This is a thread for matchmaking, discussion, and cultivation of action puzzle and other adjacent competitive arcade games. To get the thread going, post guides, resources, and other related materials pertaining to games of this nature, along with determining the definitive ways to play these games via online multiplayer (PC releases, Fightcade, Netplay, etc.)

one game anons should check out is New Tetris (N64)
the main addition to the game is the inclusion of recognizing 4x4 blocks of 4 tetrominoes. if the block is made by a single type of piece it forms a gold block, and if it's made of more than one type of piece it forms a silver block.
it's the only modification to Tetris that has ever made sense, and adds a lot of depth to the game, especially in vs. where it is essentially that you can form them no matter how good at normal Tetris you are.
other versions of the game may have included the mechanic as an option, although i'm not aware of any.

im willing to try it
>recognizing 4x4 blocks of 4 tetrominoes
>adds a lot of depth to the game
assuming that this is about using exactly 4 tetrominos to form a 4x4 square
4x4 blocks of the same tetromino sounds difficult and would greatly limit how you can stack. i doubt the payoff is worth leaving a 2x4 open until the pieces come; maybe viable in score attack?
common 4x4 blocks include permutations of JSLI/LZJI/TTLI/TTJI/TTZL/TTSJ/ILJO, which work in almost any order. there are situational combinations such as JJOO but i cant imagine that anyone who knows anything about 4 line perfect clears would struggle with building 4x4 squares. anyone who plays tetris knows how to stack flat, which is the only thing you need to do to consistently construct 4x4 squares.
i dont know how fun it is to do this in score attack but you cant build these when downstacking in vs so i dont know if it would be fun there.

the Switch versions of Puyo Tetris/Champions are the popular ones and are still a little dead so you'll have to wait until Sega makes a Puyo with crossplay like how Tetris Effect Connected has it
it's going to be a long time
>>
Tetris:
https://harddrop.com/wiki/Tetris_Wiki
Tetris Effect: Connected, tetrio, and Puyo Tetris 1 are the most popular for multiplayer.
Play whatever you want for singleplayer; NES Tetris and the Grand Master series are pretty fun.

Puyo:
https://puyonexus.com/wiki/Main_Page
https://www.chueq.com/
It's a little harder to pin down specific multiplayer games, but matchmaking on PPT1/2 on Switch is at least not hopelessly empty. Puyo 20th, however, is undeniably a favorite for singleplayer and has an English patch.

Panel de Pon:
Panel Attack (NOT THE ONE ON STEAM) is a free and open source client with online multiplayer and should run on anything that can run a calculator program. Also has some singleplayer modes including vs yourself.

maybe if that new game i've heard about the team possibly working on comes out soon but who knows. frankly i doubt they'd even get rid of online pitting you against a bot if you were waiting too long in puzzle pop if they ported that.

sometimes i wonder if puyo would be better off if it wasnt acquired by sega
>>
>>2729307
from distance, the puyo license seems to be doing quite fine especially compared to all its peers
A new game is coming, it have an esports version, crossovers with tetris, official tournaments
Meanwhile, panel de pon is forgotten by nintendo, competitive tetris is a mess, magical drop failed its sequels, money idol is abandoned, ...

NTA but while puyo is doing a lot better than most other puzzle games, it's still not in the best spot it could be.
>PPT1 releases, solid but bland with obvious padding in singleplayer missions to make every world have 10 levels, gimmick modes in party and fusion are not fun (and the latter is an obvious spin on active from 20th), and ringo/tee eat up 80% of screentime cause they really want to push 7 despite doing nothing with their setting
>chronicle releases, people are mixed on it if they actually played it cause it was a late 2016 3DS release so it bombed hard, adds another "main" A character and a villain R character but one is a completely one dimensional love freak that constantly tells arle she's the chosen hero and the villain appears right at the end because of ecolo shenanigans. also regular puyo modes only use 24 characters like 20th/PPT1 so 5 characters (3 being returnees from compile games that aren't from puyo 1) get snubbed
>PPT1 gets rereleased with DLC content included at the start, releases outside of japan and sells very well
>champions comes out, good for the e-sports crowd but aside from being the only easily accessible way to play fever on a modern console it's a budget title with all the art and some characters being from the mobile game replacing ecolo and all non-ARS fever characters, characters mainly count instead of using spells
>PPT2 releases, same as PPT1 but with a better story structure and breaks the 24 character limit, but plagued by awful lag at the start so it fell on its face for people who like playing online
>puzzle pop releases, a game without ringo as the main focus that isn't chronicle and it brings back plot points that in the games was mostly dropped when ringo appeared, but it reuses chronicle's rigs and is stuck for now on apple arcade
>PPT2 releases, literally the exact same game this time but now with switch 2 mouse support and a niche 2p mode that was already in the wii versions of 15th and 20th
>>
>>2730748
Wouldn't necessarily say that Panepon is forgotten outright. It's more a case of wasted potential, and the IP could be so much more than its current state.

When was the last official panel de pon game?
>>
>>2731778
2007 with Planet Puzzle League. It's had multiple rereleases over the years, with the most recent one being GBA Puzzle League getting added to NSO, along with that one Animal Crossing minigame, but that's about it.

It is cool that they uploaded the original SNES version of Panel de Pon to NSO, and not the Tetris Attack version.
Probably due to licensing and old wounds but whatever, I'll take it as a win for Lippy and friends.
>>
>>2733223
True, but it'd be nice for both versions to be available for those who grew up with/prefer the Yoshi version.
>>
>>2733226
I mean, the only thing you're missing out on is the title screen theme and the characters swapped out for Mario characters...
I grew up with Tetris Attack of course, but I'm fine with Lippy having her own series back in her hands. I hope Nintendo does the right thing and keeps it that way.

I know that pic is Patrako's Puchi Carat form, but Cleopatra's Fortune has such cool gimmicks. I need to keep trying for the 1CC at normal speed settings, misplays are brutal in that game though

There's a solid chance that the official Panepon website is one of the oldest websites to still be up.
