>U-Turn >original name refers to how dragonflies can fly backwards>should have been Bug Out to keep the pun
Should have been called Bugs In Anus for authenticity
>>58215786Sucker Punch should've just been called Sneak Attack or Ambush so people wouldn't think it was a punching move.
>>58215786Fly Away
>>58215786>original name refers to how dragonflies can fly backwards>should have been Bug Out to keep the punthis only makes it dumber that pokemon like Cinderace and almost every dark type and bird can learn it
To paint a dragon and dot its eyes
> not named Absird to keep both the knight theme and the wordplay of the original name
>>58217031I mean bug out just means to retreat quickly so lots of Pokemon learning it still makes some sense>>58217049I'll always think that this was such a missed opportunity
>>58215786Pokemon fans can't read and GF just gives every pokemon every move for no reason now so there is no reason to.
>>58215786>may be>mayJesus. Do they write "Thunderbolt may be Electric-type because real world thunderbolts are electrically charged" too?
>>58217096It’s kind of a meme at this point that Bulbapedia never definitively says anything unless it is a direct quote. Like Nidoking is very clearly based on Baragon but its page only says that it’s based on Kaiju and never specifies which one
>>58215786I'd like feraligatr's name to spelt properly. I'd be fine with it if was a purely stylistic choice of the time, but it happened because the character limit of the gamboy.
>>58217040Dragon Ascent sounds good, they can call it Dragon Awakening too.
>>58217049why does Farfetch'd has this apostrophe?
Blacky should have been called Niggeon
>>58217096because "IS" implies you have proof, source>>58217106not the same thing, they're afraid of copyrights vialation claims
>>58217124Moves where the name is a pun of some sort usually don't translate very well. There's not a whole lot you can do when the entire association relies on something that doesn't exist in your language.
>>58215786Splash still being called Splash is honestly fucking criminal.
>>58217128*have anDumb ESL.
>>58217122Okay but should it be corrected to Feraligater to keep it sounding similar or...?
>>58217198Pokemon is one of those franchises where they're incredibly opposed to changing established translations even when they're completely wrong because people are familiar with the mistranslation. They've made SOME corrections in very recent years ("Pokemon Condominium", "Bell Tower", "Feint Attack", "wing") but there's still lots of retarded shit out there.Blastoise is still the "shellfish Pokemon" for fuck's sake, how did that ever happen?
>>58217212I think Feraligator is fine because it makes the name more obvious and the pronunciation isn’t that different
>>58217212Alligator is spelled... well as alligator, so I would assume it'd be feraligator.
>>58217224Retard.
>>58217215Faint Attack was the most annoying one, the nip name directly translates to Feint Attack, so it was incredibly clearly an example of a name that did get translated properly and then "fixed" afterwards by some dumbass editor that didn't know the word feint. But that didn't stop an embarrassing amount of autists from insisting "faint attack" totally made sense as a name and totally wasn't an error.
>>58217215Only the English localisation. The German translation changed a bunch of things later on.
i like the name dragonfly return, i wouldve just kept it
>>58217298Dragonfly return is not a term in English.
>>58217234It's in German culture to correct things constantly. For example, rather than being reactive with their dictionaries and grammar books, they hold meetings discussing to discuss what things in the language should be changed and what should be preserved, and everyone else must conform to that. It sounds oppressive but the point is to avoid the decay/degradation of the language that you see in other countries.
>>58217049Why did I not realize until now how perfect this is?
>>58217206have this*dumb american
>>58217131People like you are the reason it got changed to bracky
>>58217381They changed "Emonga" to "Emolga" too, which is even more retarded.
>>58217049They weren't gonna call their proud new regional variant evolution "absurd" and make it look bad or dumb... even if it already is.
>>58217215>They've made SOME corrections in very recent years but there's still lots of retarded shit out there. If they can correct items and locations, surely sometime in the near future they can correct moves, abilities, and even Pokémon names more drastically.>>58217230The TCG never had this problem.>>58217381I'm surprised it went to Bracky instead of Blucky. Still would've rather had TPC tell those people to pack sand instead of bending the knee over the romanization. Jynx was one thing, but Blacky?
>>58217444If you search for "blacky pokemon" on twitter you get a pretty huge amount of hits for posts going "LMAOOOOOO YOU WONT BELIEVE WHAT UMBREON IS CALLED IN JAPAN DUDE THATS RACIST AF SKULL EMOJI", I can see why the nips thought it reflected kinda badly on them. They officially changed the nip name of the Mario character Blacky to his English name Spike too.
>>58217460America was a mistake
>>58217444The romanizations are just there for style, Pokemon is somewhat unique in that it actually has official trademarked romanizations for all the Pokemon instead of just picking and choosing whatever seems right at the moment for that particular merch. They're still somewhat inconsistent on human character names though.
>>58217460
>>58215786>pie that caters to people>not named Caterpie
I think it's a cool name, but probably should have been saved for something more fitting. It's supposed to just be a slashing move, but Aerial Ace brings to mind some sort of mid-air acrobatic maneuver rather than a sword technique.
'Struggle Bug' has always been a weird one to me, it just reads like a bad translation. I feel it should have just simply been 'Squirm', I think that's probably the best english equivalent that invokes the idea of an bug trying to get free of something.
>>58217548A lot of older terms were translated before there was anything other than a name and an effect attached to them. It's how we ended up with a move named "Rain Dance" that doesn't involve the Pokemon actually dancing.
>>58217460>>58217470Social media allowing idiots on the internet was a mistake.
>>58217548What for? Swallow Cut?
>>58217304Pretty sure Spanish also changed a bunch, and some other languages. I think it's just the English localisation writing their fanfics. They constantly change shit. See also the whole shrinking Pokémon fiasco.
>>58218742The original spanish translations made a ton of mistakes. Some of the moves names were literally nonsense.
>>58218742>>58218771>counter was translated as "person who counts" instead of "counterattack"
>>58217925Swallow Slice maybe?
>>58215786It’s so iconic in its own right by now that I can’t imagine changing it to anything else. I would have probably kept Caitlin as Cattleya though, feels like it suits her better.
>>58217548There’s got to be some sword/wing pun out there somewhere that would be perfect for this>>58217562I think they did that just in case they introduced an actual Squirm move down the line
>>58217336Id say an is better than this in this case.
>>58218771>>58218799Yeah, I heard "Slam" also used a word specifically for slamming a door shut, lol.If it makes you feel any better, German also had a few like that. "Pound" was translated as "Pfund", which refers to the unit or currency, not a hit.
>>58217548should be called airslash.
>>58217925>>58218801Tsubame Gaeshi
>>58215786It is a bug type move though. Is this a old leftover entry or something.
>>58219383It’s saying that the reason it’s Bug type is because it may be a reference to it including the Japanese word for dragonfly in it
>>58219409>may beAre they literally retarded?
>>58217049good job
>>58217925James Cut
>>58219441I’m just going to refer back to my previous post >>58217106
>>58217578His english name should have been Jack.
>>58219441It may be not
>>58217444>even Pokémon namesNot happening in English. Those are the most recognizable names outside of Japan and any of them marketable enough to bother fixing is too popular to risk the confusion and tanking seo.
>>58215786the original Japanese names for Mr. Mime ex's abilities are Imphal Barrier and Pearl Barrier respectively, both referencing Japan's defeats and victories during World War 2. the names were totally cucked in the English release for obvious reasons.
>>58220380should have called them "Vietnam Barrier" and "Iraq Barrier" for the English release.
>>58217577I feel like Rain Dance would still be called Rain Dance if it were translated today.
>>58220427I feel like they would name it Rainmaker instead, just to avoid confusion with Dancer and avoid religious connotations with the original name of “Rain Prayer”
>>58218799that was in italian too kekas a kid I tried to make sense of it as the Pokemon counting seconds to know when to react or something
>>58218799reminds of the FF7 translation always translating "party" as in a festivity instead of a group of people
>>58220808Would we have gotten Gold Rush's name to stay the same instead of localized as Make It Rain?
>>58220427should’ve just been rainy day to contrast sunny day
>>58215786I've seen "Bug Out" used as an alternate translation for the Swarm ability (むしのしらせ)
>>58217548>>58217925A bunch of stuff leaves Tsubame Gaeshi untranslated now, since it's the name of a specific move (a downwards slash which abruptly reverses direction to catch opponents off-guard).There's probably some localiser who'd try to make it "Wronski Feint".
>>58221558>Wronski that's polish for a crow (as masculine surname)
>>58221616It's a Harry Potter thing. A Quidditch move where you get an enemy to chase you towards an obstacle then dodge at the last second so they crash into it. Has enough popcultural cachet for TVTropes to name a page after it despite hating J.K. Rowling.(on checking said page, they say it was in-universe named after a Polish wizard called Józef Wroński).
>>58221697Avian Feint could be cool
>>58221444imagine a world where all the weather was just>Sunny Day>Rainy Day>Sandy Day>Hailly Day/Snowy Day
>>58217128Farfetched is already a word, maybe adding the apostrophe makes it more like a name? Some names have them
>>58221918>Some names have themLike what?
>>58221918I also thought traded frarfetch'd named ch'ding was meant to be short for farfetch'ding
>>58217096>Talonflame may be a combination of talon and flame
>>58221953>frarfetch'd named ch'ding was meant to be short for farfetch'ding....????? what is "farfetch'ding" supposed to mean???
>>58221988far-fetching
>>58222074that seems like a big stretch considering "far-fetching" isn't something people say.
>>58220413But anon that would reference two defeats
>>58222233Blessed get
>>58215786Why do Silver Wind and Silver powder are bug releted?
>>58222257bugs are made of silver
>>58221918Probably a legal thing so it can be trademarked. Though the localization glossary from the teraleak claimed the apostrophe was to make the name more "unique".>>58221988It Dougs.
>>58222257Go grab a moth with your bare hands and you'll understand
>>58217298Would have exceeded the character limit on older games.
>>58218742>See also the whole shrinking Pokémon fiascoThey just mistranslated that in DPPt since the Japanese for shrink was close to curl up. It wasn't mentioned in the games again until LA where they got it right.
>>58222523Reminds me of DP and XY each having an NPC mentioning that Pokemon eggs aren’t actually eggs, but the original context of the supplemental GS Elm email explaining what “eggs” actually are was never localized.
>>58217031Exactly. We should heavily restrict all switching moves' distribution
>>58222809Explain.
>>58222233Good point.Little Barrier and Fat Barrier, perhaps?
>>58215786U-Turn is fine considering how many non-Bugs learn it.>>58217230A reason for the confusion may have been because in Pokemon Stadium 2 the "Faint Attack" animation had them becoming transparent, meaning they literally became "faint".>>58217577The meaning of Rain Dance is obvious, it refers to the act of Rainmaking. Sunny Day is a retarded sounding name in comparison.
>>58224156>The meaning of Rain Dance is obvious, it refers to the act of RainmakingNo shit, but it still looks stupid when Pokemon in the anime or 3D games use "Rain Dance" and don't actually dance
>>58220808Do you retards not know what a rain dance is ?
>>58224218>trannies have mental breakdown when HP is mentioned
>>58215786Rage Candy Bar -> Cake of Rage
>>58224283Retarded or intentionally obtuse? The implication is that only trannies are so invested in slop like Harry Potter and TVTropes that they must inject it into any discussion. Only a tranny (or what is essentially a tranny in spirit that maybe doesn't want to actually chop their cock off) would even know that much about gay children's books for British bumboys (I say while posting in a Pokémon thread, yes I see the irony)
>>58224314I can see how toxic person you are. You love media for children, but hate on people who do too. You're too insecure to admit to yourself your preferences and who you are.Sounds like classic tranny behaviour.
>>58224337>I can see how toxic person you are.
>>58224366i'm not bald
>>58224220The whole point is that the move is not originally a rain dance, it’s a rain prayer. Renaming it will help stop confusion over it not affecting abilities like Dancer that copy dance moves. >>58224288This one annoys me the most because they had the perfect pun but NoA didn’t trust American kids to understand foreign cuisine so we ended up with a really clunky name
>>58224337>t.ranny
>>58224482A rain dance is a prayer you autistic nigger
>>58224496but not a dance
>>58224482>cake is foreign cuisine
>>58224314>thinks harry potter is obscureTell me you're underaged without telling me your underaged.
>>58224535>It's another dumb ESL or American mutt has absolutely no reading comprehension postTiring
>>58224496Yes, and "Rain Prayer" is not a "phrase" and has no "ring" to it, Rainman
>>58224314JK Rowling is the tranny arch nemesis though.
>>58224366CWNBAS4BBCDelete this coal
>>58224515It’s a Japanese rice cake, which NoA thought American kids wouldn’t know about
>>58224559Manju aren't cakes, they're dumplings.
>>58224564My bad, Bulbapedia lists it as a pounded rice cake. Still, Cake of Rage would have been better than Rage Candy Bar
>>58224544>TiringProud of you, admitting that you're weak is the first step in improving yourself.
>>58222863Water types shouldn't get their own pivot move, or it should be limited to dolphin pokemon, they're already OP with their ridiculous bulk and only 2 weaknesses. Also hero form Palafin shouldn't exist>let's take that old Ballio thing and turn it into a broken OP piece of shit that makes box legendaries and Huge Power Slaking look fair in comparison
faint attack still made sense since it was a hard to see attack
