Why does every mobile game icon follow the exact same style? You'd think the publishers would try to differentiate their games but it's always a portrait of a screaming dude or an anime girl.

That's because the opposite is true (or at least supposed to be). On a highly competitive market a large number vendors are going to be selling borderline identical products, and customers seek out those that look similar to what they purchased before.
Therefore, standing out might as well make your mobileshit easier to overlook unless you have a good strategy on how to leverage your uniqueness. But as I said, competition is all about imitation, so some other party might copy your ideas and overshadow you, and all that hard work you spent into making something different was for nothing.
