Gen 6 is where the design philosophy of the series shifted and it's evidently visible when reading Masuda's blog where he goes from constant, passionate posts to only ever posting corporate bullshit for Gen 6+. Gen 5 was even by his own words an attempt to return to form and recapture the magic of the originals, and ultimately the changes it brought to the series are more mechanical edits to the formula and less about the series' identity/direction.
