The higher your wit, the better chances of getting a good roll. But if you have bad RNG, it can completely kill your chances in the race.Asides from that sprints are over very quickly, and if you just have one late start it can be much more brutal than normal. One whiffed skill can make the difference, one gamba going off at the right time can make the difference. There's just less time for things to even out. You just learn as you go along, ask questions on things you're confused about, and you have to basically "reset" whatever you know and approach each new track trying to understand what works and what doesn't. After a while you start to develop a feel for it, but you need to learn the base mechanics and then learn how to read conditions. As for carryover it's literally just getting a speed skill off before late-race, so when you DO start accelerating you already got a head start essentially as you enter the late-race with a raised target speed due to the speed skill you just got off.
