I don't even know what a Pokémon is (yet because I didn't get introduced to this series until the early 2000's.) Also, I don't even remember what I was doing back then-
"Goldenbird" is what everyone called it. Very creative on my playground. You could apparently unlock it by beating Professor Oak in the E4 champion battle, which you apparently unlock by beating the game 100 times using only your starter Pokemon.

I was 15 and had played the games and read some marketing material by the time the anime started airing in my corner of the EU, so I knew it was intended to be a new Pokémon (doubly so as the gaming mags were starting to talk about a new pokémon game in Japan).
