After recently watching Movie 5 again, I think it's still a really good movie. But I've come to realize that it being apart of the main anime weighs it down. I probably won't explain this too well, but the way they write Latias and Ash is definitely an impression one would get from a love story.Latias saves Ash during the race to later show up to help Pikachu out just for Ash to save her from Annie and Oakley not too much later. Ash then becomes almost obsessive with seeing her again when you realize he just ditches his friends and the museum to chase after the "girl he had saved" earlier. He chases her, gets told by her that she has no idea who he even is, then proceeds to keep following her until he ultimately loses her. Just to "find her again" and continue chasing after her. It's just pretty interesting how insistent Ash was with seeing her again when he'd usually just let it go for most other people. But this maintains for the whole movie with Ash going to Latias in this instance where we end up in the secret garden and later on when Latias goes to Ash when she and Latios get attacked. It culminates in the kiss she gives him at the end.All of this is fine, in fact, I'd say that the whole dynamic is really well executed and helps elevate the movie for having it. But this is where I come back to what I mean by it being hurt by being attached to the main anime. The fact that this is a movie made it so all build up like what I mentioned ends up wasted. It doesn't ultimately matter if we have a love story blossoming when we never see Latias again. The whole ending isn't allowed to maintain the impact that it has when you realize it'll never be referenced again. Whereas if this was a standalone special that wasn't featuring Ash, it'd be able to have it as a satisfying end or leave room for something to expand on it later. I'm not even saying Ash himself hurt the movie as he was actually fine in this movie.
