I honestly have no clue how they'll salvage it.
>dark/psychic is a really bad typing, giving you only an immunity to psychic and 2 weaknesses, one to fairy, and a 4x weakness to bug. So you're frail as paper.
>Malamar's BST is low for a fully evolved mon at 482. Even if it got strictly +50 atk/spe then it would only be 142/123, which is ok, but REALLY easy to outspeed in the current metagame, and taking away from its attack would make it not worth using generally

Idk I'm thinking they'll minmax it like beedrill and make it a special attacker with contrary and give it psycho boost. I think that's what they'll go for, and I'm not sure if it'll be good.

Honestly this design does kind of move away from the whole "reverse" gimmick, so i don't think they'll go with contrary (though there could be a gimmick set for contrary before megaing for boosts). Instead, if it isn't some weird new ability, I think they'll go for something like magic guard to go with it becoming a fast special attacker. Would this mean it's basically alakazam with dark typing? Yes, but hey they did it for Beedrill and Lucario so who know.

Well Mega Zygarde is almost certainly going to break this pattern, given it's various forms. Who knows if they aren't breaking the pattern elsewhere too?

The design screams special attacker, which has me worried if it's keeping Contrary (its most iconic ability) and not getting something like Psycho Boost or a new move that lowers its own SpA.
Because then it has no way of boosting its own SpA. Even if they do give it a really high base SpA, it can't hold an item because Mega and can't use NP because Contrary.
And while that doesn't sound too bad, to put into perspective how grim that is...

Powercreep is so bad that base stats don't get you that far anymore.
And I sincerely doubt Mega Malamar is getting a base SpA as high as Mega Mewtwo Y.

The unique animation of it poking its own head to stimulate its brain makes me think they'll give it acupressure, which is funny because its useless with Contrary assuming it still keeps it.
I think it makes sense to give it Lumina Crash, since it also uses light, would be a strong stab/debuff option that helps with its weaker stats compared to other megas.

i feel like an ability that just passively applies topsy-turvy while it's on the field could work. so while it's on the field your +2 attack actually acts as -2 attack, but when it switches out the stat changes work as normal again. possibly would make a good answer to setup sweepers since it can topsy turvy you AND fire what is effectively a contrary superpower (or psycho boost if it gets that) in the same turn
