Finished Platinum yesterday and it really did make me miss these.
Now that HMs aren't a thing I feel like dungeons would be peak fun now.
I really enjoyed just taking my time to revisit ones I'd passed over earlier in the game to find more secrets, Mon and TMs. And now that we also don't have random encounters it'd be so much more fun to do shit like track down a Feebas in the lower areas of an early game dungeon that were previously inaccessible.
Even though there's not TOO much to them, I liked the caves in SV, they definitely tried to create mini-dungeons with some verticality to them, I just hope they take it further in Gen 10.

I think the issue with modern dungeons and this also goes for quite a few dungeons from the old games too is that there's no puzzle to them. It's probably why Strength puzzles kept turning up (Kanto Victory Road, Ice Path, Seafloor Cavern, Mt. Coronet, etc.). But at the same time they were capable of doing other sorts of puzzles, like the sliding ice puzzles, teleporter puzzles, standard mazes, etc. It's an unfortunate loss that the Gyms have downgraded ever since Gen VII, since they also offered at least some attempt at a puzzle (although a lot were very simple). Plus you get one-offs like all the Regis having riddles or picture match puzzles in Ruins of Alph.

I think at this stage it's a lost cause to try to bring back HMs, but they really should be substituting them with unique non-battle elements to at least the major dungeons to give them more unique qualities. Although that would also require actually bringing back dungeons in the first place.

Oh definitely, I think for all the shit that's in it, Kalos does show that with at the very least its Gyms (namely Santalune, Shalour, Coumarine, Anistar & Snowbelle) but also the odd overworld puzzle like Route 21, the PokeBall Factory, Frost Cavern, etc. I'd also add that places like Coumarine Gym, Anistar Gym and Glittering Cave I wish we'd see more of cause that ability to use the camera and 3D environments in unique ways is something sorely lacking in the later games.

Adding onto my previous point, it got me thinking about Paldea's lack of proper dungeons. I ended up spending a little bit of time thinking up potential puzzles/dungeons for 28 locations;
- the 8 Gyms (Cortondo, Artazon, Levincia, Cascarrafa, Medali, Montenevera, Affornada, Glaseado)
- the 5 Star Bases (Segin, Schedar, Navi, Ruchbah, Caph)
- the 5 Titan Locations (Stony Cliffs, Open Skies, Lurking Steel, Quaking Earth, False Dragon)
- 10 other locations that seemed fitting (Inlet Grotto, Colonnade Hollow, Levincia's Skyscrapers, Asado Desert, Tagtree Thicket, Dalizapa Passage, Alfornada Cavern, Socarrat Trail, Leaking Tower of Paldea & Paldea's Highest Peak)

None of them would be particularly complex but it'd at least offer some variety and make some of the locations more memorable I think.
