customization in this title is, it'd be interesting to see what MMOD's batch of valiant superheroes (or possibly anti-heroes) might look like, now that we've witnessed its aesthetic chops in designing the perfect supervillains for our tastes.

The thing with level scaling and quest scaling is that its easy to see high level content anyways, I've seen some villain ones already since we have some high levels already. Plus since a few people are starting to get into the 40 - 50 range now, they might wanna make a hero alt.
>>
>>2734095
I'm up to whatever people decide, Could be fun to try hero side.
Maybe we could ask for some natives to power level us? if the issue is starting again.
>>
>>2733304
I find its a game that excels when playing with others, particularly large groups, and the chaos it creates. The game really tries to promote party play and grouping with some archetypes requiring other party members and such. It tries to enforce the multiplayer aspect, but then so did a lot of those MMOs back in the day.

I think you gotta look at other MMOs at the time to see why people at the time liked it, and why this game is now nostalgic for them. Customisation wise every other MMO's character creation was:
>Choose your race (If the game even had races)
>Choose from 10 preset heads
>Choose from 5 skin colors
>Choose from 10 present hairs
>Choose from 5 hair colors
>Done.

Pic very much related, it's all off FFXI's options for male human. So then City of Heroes comes along and that level of customisation blows people away. But its not only that but it introduces a lot of other things that MMOs don't have at the time. Things like the travel powers that allow complete map traversal, mission creation. And a lot of the things that no other game had at the time like base building and choices during missions, and dynamic maps that look different to you compared to others due to specific quests you did or choices you made, NPCs commenting on your deeds, badges and achievements. These things are super common now but not at the time, and thats what made City of Heroes stand out at the time.

So of course, people have nostalgia for it due to the more unique experience it gave them back in the day compared to other MMOs. Its just less unique now. This is the reason for its success at the time, but also it got less unique as time went on and it got more and more dated especially in its controls and combat and UI, which is why it died. I know NCSoft canned it suddenly in 2012 but desu I don't think it had long left, 2015 at the max, as the game was simply too old.

The slowness and clunkiness don't bother me at all because its no more slow or clunky than any other pre-WoW MMO that I've played. SWG just a few weeks ago for example, I think had far more clunky and janky UI and combat. Thats just a case of it being an old MMO rather than an active choice.

>>2734128

The hero areas are so much more varied than the villain areas. I get what they were going for with the villain areas, that they're meant to be drab, dystopian shitholes. But every single area didn't need to be drab dystopian shithole. St. Martial has some variance with it being a Las Vegas strip but thats it really. Meanwhile Heroes get:
>Hero hall of fame/historical site in Atlas Park
>Low income, working class area with Kings Row
>Highly affluent area in Founders Falls
>Destroyed area in The Hollows
>Under construction area in Faultline with half the area under construction and half not and all the cranes and stuff is a cool thing to work with platforming wise
>Busy downtown area with Steel Canyon
>Motorway network with Skyway City
>Giant power generator area with Terra Volta
>Spooky supernatural town with Croatoa
>Beach resort area with Talos Island
>Port/Docks area with Independence Port
And thats just the stuff I've explored, haven't even explored them all yet.

Of all the places to pull out reddit's favourite "might not be for you" cliché, why would you pick the MMODventure thread? Do you know how conceited it makes you sound when you act like fucking CoH is the peak of the genre? I've played twenty-five MMOs in the last year. How many have you played? Two?
>>
>>2734536
Honestly compared to SWG, CoH feels like a AAA experience that came out in 2024. The fact that WoW Vanilla gameplay and interface still feels good today explains why that MMO was so popular.
>>
>>2734711
Im not acting like CoH is the peak of the genre. I don't think it is. But if you wanna talk about conceited, its to claim there's nothing going for it. But when your complaint is "It plays like an MMO" then IDK how to solve that other than maybe don't play MMOs. If you've played 25 MMOs in the last year then I'm sure you can survive CoH because it's not the most slow paced or janky combat we've played this year.

I think the worst pre-WoW combat is Everquest which is why in the main thread I said to never do it even though it doesn't count as part of the project due to its popularity. Everyone here would hate it holy shit the combat is so slow paced, every battle comes with a bunch of UI jank prep, especially if you're a spell caster. And having a bunch of tabs open to check everything and doing stuff is always the long way round. Doing a dungeon in that game is just 1 - 2 hours prepping and then sitting back and watching the slow combat, then moving once in a while.

I think what CoH has compared to other pre-WoW MMOs combat wise is it is at least flashy. Its fun to see a full party with a bunch of shit popping off. But out of the three superhero MMOs, CoH has the worst combat for sure. The issue with the other Superhero MMOs is they also do other things worse. So theres no perfect Superhero MMO out there IMO. Theres a multiverse world out there where CoH wasn't shut down and they ended up releasing a sequel with all of the soul in tact but none of the jank and unoptimization and pre-Wow messiness.

I agree that WoW seriously changed the landscape for a reason. It was just a far less cumbersome interface and combat system. The pre-WoW MMOs were time sinks because everything was long and arduous, while WoW was a time sink because you wanted to keep playing. As much as people shit on WoW clones and the WoW system being generic these days, its become the generic system for a reason because it is just the better way to create the foundation of your MMO these days.

I agree, I just think it was a shame that games like SW:ToR just copied without adding anything back, FFXIV 2.0 added something at least.
Could you make a small comparison between the 3 super hero MMOs since you seem to know them well? I've only played CoH.

City of Heroes positives:
>Best customisation across the board (Base, powers, costumes, missions)
>Can switch alignments and be neutral alignments

City of Heroes negatives:
>Worst combat of the three
>Hasn't aged well and is really janky and unoptimized at this point. Which then makes the combat worse.

Champions Online positives:
>You can design your own arch nemesis which is cool, and they appear in missions as a boss
>Best implementation of travel powers and traversal. Has a whole bunch of travel powers the other games don't have (Ice slide, tunnelling, wall and ceiling crawling, web slinging)
>Only game with freeform power choosing, meaning you can create some OP builds

Champions Online negatives:
>Hero only
>I find it the least interesting of the three storyline and lore wise. Its the one where I felt least like a hero affecting the world.
>Freeform is subscriber only, free to play players can only choose from pre-set classes which are more confined than CoH

DC Universe Online positives:
>Best combat of the three
>Most interesting locales. Well known DC locales such as Gotham, Metropolis etc. but there's more variety, you got to space and shit, different planets

DC Universe Online negatives:
>Worst character creator of the three
>Paywalled to fuck, free players are restricted by powers, with most of them sub only, and then a bunch of OP ones like Kryptonian and Lantern powers are DLC only. A lot of costume stuff is also paywalled.

Universal positive:
>Unique setting/concept compared to most MMOs

Universal negative:
>Quite samey and repetitive mission types.

I didn't like champions online personally, people praise it for it's freeform classless character building system but I kinda prefer classes myself. I played DCUO on launch and it had like 7 powers total which felt very lackluster to me after playing City of Heroes for years. I think it's still cool though because it's the most polished of the three and allows you to larp in the DC universe.

Yeah I struggled to describe my second negative for Champions but it ultimately boils down to "It didn't grip me." I just find it the least interesting universe of the three. Its very Saturday Morning Cartoon in the most generic way. I found CoH had more interesting characters and villain groups than Champions, and more interesting storylines. They at least had the balls to kill off their main hero. In Champions nothing really happens, even at the highest levels you're just fighting gang members. At least CoH scales to like aliens and time travel and mirror universe.
