The main antagonist looks like a washed out zombie with a death stare, and the champion is a stoic, Russian-looking woman in all black. Platinum also doubles down on the vibes by having you go into a dark blue dimension and capturing a red and black Satan wyrm at the climax of the game. Other popular game series at the time went from the vibes of a tropical and whimsical coming-of-age fantasy in 2002/3 to a dreary and more dramatic/cinematic “sequel” in 2005/6. Zelda and Kingdom Hearts come to mind.
