>There are more fire types in Gen 1 than there are grass typesWhat the fuck?
>>58223912I always thought picking Charmander made the most sense because there aren't many other fire pokemon to choose from, >14 grass pokemon including all evolutions>13 fire pokemon including all evolutionsI guess maybe this is why it felt like there were more grass pokemon in Gen 1?
>>58223912Waterchads WON.
>>58223912Reminder that Sinnoh has only a Fire starter, Magmortar after the champion and a legendary after complete the DP pokedex. And a vanilla Rapidash. What they thinking; Okay I understand "le snowy region" but THATS is the point, Fire types are ideal for icy regions. See in Polar Plaza in SV DLC, 4 of 8 starters is there. The ideal Fire type for Sinnoh is a Fire Red Panda because why not.
>>58223933They really could have easily came up with a handful of wintery/snowy themed fire pokemon.I bet I could come up with a half-ass decent concept in like 10 minutes
Masuda's Water boner makes it almost impossible to want to choose Water types in any game because you're more likely able to find a Water type objectively better than your Starter by just putting in an ounce of effort. The exception is Hoenn, where because all of the Fire types are shit you either use Blaziken or go without one and the game was designed to be facerolled by Swampert, a completely unbalanced mon that exists to make fun of the game design by encouraging players to literally never catch anything else, especially since Cut is completely optional in HoennAnyway the funny part about Kanto's Grass types is Vileplume and Victreebel were literally the last mons added into the game and are version exclusives. You either have one them, Venusaur or Exeggutor as your options since the other two are dogshit and can't carry their weight. At least all of your Fire options bar Rapidash have something going for them
>>58223912Eh that's pretty close. If you take out Charizard/Venusaur (since they're starters not everyone's gonna have) and Moltres (since in a normal playthrough you won't even have it until right before the end of the game) the number of both is about the same. Even accounting for version exclusives really since you can only get either Growlithe or Vulpix naturally in the wild, and Magmar's only in Blue I think. Like you can't normally encounter all possible Fire types in a single game, it's gonna be anywhere from 3-6 Fire mons depending on the game/starter/if you actually bother using Moltres or not, while for Grass it's about 4-5 (since Oddish/Bellsprout depends on the version + you might not pick Venusaur). It's Water that feels hugely out of proportion compared to the other two types.
>>58224066Also now that I'm thinking about it a little more: just realized it also depends if you choose to evolve Eevee into Flareon or not too. If you have Red version + don't pick Charmander + don't use the Fire Stone on Eevee that's only like 2 Fire mons available to you until Victory Road, while at least with Grass you can potentially catch up to 4 in the wild even without picking Bulbasaur.
>>58224105>>58224066At the very least, it should be updated to reflect version exclusives
>>58223917It feels like that because of how quickly you can get one. For grass types there's paras in mt. moon or oddish/bellsprout just north of cerulean, for fire types it's vulpix/growlithe if you bother to cut the trees between saffron and lavender, and if you don't you need to wait until you get to the mansion for ponyta or magmar.
>>58224158 (me)Now that I think about it, the trainers also contribute to this. You can see lasses with oddishes and bellsprouts as early as mt. moon. If you pick squirtle, the first fire type you will even see is a growlithe at ss. anne.
>>58223912>Version exclusives>Lategame shitmons >lolflareon
>>58224239Did I miss any version exclusives?
I miss the idea of there being rare types. Dragon is thw worst offender of this
>>58224290I miss the world having little hidden areas and shit to explore. I never actually liked the main story/quest in pokemon games as a kid and would just rush through it as fast as possible so I could just explore, catch and train without fucking NPCs stopping me.I don't really get why Gamefreak thinks the stories are such a big important part of the game while the catching and battling pokemon parts are sorta glossed over and half-assed
>>58223933>SinnohJust DP. Stop saying this is a Sinnoh problem. Nobody should ever play any Sinnoh game that isn't Platinum.
>>58223912God the gen 1 water roster is so good and varied
>>58224306> I don't really get why Gamefreak thinks the stories are such a big important part of the gameIt’s not what they think. It’s what people are liking and asking more of. It’s been part of the appeal for most games since SM
>>58224390>It’s been part of the appeal for most games since SMYes and the games have been getting worse and worse since X and Y, whats your point?
>>58224306It's such a shame, Game Freak was pretty good at world design. Now they just don't give a fuck. You get shit underbaked plots as the focus instead.
>>58224306This, map design was hard carrying the 2D games (and XY) and people are just now catching up to it because of SV's empty open world. Going deep into a dungeon and finding a hidden room with a rare mon spawn was god like.
>>58223912If you count all stages there is more grass than fire
>>58223912I don’t know what’s worse — how few there are of each, or how awful the type diversity is with what is available. >FireFire/Flying x 2Fire x 5>GrassGrass/Poison x 3Grass/PsychicGrassLike wtf
>>58224396the point is they aren't catering to your annoying ass, you are not the target audience
>>58223912Funny how every single other pokemon is better than the fucking starters lmao
>>58225813kinda embarrassing that you unironically play pokemon for the story tbqh senpai
>>58223933>What they thinking; In narrative coherence, Sinnoh is a cold region. As someone who loves worldbuilding, I applaud the attention to detail. But as a player, I don't care about that shit, so give me tiksian flaming snowmen!
>>58223912The grass types are front loaded. The earliest non-Charmander fire Pokemon you can get is outside Celadon City. Meanwhile you get one grass type in Mt. Moon and another after Cerulean (technically two, but only one per version and if you allow trades then you can get anything).
>>58224255>a third of the available fire types in Gen 1 are locked to Blue >not RedBut why though?
Unrelated but in a vacuum these models look pretty good
>>58225978to incentivize picking charizard
>>58224035>The exception is HoennKanto and Alola should be included. For the former, water types are backended as hell and you don’t get any until after getting the Pokeflute if you won’t want to baby a Magikarp. For the latter, Primarina hits like a nuke and levels up faster than any other water type in the game, along with getting fairy typing and Moonblast very quickly in a campaign that throws dark types at you consistently.
>>58225874>In narrative coherence, Sinnoh is a cold region. The truth is that they weren’t thinking about this at all, because Sinnoh has only 2 ice lines in DP and only 5 in Platinum. It’s tied with fire in both games.
>>58223917Charizard honestly just sucks ass in Gen 1. Fire isn’t a good typing there, and it’s supposed to be the “crit” starter, but Venusaur gets razor leaf so it doesn’t even succeed at that anyway.
in gen 133 poison types30 water types24 normal types19 flying types14 grass types14 ground types13 psychic types12 bug types12 fire types11 rock types9 electric types7 fighting types5 ice types3 ghost types3 dragon types4 least common types are the elite 4 specialities
>>58224035>Masuda's Water boner makes it almost impossible to want to choose Water types in any game because you're more likely able to find a Water type objectively better than your Starter by just putting in an ounce of effort. In BW1 I'd say Samurott is at least tied for the best along with Carracosta. The other good water types (Alomamola, Jellicent, Toad) are more defensive and, while good, slow play just isn't fun in the single player with how many battles you have to get through.
>>58224035The only gens where you Water starter is outclassed before the end game are 2 and 5. Blastoise is genuinely one of the best Water types in Gen 1, only being outclassed by Slowbro, Cloyster, and Lapras, all of which are end game. Swampert is hands down the best Water type short of Kyogre in Gen 3. Empoleon is still the only Water/Steel type in the entire game and isn't outclassed until Palkia comes in, though Gyarados is a strong sidegrade. Greninja is obviously incredible the whole game, Primarina is just a slightly weaker Tapu Fini, and Quaquaval is weaker than Palafin, but doesn't require friends to obtain.
>>58226201How was Charmander supposed to be the crit starter? Its only move that affects crit rate is Slash at level 30
>>58226534>Blastoise is genuinely one of the best Water types in Gen 1, only being outclassed by Slowbro, Cloyster, and Lapras, all of which are end gameYou forgot Starmie. Also, Cloyster, Lapras, and Starmie are all closer to midgame than endgame.
>>58226210Gen 1 still has over 1/3rd of all Poison types in existence. There is only 1 non-Kantonian Grass/Poison line, and that's Roselia/Roserade.
>>58226546>Venusaur - 80 speed>Charizard - 100 speed>Blastoise - 78 speedDon't forget that in Gen 1 your critical hit rate is determined by how fast you are
>>58224035>The exception is Hoennno it isn'tLudicolo is right there
>>58224720>>58224374It hardly seems merely the result of their sheer numbers, but the type diversity is really something else.>6 pure water>3 water/ice>2 water/psychic>2 water/rock>1 water/fighting>1 water/poison>1 water/flying
