>>
>>58217198
Pokemon is one of those franchises where they're incredibly opposed to changing established translations even when they're completely wrong because people are familiar with the mistranslation. They've made SOME corrections in very recent years ("Pokemon Condominium", "Bell Tower", "Feint Attack", "wing") but there's still lots of retarded shit out there.

Blastoise is still the "shellfish Pokemon" for fuck's sake, how did that ever happen?
>>
>>58217212

>>
>>58217215
Faint Attack was the most annoying one, the nip name directly translates to Feint Attack, so it was incredibly clearly an example of a name that did get translated properly and then "fixed" afterwards by some dumbass editor that didn't know the word feint. But that didn't stop an embarrassing amount of autists from insisting "faint attack" totally made sense as a name and totally wasn't an error.
>>
>>58217215
Only the English localisation. The German translation changed a bunch of things later on.
>>
i like the name dragonfly return, i wouldve just kept it
>>
>>58217298
Dragonfly return is not a term in English.
>>
>>58217234
It's in German culture to correct things constantly. For example, rather than being reactive with their dictionaries and grammar books, they hold meetings discussing to discuss what things in the language should be changed and what should be preserved, and everyone else must conform to that. It sounds oppressive but the point is to avoid the decay/degradation of the language that you see in other countries.

>>
>>58217215
>They've made SOME corrections in very recent years but there's still lots of retarded shit out there.
If they can correct items and locations, surely sometime in the near future they can correct moves, abilities, and even Pokémon names more drastically.
>>58217230
The TCG never had this problem.
>>58217381
I'm surprised it went to Bracky instead of Blucky. Still would've rather had TPC tell those people to pack sand instead of bending the knee over the romanization. Jynx was one thing, but Blacky?
>>
>>58217444
If you search for "blacky pokemon" on twitter you get a pretty huge amount of hits for posts going "LMAOOOOOO YOU WONT BELIEVE WHAT UMBREON IS CALLED IN JAPAN DUDE THATS RACIST AF SKULL EMOJI", I can see why the nips thought it reflected kinda badly on them.

They officially changed the nip name of the Mario character Blacky to his English name Spike too.

The romanizations are just there for style, Pokemon is somewhat unique in that it actually has official trademarked romanizations for all the Pokemon instead of just picking and choosing whatever seems right at the moment for that particular merch.

They're still somewhat inconsistent on human character names though.

I think it's a cool name, but probably should have been saved for something more fitting. It's supposed to just be a slashing move, but Aerial Ace brings to mind some sort of mid-air acrobatic maneuver rather than a sword technique.
>>
'Struggle Bug' has always been a weird one to me, it just reads like a bad translation. I feel it should have just simply been 'Squirm', I think that's probably the best english equivalent that invokes the idea of an bug trying to get free of something.
>>
>>58217548
A lot of older terms were translated before there was anything other than a name and an effect attached to them. It's how we ended up with a move named "Rain Dance" that doesn't involve the Pokemon actually dancing.

It's a Harry Potter thing. A Quidditch move where you get an enemy to chase you towards an obstacle then dodge at the last second so they crash into it. Has enough popcultural cachet for TVTropes to name a page after it despite hating J.K. Rowling.

(on checking said page, they say it was in-universe named after a Polish wizard called Józef Wroński).
