If there were a Pokémon with an Ability that sets Stealth Rock as soon as it enters battle (like Drizzle, for example, which sets Rain Dance as soon as it enters battle), how long do you think it would take for it to be banned by Smogon? And how horribly high would its team usage rate be?

Would probably be really good, but a bit too late considering everyone and their mothers like to use the Heavy Duty Boots (and that particular item made Smogon seethe a lot).

Would be banned very quickly probably.

I think it really depends on the mon itself and the rest of the meta. If the user is some shitmon with no other good qualities it would probably be a mainstay on hyper offense teams but would go unused by more defensive leaning teams that would prefer throwing rocks on something like Gliscor and having the extra utility that it provides.

Even Smeragle was a shitmon, but was very used!

People still run suicide leads for the sole purpose of setting stealth rock despite heavy duty boots being introduced
So immediately. Stealth rock is just too strong to be a fully passive zero investment effect.

Smogonfags love their rocks; I doubt they would ever ban it no matter what the mon's usage ended up being.

Hazards should just have a limited time on the field like weather since gen 6. That would do a lot to balance it out.

It amazes me that this isn't the case. Weather, terrains, screens, volatile status conditions, all wear off after a given amount of turns. So why don't entry hazards too?
>>

Assuming it had pretty normal stats/type/moves, it wouldn’t be banned.
In most cases, it’d actually be considered bad actually.
The issue is the same issue with Stone Axe and Kleavor. You can’t stack Stealth Rocks, so if you switch in while Stealth Rocks are up, the ability does nothing. Plus Stealth Rock is good, but not THAT good. Not remotely as good as weather, which provided far more value when you build your team around them, than just Stealth Rock.
>>
The solution to the Stealth Rock problem

>Limit its distribution
>Make Steel and Grass variants that cannot be stacked

Skarmory?
>>

>Making rock worse

>sets Stealth Rock as soon as it enters battle (like Drizzle, for example, which sets Rain Dance as soon as it enters battle)

you guys ever think about how intimidate is just growl on entry and it's broken
>>

Because hazards don’t really do anything outside of Smogon even lasting forever, if they wore off they’d basically never be worth using
>>

Entry Hazards aren’t as strong as Weather. Not by a longshot.
Rain for example, you get
>x1.5 boost to Water moves
>Halve the damage of Fire attacks
>Activate weather abilities that range from healing to double your speed and ensuring you’re outspeeding the vast majority of the game
>Turn Thunder and Hurricane into moves that can’t miss
>Same for the Genie signature moves
>Gives every Pokemon with Weather Ball 100 BP Water type coverage that is really 150 BP because of the boost from Rain
That’s a lot more impactful than any hazard wishes it could be.

Depends if its a shitmon in most other departments, having a rock typing in a world without tera would be a good start, I think a mon that could set a spike layer on each switch would be really interesting too

It wouldn’t be banned.
Glimmora exists with a similar idea. Setting up hazards with its ability. No one thinks Glimmora should be ban worthy even though its can set up toxic spikes by simply being hit by physical moves (which is better because spikes/t-spikes are stackable unlike stealth rock).
Depending on how good the actual Pokemon is, it might not even be good.
