We could've had this alluring, charismatic villain, especially when looking at how they portrayed him in Twilight Skies. Why give him such a nothingburger motive? And to have him turn himself in too, how does that fit into his character design?
Being a villain doesn't mean the character has to be this over-the-top evil guy, so why give him a motive that makes him out to be a stupidly naive yet seemingly "virtuous" dude? They could've made him evil while still not making him heartless yet also not naively virtuous.
